REPORT

Alty started with under-16s' goalkeeper Paul Sharkey making his under-18s' debut whilst, at the back, Harry Sheridan started despite having played a Reserves' match on Friday night. The sides had met in November, with Altrincham narrow 2-1 winners of a league match.

After Altrincham had kicked off, the first serious goal threat of the match followed a corner after which Ollie Okunowu got in a goalbound shot, which the Chorley keeper saved well (5 mins).

The hosts opened the scoring in the twelfth minute when Gabbidon surged up the left and his low cross was hammered into the net from very close range by Richardson at the near post.

Richardson made it 2-0 when Gabbidon again got forward. This time Richardson's effort rebounded off the keeper before crossing the line (19 mins). Altrincham remained on top but a poor clearance allowed Chorley's no.4 a shot but it cleared the bar (24 mins).

As in the previous league encounter with Chorley, the Lancashire club made extensive use of the rolling substitute practice and five such changes arrived by the fortieth-minute mark, at which point Altrincham made their first substitution as Louie Barrett replaced Milner.

Soon afterwards, a fine ball up the middle from Grogan set Richardson running at goal and he completed his impressive hat-trick (42 mins).

An early Gabidon shot went just wide (49 mins) but, three minutes later, Hughes got to the byline, on the right, and his low cross was converted, off the upright, by Barrett, from close range (52 mins).

Harry Sheridan then had to cover well to clear a goalbound effort from the visitors' no.9 after Sharkey had come out but been unable to gather the ball. After yet another Chorley substitution, Gabidon got into the box at the other end but miscued his shot.

At the other end, a long kick upfield by the Chorley keeper evaded Sharkey and the visitors' no.17 hit the post (62 mins). A Chorley corner soon followed, after which the visitors' no.16 sent a cross across the Alty box as they refused to give up despite their goal deficit (64 mins).

Alty keeper Sharkey was now hobbling and unable to take goalkicks, a duty which Hall assumed. Altrincham now introduced both Miller and Walker for Okunowu and Hussain before a further change by the visitors. Miller soon made his mark, surging forward to score off the inside of the goalpost to make it 5-0 (72 mins).

Gabidon now again got forward but fired over the bar before another Chorley change of personnel was followed by a booking for Sheridan for a foul (77 mins).

The score became 6-0 when Barrett fed Richardson to net his fourth goal with a rising shot in the 79th minute. Hussain then returned to the game in place of Grogan before a neat move inspired by the visitors' no.6 led to their no.10 netting a consolation goal (82 mins).

A surge forward by Barrett led to his firing over the bar before Hussain was booked for a late challenge on the Chorley no.5 (88 mins).

Inside added time, Chorley lost the ball and Richardson advanced to score his fifth and Alty's seventh goal with a low shot (90+1 mins).

This had been a comprehensive victory and an excellent team performance.
