VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

At Brackley Town an "experienced left-sided defender joins the Saints. Brackley Town are delighted to confirm the signing of Ryan Haynes, who joins the club following the expiry of his contract at EFL League Two club Cheltenham Town.

The Daventry born 29-year-old is a naturally left-sided defender with strong League experience, known for his athleticism, composure, and attacking instincts from the back...

Haynes began his career at Coventry City, where he made over 80 senior appearances, before successful spells with Shrewsbury Town, Newport County, and most recently Cheltenham Town in League One".

Gateshead report that "Work continues with FIFA but we have come a long way over the last two weeks and all requirements should be sorted to lift their registration ban in time for the first team's return to training.

This has not delayed any discussions that need to be made in preparing our squad for the upcoming season. Discussions are ongoing with both contracted and out of contract players, as well as new targets required to strengthen the team...

Preparations are underway for a club induction presentation to be presented to the players as they return to training in the first week of July.

This will be delivered to both existing and new players and will set out the way we want to work going forward, putting the community back at the heart of the club...

We have started to develop the grass training facilities at Gateshead International stadium in order to give players the best possible surface to work from".

A "Versatile attacker makes [a] move following several seasons of standout performances at the Lamb" report Tamworth as they "confirm the departure of Kyle Finn, who has joined Halesowen Town FC for an undisclosed fee.

Finn, who has been a key part of the Lambs’ squad over the past few seasons, leaves... [according to] manager Andy Peaks... 'Due to family and work commitments. Kyle is finding it increasingly harder to commit to what he was doing with us, especially the hours and the long trips. We have had a good chat and I want to help him out, as he has been with us a few years and given everything to the club, including being top goal scorer when we won the National League North.

'Obviously I didn’t want to lose him, but he goes to Halesowen Town with my blessing. It’s a family decision which I respect'".

Phil Jordan reports that in Australia's PL Victoria, "When Oakleigh Cannons went down 2-5 last week to Melbourne Victory U21, it enabled their visitors to climb out of the relegation zone at the expense of St.Albans.

Now they're back in the drop zone as CONNOR HAMPSON and his colleagues went down 3-2 at St.Albans, the winner coming in the 94th minute".

Carlisle United have an interview with their Head of Football Operations, MARC TIERNEY, who, last season, was Director of Football at Altrincham.

Regan Linney became United's first addition of the summer, making the same switch Marc made from Altrincham to the Blues.

'I think everyone knows he was probably the hottest property in the league. Thankfully the owners backed us and we were able to be very reactive really to get that one over the line. It's obviously a huge coup for the football club to get someone that's not only scored so many goals at the level, but he's got real hunger and desire to do well and go on another level... Regan is one, who I obviously know first-hand, but I know the football club have had their eye on him for a while.

'We beat league competition, which I suppose just shows us the size of us as a club and as a pull'...

Talking on Martin Foyle's addition as Head of Recruitment, Marc said 'It was another positive for me that he wanted to come to our football club, he wanted to join the vision that we have for the football club, wanted to speak with Mark Hughes right away and get cracking on what we need.

'He's the best at what he does, and I'm glad to get him in the building'...

Speaking on further incomings and outgoings, Marc stated... 'It's something that I'll be keeping a close eye on, and obviously always in discussions with agents and with other clubs, and as I speak to Mark pretty much on a daily basis, just keeping contact over squad planning and what we think we need... If it's the right move, I'm sure that it'll be something that myself and Mark can take to the board and go through the due process'".

And Newcastle Town extend a "big welcome to SEAN LAWTON.

A left-sided player, 21 years old and former scholar at Crewe Alexandra before signing for Altrincham".

FC Halifax Town have relayed a National League statement in which the League "welcomes the official backing of the Football Supporters Association (FSA) for its 3UP Campaign, following a vote at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) last weekend.

The motion states that the FSA should incorporate 3UP into its official policy and, 'to support the growing campaign for three promotion and relegation places between the National League and EFL’s League Two.'

In practice this means, the FSA will now formally discuss and advocate on the issue with both The Football Association and the English Football League, during their regular ‘structured dialogue’ sessions throughout the year. The FSA will also encourage support from its fan groups in its League One, League Two and National League networks...

The FSA conducted a poll of its members who support clubs throughout the football pyramid. In total, 1,980 fans in total were surveyed and returned the following results:

93% supported the idea of 3UP; 83% of EFL fans surveyed backed the proposal. The most common reason for change was that it would make the system fairer (91%) and just over 90% believe it would enhance the attractiveness of the sporting pyramid...

The 3UP campaign aims to increase the number of promotion spots from two to three, aligning the National League with the high echelons the football pyramid...

In fact, since automatic promotion began from the National League to the EFL, none of the 57 teams promoted from the National League have ever suffered relegation the following season".

Head of Player Recruitment Lloyd Kerry added... 'He’s a creative left winger who travels well with the ball and commits full backs.

'He’ll work hard and do the other side of the game as well, you don’t play as many games as he has at National League level if you don’t do that'">

And from a club heading from the National League to the EFL, the Oldham Times tells us that Kane Drummond has returned to Oldham Athletic, signing a one-year deal with an option to extend.

The 24-year-old forward spent two months on loan with Latics, from October to early December, last season... but he was recalled early due to a succession of injuries for parent club Chesterfield.

However, he was released from the Spireites at the end of his contract this summer and Latics boss Micky Mellon was quick to snap up the former Macclesfield man...

'He's quick, direct and gives us something different in the wide areas... He's got a lot of raw potential. We've kept an eye on him for a while and believe he can grow with us'" said Micky Melon

Drummond, who can play on either wing or in a central attacking role, made seven National League appearances for Oldham".

ALTY, AS SEEN BY OTHERS

National League newcomers Truro City are profiling their new opponents for 2025-26 and this week it is Altrincham's turn to be depicted as others see us.

The narrative outlines how Alty lost out in the re-election process in 1977 season to Wimbledon (who replaced Workington) before further re-election disappointments despite winning the Alliance title twice.

It reminds us that last season "a slump in form, with only three more wins picked up between mid-February and the end of the season... saw Altrincham miss out on the play-offs and eventually they would finish ninth".

It describes the J. Davidson Stadium, pointing out that the Main Stand is "an old classic looking stand, it has glass windshields on either side, plus a number of supporting pillars, one of which is centrally located at the front of the stand.

Views of the pitch may be further impaired by two small floodlight pylons that are located at the two front edges of the stand. On one side of this stand is a smaller separate structure, the Family Stand. This is a very small covered all seated stand...

Opposite the Main Stand is the Popular Side. This is a covered terrace that runs the full length of the pitch, made unusual by having a section in the middle that has a higher roof compared to either side.

At the Golf Road End is a small covered terrace, whilst opposite, at the Hale End, there is a 16-step open terrace with large crush barriers to lean on".

ALTY OLD BOYS

Phil Jordan advises us that in the Irish Premier Division BARRY BAGGLEY was again on the St.Patricks bench, but was part of a triple halftime substitution with visitors Shelbourne a goal up - however, despite racking up 13 goal attempts, his side went down to that lone goal, which was Shelbourne's only attempt on target.

RELEGATED CLUBS

As Morecambe and Carlisle United adjust to a return to the non-League world, what are their prospects of recovering their EFL status?

In 1987 automatic relegation was introduced from the EFL's bottom tier into non-League's top flight.

The following clubs (still in existence) have been relegated or demoted from the EFL since 1987. Where are they now?

Clubs which became defunct after leaving the EFL after 1987 and have become new entities are excluded from the list below; that accounts for nine clubs, namely Aldershot, Chester City, Halifax Town, Hereford United, Macclesfield Town, Maidstone United (original club), Newport County, Rushden & Diamonds and Scarborough.

The extant relegated teams (in some cases relegated more than once) are listed below with their current status noted. The years shown in brackets in the list are the period(s) spent in the EFL.

  1. Aldershot Town (2008–13) at present in NATIONAL LEAGUE

NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

The BBC reports that "Gateshead have appointed Alun Armstrong as the club's new manager.

The 50-year-old replaces Carl Magnay who resigned earlier this month after a run of just five wins from the final 22 games of the season meant the Heed missed out on a play-off spot.

'I see it as a challenge, and it's something I'm really excited by,' Gateshead-born Armstrong told the club website. 'I want to bring some of the identity back to this club that I think it used to have.'

Armstrong has previously had spells as manager of Blyth Spartans and Darlington".

Gateshead add that Armstrong took charge of the club's under-19 side last season.

And Gateshead also report that after 215 appearances, defender Robbie Tinkler has left the club "following the expration of his contract"..

Sutton United "confirm that Craig Dundas will return to Sutton United in a coaching capacity, heading up the the college programme alongside Sid Dack,...

Dundas, who returns to Gander Green Lane for a fifth time... [after] celebrating over 500 appearances across four spells as a player...

Craig featured in two title-winning teams and has achieved cult-hero status with the supporters for his versatility and tenacity.

He originally joined the club’s coaching staff in 2016 before departing for Hampton & Richmond Borough for the 2018/19 season, but rejoined Sutton a year later. He subsequently took on a player/coach role during a further five years in SM1, before exiting again following the club’s relegation from League Two in 2024, at the age of 43".

OLLIE CRANKSHAW TO STAY

Altrincham FC reports that Ollie Crankshaw has been awarded a third-year on his contract.

The winger, who will be 27 in August, joined Altrincham at the end of August 2023 but suffered an ACL injury in only his second start, at Barnet in September 2023.

He was unable to add to those two appearances until game 10 of 24-25 season when he appeared for the last four minutes against Boston United on 21 September 2024. That season he was only able to complete 2(+3) appearances in the National League comprising just 150 minutes of action, and 2(+2) in cup competitions (152 minutes).

Right: Ollie Crankshaw pictured during his debut in September 2023

So over two seasons he has made 6(+5) appearances comprising 429 minutes.

Press and media officer John Edwards quotes Crankshaw as saying "I really appreciate the club and especially the gaffer putting faith in me, and I fully intend justifying it with my efforts on the pitch next season...

"This coming season is personal for me. I'll be making it my business to show all the fans who I am as a person and as a player, and I can’t wait to get going."

Manager Phil Parkinson added that "The reason we have signed him is that we believe he has got the capability to be the best player in the division. I feel he is over his injury problems now...

"I believe that, with what we have signed and with a fully-fit Olly Crankshaw, we can replace those goals and still be a potent force going forward, with lots of assists and goals in that front line. A fit Olly Crankshaw would be a marquee player for any team in this division."

Footnote: The announcement about Crankshaw means that all the futures of all of last season's outfield squad members have now been determined. Only goalkeeper Ethan Ross's future is to be announced.

REGAN'S AWAY DAYS

The NL Paper lists the top ten scorers in the Vanarama National and other leagues last season with their tallies split between home and away fixtures.

Top of the National League is York City's Ollie Pierce with 31 goals in all, followed by Alty's Regan Linney with 23 league goals.

Of the top ten, only Regan and ninth-placed Josh Barrett of Aldershot Town scored more goals away from home than at home. In Regan's case, thirteen goals were scored away from home and ten at the J Davidson Stadium..

In the NL North tables, the pattern is even more stark with just one player out of the top ten marksmen scoring more times away from home than at home. Curiously that is also an ex-Altrincham man, Ashley Hemmings, with 16 away goals and 14 at Aggborough, which made him that division's top scorer.

EIGHT NEW MANAGERS IN NATIONAL LEAGUE?

There will be at least eight managers of National League clubs at the start of the 2025-26 season who have not previously managed at that level.

Four of those bosses have previously only managed in the EFL or higher, whilst the other four have not managed at as high a level before.

The clubs with new managers who lack previous National League experience in the role are:

  • Brackley Town: Gavin Cowan, previously managed AFC Telford United in National North
  • Carlisle United: Mark Hughes, previously managed Wales, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, QPR, Stoke City, Southampton, Bradford City
  • FC Halifax Town: Adam Lakeland, previously managed Northwich Victoria, Farsley Celtic, Curzon Ashton and Kings Lynn Town (when in National North)
  • Gateshead:: Alun Armstrong, previously managed in National North at Blyth Spartans and Darlington
  • Hartlepool United:Simon Grayson, previously managed at Blackpool, Leeds United, Huddersfield Town, Preston North End, Sunderland, Bradford City, Fleetwood Town. He also managed in India and Nepal.
  • Morecambe: Derek Adams, previously managed several Scottish clubs, Bradford City and Plymouth Argyle; he is now in his third spell at Morecambe.
  • Scunthorpe United: Andy Butler, previously caretaker manager at Doncaster Rovers
  • Wealdstone: Sam Cox, previously managed Oxford City, appointed caretaker at Wealdstone in 2024 but not appointed manager till summer 2025

In addition, there will also be two bosses who are returning to manage in the National League in 2025-26 season after an absence, having previously managed at that level.

  • Truro City: John Askey, previously managed Macclesfield Town, York City and Hartlepool United in the National League
  • Boreham Wood: Luke Garrard, previously managed Boreham Wood in the National League

ALTY OLD BOYS

Ian Wilkinson reports that it was "not a convincing day for Timperley CC against Hyde on Saturday, with the visitors winning by 122 runs.

Hyde scored 246-9 with Lancashire CCC all-rounder George Balderson scoring 75. Timperley in reply mustered 124 all out.

OLLIE BYRNE opened the batting once again scoring 20 off 18 balls, including two sixes and one four at a strike rate of 111.11 (Nelson)".

JOSEPH AWARDED BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL

Altrincham FC's press and media officer Brian Flynn reports that "The King’s Birthday Honours List 2025 includes Alty fan, Joseph Adams, who has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to Altrincham Football Club and to charitable fundraising, raising over £425,000 for Altrincham FC Community Sports to fund disability sports and employability programmes.

The 22-year-old, completed his ‘No Limits’ challenge, an incredible ten 10K runs in ten countries over six days, between August 27-September 1, 2024.

Joseph, who has Downs Syndrome and was in special care for three weeks when he was born and didn’t walk until he was nearly three years old, is now a very active sportsman, competing in national swimming championships (coming first in the 25m breaststroke in 2023 and 2024) and regularly playing rugby, football, tennis, and cricket.

In March, superstar fundraiser, Joseph, was named Premier League Community Captain for 2025".

Right: Joseph is pictured receiving his Community Captain award at the J. Davidson Stadium in March.

ALTY OLD BOYS

TransferCentre9 reports that "Crawley Town have agreed to sign former Worthing striker DANNY CASHMAN (left) on a two year deal with the option of a third.

Cashman (right) looked set to sign for Southend United but the move stalled when EFL was put on the table".

Footnote: Cashman, aged 24, played 5(+3) times for Altrincham, on loan from Coventry City.

His Altrincham debut came at home to Wrexham on 4 February 2023 but that was to be the only match in which he completed ninety minutes. At Altrincham, he was named in 11 matchday squads, nine in the league but, on three occasions, he was an unused sub and only five times did he complete more than 10 minutes of action (excluding added time).

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

FC Halifax Town stated that "We can announce [our] new First Team Manager [as being] Adam Lakeland.

Adam joins The Shaymen following a successful spell at King’s Lynn Town where he secured survival in his first season before securing a play-off finish last time out.

Following a lengthy spell as manager of Blackburn Rovers Women, Adam joined Curzon Ashton as first team coach, where they achieved back-to-back promotions. In 2016, Adam joined Northwich Victoria as manager and they reached the Northern Premier League Division One North play-off final. A successful spell at Farsley Celtic followed as Lakeland achieved a play-off spot before winning the league to reach the National League North in 2019.

In 2021, Adam returned to Curzon Ashton, this time as manager. Early in the 2023/24 season, Lakeland made the switch to King’s Lynn where he oversaw a mid-table finish, before reaching the play-offs last season.

Adam will be joined by his assistant from both Curzon and King’s Lynn, former Shayman Sam Walker, who was a part of our first FA Trophy success in 2016".

This appointment came just hours after FC Halifax Town had confirmed "that Assistant Manager Andy Cooper will leave the Shaymen following Chris Millington’s recent departure and will assist with any handover to our new management team in due course

Andy Cooper on his departure osaid] 'I have decided that it is the right time for me to step away as I look to continue my journey as a first team assistant. My three years at FC Halifax Town have been truly memorable and I am better for the experience...

[Chairman] David Bosomworth [stated]... 'Andy has more than played his part as a great foil for Chris, with a calm and professional approach to everything he does'".

Otherwise, news from National League clubs is largely dominated by developments in the south of England, where, firstly, another assistant manager was departing his club...

Boreham Wood "confirm Luke Garrard’s backroom team ahead of the club’s eagerly anticipated return to the National League.

The club is saddened to inform the Wood Army faithful that club legend Mark Ricketts will not be continuing in his role as Assistant Manager for the 2025/26 season... Mark departs Meadow Park as one of club’s greatest servants ever as player, captain and Assistant Manager, with the club forever indebted to Mark...

Following internal discussions between Chairman Danny Hunter and First Team Manager Luke Garrard, the club are pleased to announce that Jack Payne will be stepping into the role as Assistant Manager for the upcoming season, which he will couple with his playing duties as player-Assistant Manager. The club can confirm that as a consequence of Jack’s transition into Luke’s backroom team, he will also relinquish captaincy, and the club will select a new team captain ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Completing Luke Garrard’s backroom team are Ross Weare (First Team Coach), Brandon Bevans (Lead Physical Performance Coach), Cav Costi (Lead Analyst) and Ciaran Pack (Senior Therapist.)"

Brackley Town "confirm the signing of central defender Kyle Morrison as the club’s first new addition ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The 29-year-old joins from Kidderminster Harriers, where he played a key role in their defence...

Manager Gavin Cowan expressed his excitement... 'Kyle is at a great stage of his career and this move brings both ambition and balance for him. His leadership, character, and ability will be pivotal...

At Kidderminster Harriers... he helped the club gain promotion via the play-offs... He then made the move to Solihull Moors, featuring more than 30 times last season...

Morrison said 'I'm really pleased to join Brackley Town. It’s a club that’s always been tough to play against'".

From Rochdale comes news of "the signing of defender Dan Moss. The 24-year-old, who has made over 130 National League appearances, has penned an initial one-year deal.

Moss commented... 'Rochdale is a massive club and to get it done, I came to the decision quite quickly and I’m buzzing'...

Moss began his career as a scholar in Burnley’s academy before linking up with Millwall in the summer of 2019, where he captained the under-23 side.

He spent time on loan at Yeovil Town and Leyton Orient during his time at The Den, before joining Woking on a permanent deal in 2022.

Moss featured predominantly as a right-back for the Cardinals... With Woking, he played over 110 times".

Aldershot Town "confirm that Dejan Tetek has signed a new contract with the Shots and will remain at the EBB Stadium for the 25/26 season!

Tetek joined the Shots in October 2023 after leaving Reading with a number of Championship appearances under his belt and has gone on to make 45 appearances...

Tetek said... 'We lifted the trophy at Wembley last season and that moment will always be special. Now, I’m ready to build on that success and help the team achieve even more'...

Tommy Widdrington added 'Dejan’s a player that we all love... We’re really delighted. Dejan’s a player who can do both sides of the game really well, he’s really good in and out of possession and reads the game well.'”

ALTY OLD BOYS

Phil Jordan tells us that in Australia's NPL Victoria, Melbourne Victory U21 were in the relegation spots before they kicked off at Oakleigh Cannons, but shocked CONNOR HAMPSON and his team mates by racing into a 3 goal lead inside 20 minutes, going on to win 2-5.

In the Irish Premier League, returning from suspension, BARRY BAGGLEY was left to languish on the St.Patricks bench as they paid the price for missing a first half penalty, being held 0-0 by visitors Drogheda.

Ian Wilkinson reports on OLLIE BYRNE who, on Thursday, played for Timperley CC in a group game in the 1st XI 20/20 competition.

The former Alty keeper batted at number four and struck two sixes in an innings of 18 scored off twelve balls. His Timperley side, hosting Stockport Georgians CC, made 197-7 in their innings

The visitors managed only 154-6 in reply, leaving Timperley the victors by 43 runs.

Meanwhile AFC Fylde "announce the appointment of CRAIG MAHON (left) as the club’s new Head Coach.

The 35-year-old joins from fellow National League North side Curzon Ashton where he has spent the last five years as both player and coach before being appointed permanent manager in 2024...

Mahon has made over 400 appearances in total across the National League and National League North, including a spell with the Coasters in 2013 when the club was still at Kellamergh Park..

The Irishman was in a player/coach role up until the end of last season, and made 27 National League North appearances whilst guiding the Nash to an impressive eighth-place finish, narrowly missing out on the play offs...

Mahon said 'I’m over the moon to be here. I’m really grateful to be given the opportunity... We’ll be looking in the next few weeks to build a squad, as well as a culture, that can bring the positive times back to the club and have a team the supporters can be proud of'...

AFC Fylde Chairman David Haythornthwaite added... 'We started with a list of around ten people we thought would fit the bill. As a result of past mistakes, we had several non-negotiables which we were determined to stick to.

'The first was a requirement to live within 60 mins driving distance of Mill Farm... The second was the brand of football we wanted to play, expansive, energetic, high press, possession-based football that gets the crowd on their feet'">

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

Rochdale co-Chairman Cameron Ogden reminds us that "It is easy to forget how difficult the situation was at the Club this time last year. Aside from the financial position, which was clear to all, the internal operations at the Club had necessarily been stripped back to the bare essentials, and many of the staff were going above and beyond just to keep the Club functioning at a basic level...

I am very pleased with how the team performed. A fourth-placed finish is an excellent result and an FA Trophy semi-final to boot...

However, we have strong reasons to be optimistic about the coming season. The core of our team is already in place and has had a season playing together...

Unfortunately... our Category 4 Academy will close on June 30th, as we are not permitted to apply for a licence under EPPP for 2025/26 due to it being our third season outside of the EFL. We have, however, joined forces with our Community Trust to ensure that we continue to offer full-time football opportunities for aspiring local 16-19-year-old players via our Sports College programme...

In terms of our fan engagement efforts, we have established a Club Advisory Board (CAB) with 17 members alongside Club representatives...

Work has commenced on a seasonal renovation of the surface of the pitch. I need to be clear with everyone that this is a surface renovation and not a complete rebuild. A complete rebuild is the only way we will solve the fundamental underlying issues we face. However, a rebuild is likely to cost close to £1.5m...

This season, we intend to have a strict regime in place to fully cover the pitch whenever there is material rainfall and to minimise the times before and after a game (and before and after rugby games) when it is uncovered in the wet...

At the time of writing, over 1,200 Season Tickets for the upcoming campaign have been sold".

Boston United "have bolstered the left side of their ranks by signing Scunthorpe United promotion winner Michael Kelly on a two-year deal. The 27-year-old has put pen-to-paper to become Graham Coughlan’s fifth new signing of the summer – having previous played under the United boss at Bristol Rovers...

He becomes the fifth new arrival – following hot-on-the-heels of goalkeeper Rhys Lovett, fellow defenders Jordan Cropper and Ben Grist and attacking midfielder Liam Waldock.

Kelly’s arrival compensates for the loss of Cameron Green, who has turned down United’s offer of a new deal to seek pastures new.

With fellow full-back Jai Rowe seeing his move to Scottish Championship side Raith Rovers announced at the weekend, both players move on with the club’s thanks".

Solihull Moors "announce that defender Tyler French has joined the club from Sutton United.

The 26-year-old central defender first caught the eye with AFC Sudbury as a youngster, earning a move to Bradford City in 2019. After two seasons there he moved to Wrexham before a spell at Dundee. Last season, having been named club captain, he was virtually ever present at Sutton and Head Coach Matt Taylor was more than pleased to welcome him to the Moors.

'You look for leaders and strong characters and Tyler fits the profile we need here', he said. 'He loves defending and reads the play really well. With Brad Nicholson signing last week and Alex Whitmore, our Player of the Season, already here we have a really strong mix in the heart of our defence'">

Brackley Town "confirm that midfielder Alfie Bates is leaving the club.

Alfie joined the Saints in January 2023 from Finnish club SJK Seinajoki and has gone on to make 107 appearances and score 4 goals in a Brackley Town shirt...

Gavin Cowan had this to say... 'Alfie has been nothing short of magnificent for me and this club. It’s only down to Alfie’s work commitments that we feel we have to safeguard the club and a deal couldn’t be done. He is captain material, an incredible player and one of the best characters you’ll see in a changing room but it’s not to be right now. I’m hoping to work with him again in the future'".

Woking "announce the signing of Jack Turner.

The central midfielder, 22, joins following two years at Scottish Championship side Queen’s Park.

A Southampton academy product, Turner signed his first professional contract with the Saints in July 2021, being promoted to the first team in February 2022. A loan move to Braintree Town in the National League South followed in January 2023...

In June 2023, Turner moved up to Scotland to join Queen’s Park. In total, he made 90 appearances for the club...

Director of Football Jody Brown said, 'With the exception of Harry Beautyman, who predominantly plays closer to the front players, we need to find more goals from the deeper positions'">

Carlisle United "confirm midfielder Will Patching has joined Northern Irish side Coleraine FC on loan until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Patching, 26, joined United in January from Derry City and [has] featured on ten occasions since his arrival in Cumbria.

Head of Football Operations, MARC TIERNEY said 'We believe this move offers Will the opportunity for valuable first team game time under a manager who knows him well. The loan agreement includes a recall option during January'">

ALTY'S NEW TRIO

In the Sale & Altrincham Messenger press and media officer John Edwards writes that "Phil Parkinson has moved to reinforce a depleted Altrincham strike force after Alex Newby followed Regan Linney out of the door at The J.Davidson Stadium to leave a gaping 38-goal hole in the Robins’ attacking resources...

While there was clearly a sense of frustration at the loss of Newby, Alty boss Parkinson wasted no time plugging the gaps, as he snapped up in-demand striker James Gale, from Mansfield Town, and highly-rated frontrunner Jimmy Knowles, from Accrington Stanley, for an undisclosed fee.

Remarkably, Gale, Knowles and another recent signing Keaton Ward have all played together at Mansfield and Boston United prior to joining Alty, and Parkinson explained why that’s no coincidence.

'It’s a real positive that they have played together before and know each other, as it gives us an element of continuity while we rebuild the frontline,' he said.. 'That was part of the mindset in signing these three, but the biggest thing is they are all quality players in their own right...

'Jimmy is one of the best finishers I’ve seen in a long, long time and I truly believe we have unearthed another gem in James@".

ALTY OLD BOYS

Torquay United report "the signing of midfielder CALLUM DOLAN (right) on a one-year deal after leaving League Two side Fleetwood Town.

Dolan, 24, arrives in the English Riviera after spending last season on loan to Oldham Athletic and Altrincham.

The all-action midfielder was snapped up by Fleetwood in January 2023 after Dolan’s impressive goalscoring record for Warrington Rylands peaked [sic] the interest of clubs in the Football League. After competition for his signature it was The Fishermen who added the talented midfielder to their ranks.

The Yellow Army will remember the midfielder fondly after a successful loan period with United in 2023 when Dolan made six appearances scoring two goals before being recalled".

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

At Hartlepool United the club has announced "the appointment of Simon Grayson as the Club’s new First Team Manager with immediate effect.

The former Premier League player comes with an impressive record in management including no less than four EFL promotions with Preston North End, Huddersfield Town, Leeds United and Blackpool FC.

More recently, Simon has experienced management roles in both the Nepal and Indian Super Leagues...

Club Chairman, Raj Singh commented:... 'Simon is someone who has been on our radar for a while and he’s been my preferred candidate in the past when we’ve looked for managers, but for one reason or the other it didn’t come off...We’ve been able to secure him for an initial 2 year period"

This was accompanied by an announcement from Hartlepool United that it had "parted company with Head Coach Anthony Limbrick...

All Board members were consulted and it was decided that a change was needed".

The BBC reports that "Carlisle United have brought in veteran manager Paul Hart in an advisory role to the club's board.

Hart, who has managed nine clubs and had various roles at others, took part in Carlisle's strategic review. The 72-year-old... will work on a part-time consultancy basis at Brunton Park...

The strategic review undertaken at Carlisle followed successive relegations"

Chairman Tom Piatak, a "Florida-based American said Carlisle's performance over the past two seasons was 'unacceptable' and a 'full reset', external was required. He said recruitment over the past three transfer windows had "not met expectations" with Carlisle using 42 players as they finished 23rd in League Two, seven points shy of safety...

Going forward, Piatak said the club's aim is to be 'the fittest, best prepared team in the National League... Our entire focus is on getting back to the EFL,'" he added.

At Wealdstone, the club is "delighted to welcome former Barrow AFC defender Junior Tiensia... on a permanent deal!

Junior is a versatile, left-sided defender with dynamic and physical attributes, who began his career in the youth ranks of Millwall. The 24-year-old was quick to gain first-team experience, going out on loan to Havant & Waterlooville at just 19 years-old, making five appearances.

The defender has a healthy pedigree of National League experience, with loan moves at Sutton United and Dover Athletic following his stint with the Hawks.

Upon his departure from the Lions, Junior joined National League North side Gloucester City on a permanent deal at the start of the 2022/23 season... before joining National League side Solihull Moors in March of the same season.

Seven appearances for the Moors later, Junior would make the deserved step up to the EFL, joining League Two side Barrow at the start of the 2023/24 season, where he would make 17 appearances for the Bluebirds before the expiry of his contract this summer...

Stones Manager Sam Cox was delighted [saying] ... 'He brings energy, physicality and he's a top human being along with that'">

TOM LEADS THE WAY

With Regan Linney, Alex Newby and Justin Amaluzor all having left Altrincham this summer, that leaves midfielder Tom Crawford (right) as Alty's remaining leading scorer from last season.

With Joe Nuttall and Amaluzor he was joint third top-scorer for Alty in the League last season, with four goals to his name.

However, Tom was the club's leading scorer in cup competitions, beating Linney, Newby and Amaluzor with the five times that he netted in cup matches which brought his season's haul to nine goals in all competitions.

ALTY TO VISIT DARLINGTON

Altrincham have added a long-distance pre-season friendly to their summer schedule as they announce a game away trip to Darlington onSaturday, 26 July.

This comes on top of two other long-distance pre-season games which will take place on the Isle of Man earlier in July.

Altrincham and Darlington were last in the same division (National North) in 2019-20 but the away game for Altrincham was never played owing to the truncation of the seaspon by the COVID pandemic.

SO Alty last visited Darlington was the previous season on 25 August 2018 when Alty won 3-0 at Blackwell Meadows.

Above: On Alty's last visit to Blackwell Meadows, Elliot Wynne was making his debut in the Alty goal. Here he awaits a Darlington corner in the first half.

NEWBY OUT

For the second season running Altrincham have lost their top scorer (Conn-Clarke last year, Linney this) but this time they have also lost their second top-scorer as well.

Altrincham FC announce, in a brief statement, that "Following discussions regarding his future, Alex Newby has informed the club of his decision to leave and has signed with York City.

The club, through manager Phil Parkinson, made an offer to retain Alex for the upcoming season on substantially improved terms, reflecting both his contribution and his importance to the squad. However, Alex has chosen to pursue an opportunity elsewhere...

We thank Alex for his efforts during his time at Altrincham".

York City report that "On putting pen to paper with the Minstermen, Newby told us, 'It’s brilliant to be here, it’s a great move for me, it’s something that I was really keen to get done as soon as it was mentioned'".

Footnote: So, inside a week, Alty have lost both of their top scorers in the 24/25 season (Linney, Newby) and, earlier this summer, also lost one of their joint-third NL goalscorers (Amaluzor). 42 of their 68 league goals came from that trio.

But, unlike last season when they also lost their top marksman, Chris Conn-Clarke, to EFL1 club Peterborough United, this time both of the leading scorers have joined rival clubs in the National League so will be active against their former paymasters next season.

Alex Newby, who is 30 this year, arrived at Altrincham on loan from Colchester United in September 2023. He scored for Alty within five minutes of his debut, against Ebbsfleet United, on 23 September 2023.

His loan was converted into a permamnent signing at the end of January 2024 by which time he had made 20 appearances.

During 2024-25 season playing most effectively in the number ten role, he netted 15 times during the campaign and contributed many assists. In all he had made 86(+5) appearances and scored 28 goals before departing for York City.

KNOWLES IN

Altrincham FC have wasted no time in seeking to replace Regan Linney following his move to Carlisle United

Press and media officer John Edwards reports that "Phil Parkinson has added [in his own words] 'one of the best finishers I've seen for a long, long time' to Altrincham's attack after landing Jimmy Knowles from Accrington Stanley for an undisclosed fee."

As noted here the two earlier signings revealed in the past week, James Gale and Keaton Ward had both played together for two clubs; Mansfield Town and Boston United. And now we learn that "James, Jimmy and Keaton Ward all hav[e] spent time together at both Mansfield and Boston United"!

Manager Parkinson explained by saying 'It's a real positive that they have played together before and know each other, as it gives us an element of continuity while we rebuild the frontline... Hopefully that will give us a head start. That was part of the mindset in signing these three, but the biggest thing is they are all quality players in their own right".

Regarding Knowles, the Alty manager added, "He is a player we came across last season, and we studied him a lot when he played at Boston. He's got every type of finish you need to be a top goalscorer, and we feel he will be a real force at this level, given the opportunity to play.

"In fact, I'd say Jimmy is one of the best finishers I have seen for a long, long time".

Tom Jolley has interviewed Konwles for Alty TV.

In the interview he says "I know both Keaton and James very well, and that can only help. I played with Keaton a lot more at Boston, and we have a really good connection on and off the pitch.

"I was with Galey at Mansfield and Boston, and there's a good connection there as well, so I think we will work well together."

ALTY OLD BOYS: REGAN PRAISED

At Carlisle United Head Coach Mark Hughes has spoken about Regan Linney [right] saying, "'[There was] obviously a lot of interest in Regan from leagues above, so yes, I'm really excited by the prospect of him putting on the shirt. I think he’s going to add a lot to our threat at the top end of the pitch, he’s very versatile, he likes to work the left side channels and cut in and get lots of shots in.

'He can also play down the middle. He’s got a little bit about him as well, which I always like in a player, a bit of character, a bit of nouse in terms of going about the game and effecting opposition defenders. So yes, really looking forward to working with him.

'He’s demanding of himself and demanding of his teammates as well, that’s been well documented and having done a bit of background work in terms of his character then that came through right from the outset that he is very demanding of himself and he will demand performances from his teammates which is the character that we want at this club'...

He added 'I feel this is a step up for him, he’s going to a bigger club, with a bigger fan base so he’s really excited to engage with our fans because that’s a big part of how he gets himself going and gets the juices flowing. When he plays it’s that interaction with the crowd that he feeds off, so we’re really going to benefit from that.'"

Hughes went on to confirm that "We will carry fewer players this year. That means some players will probably leave".

TVOS has been edited and compiled for 24 years by Dale season ticket holder and Programme Editor Mark Wilbraham, winning numerous awards in that time.

AT Southend United chairman Justin Rees recalls that "The first full season of our custodianship of Southend United ended in heartbreak at Wembley just over a week ago...

However, when we zoom out and reflect on the past 12 months, a great deal has changed.

From almost being ushered out the back door of the National League before a ball was kicked, to almost leaving through the front door on the grand stage of Wembley – the transformation in just one season speaks volumes.

We’ve gone from fighting to keep the club alive, to daring to dream again...

We remain guided by the three core responsibilities we set ourselves as custodians of this great club:

  • To bring joy to our fans through football
  • To help the wider community within which we operate
  • To run the club sustainably so it can serve future generations

Forest Green Rovers "are pleased to announce that Mark Bowen is FGR’s new Director of Football. Mark brings a wealth of experience with over 40 years as Player, Coach, Manager and Sport Director at the highest levels.

During that time Mark built a young, dynamic squad, through difficult circumstances, that narrowly missed out on promotion from League One last season.

Scunthorpe United "announce former Gainsborough Trinity marksman Declan Howe as our second signing of the summer.

Having come through the youth ranks at Scunthorpe before being released and falling into the non-league pyramid, the 27-year-old became a prolific goalscorer for the likes of Staveley Miners Welfare and Cleethorpes Town that earned him a move to National League North side Darlington FC, this was before transferring across to Alfreton Town... and later linking up former Scunthorpe manager Wilcox at Trinity...

Howe said 'It's where I started off when I was younger. To come back here later in my career is exciting'">

JAMES GALE

Altrincham announced the signing of 23 year-old striker James Gale (height 1.94m) on Sunday. He became the club's fourth new signing following the arrivals of defender Sam Reed (aged 22) and Billy Sass-Davies (aged 25) as well as midfielder Keaton Ward (aged 25).

Ward and Gale had played together at both Mansfield Town and Boston United, whilst Sass-Davies had left Hartlepool United and Reed, most recently, had been on loan from Sheffield Wednesday at Scarborough Athletic.

Gale spent his early football career, until the age of 14, in the Derby County youth system.

James then joined another Derbyshire club, Long Eaton United, leaving them in 2021 to join Mansfield Town where he was to make 6 starts and a further 31 appearances from the bench in EFL2 across seasons 2021-22 to 2023-24. He scored 4 times in EFL2.

Whilst there, he went out on loan to Guiseley, where he made 11 appearances in 2022.

Mansfield were promoted to EFL 1 in 2024 and James signed a two-year contract.

However, he was not to make any EFL1 appearances as Mansfield loaned him to Solihull Moors [8(+9) appearances and 3 goals from summer 2024 to January 2025] and then Boston United [3+(17) appearances and 3 goals in 2025].

In all he scored six times and enjoyed 1,053 minutes of game time in the National League whilst at Solihull and Boston in 2024-25.

LUCAS JOINS THE SQUAD

Altrincham FC announce that "Lucas Edwards has become the latest Altrincham prospect to graduate from Academy hopeful to fully-fledged member of the first-team squad.

What a proud moment for the 18-year old attacking left-back, who has taken the eye at The J.Davidson Stadium since becoming the first Alty under-16s player to make it into the Reserves team", writes press officer John Edwards.

Academy manager Paul Fay explains that Lucas "came to us for a trial, and you could see from the outset that he was an attacking left-back more than anything... but the work all the coaching staff have put in since has helped him develop into a very sound defender as well...

'I think Lucas was the youngest ever to play for the Reserves, certainly the first while still playing for the under-16s, and that's great credit to him.

'He did really well when he got his chance in the Cheshire Senior Cup, and he figured prominently in the FA Youth Cup run we had'".

Footnote: Left-back Lucas Edwards made his debut as the only Academy starter in the CSC match against Vauxhall Motors on 1 October 2024. The ten other players were all members of the first-team squad.

Two years earlier he had made his Altrincham Reserves' debut when aged only sixteen.

Lucas went on to captain Altrincham in their FA Youth Cup run to the First Round Proper in 2024.

He now joins Joel Bailey, Louie Fallon, Owen German and Remi Raymond as players who have graduated to the 2025-26 first-team squad from within the club's Academy and youth systems.

ALTY'S FOURTH SIGNING

Altrincham FC have made their fourth summer signing as press officer John Edwards reports that "Phil Parkinson has... pulled off a signing coup by landing in-demand striker James Gale from Mansfield Town...

The highly-rated 23-year old became an instant target for several clubs after his recent departure from Mansfield".

Gale explained that "I was on loan at Solihull Moors last season and, after the game here at Alty, he [Parkinson] had a quick word with me and said how much he admired me as a player,' said the six-foot-plus frontrunner. 'He was very complimentary, and that stuck with me.

'So, when he spoke to me in the same way after I left Mansfield, it was a no-brainer signing for him'".

The Alty boss added "I've been monitoring James for over three seasons now... I believe we have unearthed another gem in James".

GALE'S ALTY ENCOUNTERS

Although new signing James Gale is reported as saying that Phil Parkinson first spoke to him after a Solihull Moors visit to Moss Lane last season, Gale did not actually play in the league game nor the FA Cup tie played at Altrincham in the 2024-25 season.

However, Alty did encounter James Gale as a substitute for Solihull Moors when the Midlanders knocked Alty out in an Emirates FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round replay match on their own turf, a game played on Tuesday, 15 October, 2024. Gale scored what proved to be the last penalty in the deciding shootout.

A month later he was a very late sub as Solihull Moors drew 3-3 with Altrincham in a Vanarama National League match, again played in the Midlands, on Saturday, 9 November, 2024.

He was also a late substitute for Boston United as they defeated Alty 1-0 in Lincolnshire on 12 April, 2025.

Coincidentally, Gale has played with another new signing Keaton Ward. Both men were at Mansfield Town and, again, at Boston United together and, indeed, were both used substiutes, when Altrincham played away to the Pilgrims last season.

INTERVIEW

Tom Jolley interviewed Gale for Alty TV, where he recounts his football career and how he came to join Altrincham.

THREE FUTURES STILL TO BE DETERMINED

Following the renewal of Matty Kosylo's contract at Altrincham, the futures of just three of the club's 2024-25 squad remain uncertain to supporters.

The players in question, all experienced, are winger Ollie Crankshaw (aged 26), goalkeeper Ethan Ross (aged 28) and forward Alex Newby (aged 29).

In two of those cases, (Crankshaw and Ross) the situation is complicated by ACL injuries, in one case in the past (Crankshaw) and in the other instance, current (Ross).

  • Ollie Crankshaw (d.o.b. 12 August, 1998) Ollie has spent two seasons at Altrincham since signing from Stockport County for an undisclosed fee in August 2023.

He had made more than fifty appearances for County, before leaving for Altrincham.

However, in only his second appearance for Altrincham, he suffered an ACL injury which prematurely ended his season and caused him to miss the start of the 2024-25 season as well.

From September 2024 he did make 2(+4) starts in all competitions but was sidelined once more in November and did not appear again until the opening game of 2025 in the FA Trophy against Woking.

After two league starts, a further period of absence from the league squad followed from late January 2025 onwards.

In all, his Altrincham appearances in all competitions comprise six starts and five further appearances from the bench.

  • Ethan Ross (d.o.b. 6 March 1997) Six-foot five-inch Ethan Ross (pictured, right) initially joined Altrincham on loan for the 2023-24 season from Stockport County in a deal announced on 25 July 2023. After 15 impressive appearances, which included his saving three of the five penalties that he had faced, Ethan joined Altrincham on a permanent basis in a deal announced on 13 October 2023.

Ethan made his Robins debut at Macclesfield in a pre-season game on 26 July 2023 before becoming an ever-present between the sticks to the end of 2023 in the National League.

From summer 2024 Ethan was also described by the club as a (goalkeeping) coach.

After an almost ever-present and impressive first half of the league season, in game 28 at home to Braintree Town on 8 February 2025, Ethan was unable to complete the match and was diagnosed with an ACL injury requiring an operation and ruling him out of action for the remainder of the season.

Nevertheless, Ethan was voted the Altrincham FC Supporters' Player of the 2024-25 Season.

In all he has made 72 appearances for the club, to date.

  • Alex Newby (d.o.b. 21 November, 1995) The only uninjured member of the trio whose futures have not been announced, Alex arrived at Altrincham on loan from Colchester United. That move was announced on 21 September 2023 as, initially, a loan until 2 January 2024. But it was subsequently extended by a month.

Alex arrived at Moss Lane with a wealth of higher level experience, having made 108 EFL appearances for Rochdale and Colchester United. So, overall he had 71(+37) EFL appearances to his credit and had scored 15 goals in those matches.

He scored for Alty within five minutes of his debut, against Ebbsfleet United, on 23 September 2023. His permamnent signing by Altrincham was revealed on 30 January 2024 by which time he had made 20 appearances...

Alex continued his good form into 2024-25 season playing most effectively in the number ten role. He netted 15 times during the campaign.

His playing record for the Robins currently comprises 86 starts and five more substitute appearances. He has scored 28 goals in his time at the club and provided numerous assists.

Andy Steel commented on the announcement saying:... 'As a lifelong fan it has been a privilege to play a small role in the running of the club which has been an experience I will cherish. I’m not leaving the club and will be back on the Mill House terrace next season'...

Chairman Raj Singh commented on the changes... 'Andy informed us that he would be stepping down from his position during the course of last season and he has been planning this for some time linked to his retirement plans. As Andy leaves I’m also delighted to give a warm welcome to Neil Pinkerton who will join us as a Non-Executive Director.

'Neil is someone that has held a high position at Gateshead FC and done an incredible job over the last five or six years there. If he can replicate some of the success that they have had Hartlepool, then we will all be happy'">

York City report that "Ollie Pearce has been named the Vanarama National League Player of the Year for the 2024/25 season.

The striker claims a POTY award for the second year running, having fired in 46 goals in all competitions for Worthing before earning the move to North Yorkshire...

Pearce kept his form up with multiple match-winners as we approached the end of the season...

Not only has Pearce won the Keith Walwyn Memorial Golden Boot, a spot in the Vanarama National League Team of the Season, and the National Game Awards Player of the Year, but now also the league’s Player of the Year for 2024/25".

Tamworth report that "Lambs legend, fan favourite, and Players’ Player of the Season... goalkeeper Jas Singh has re-signed for his eighth season at the club...

A cornerstone of the team, Singh made 53 starts last season and was deservedly voted Players’ Player of the Season, highlighting the respect and admiration he commands within the dressing room.".

Manager Andy Peaks said, 'Delighted that Jas has committed for another season... He has been absolutely top drawer since myself and Champs came into the club'...

Regarding the renewal, Singh stated, "Once me and the gaffer spoke, it was simple. I’m happy, and in football, being happy is the most important thing. Hopefully we can build on what we’ve started in this league again. I think it will be even tougher as every team will strengthen, being in a full-time model. As a part-time team, we need the dressing room and fans to be together as one again.

"The fans have always welcomed me back every year I’ve returned".

In early April, Jerry Gill was appointed Interim Assistant Head Coach at Solihull Moors.

Now Solihull Moors announce that "Following the end of his short term deal with Moors, we can confirm that Jerry Gill has left the football club.

Darryl Eales, club Chairman, added the following comments 'I’d like to thank Jerry for his very positive contribution to Moors at the end of last season. His experience and enthusiasm helped turn around results at a critical point in the season and helped ensure that Moors were not dragged into a relegation battle.

'Personally, and on behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to wish Jerry all the very best in his future endeavours and he will always be welcomed back at the club.' ”

At Sutton United "Aaron Jones is set to offer his new side bags of experience and a real calm head at the back, with the reaction from Aldershot Town fans to his exit being telling...

Having signed for the Shots’ National League rivals Sutton, Jones had opted to give up the offer of a new contract at the EBB Stadium, fresh off lifting the Isuzu FA Trophy as Club Captain, and is a testament to the project shown to him by his new Head Coach, Steve Morison...

Aaron said... 'I was at Aldershot last season and we had a great year. We obviously won the FA Trophy but I was looking for a new challenge and when I spoke to the manager I think it was clear that the club wants to push in a positive direction; there’s lots of ambition and was something I definitely wanted to be a part of'...

Jones... spent a significant chunk of his life over in the United States of America, having been offered the chance to join Georgia State University... 'I was always into my studies and I thought what a great opportunity to go over there, get a fully funded education and still play football everyday. If you’re good enough when you graduate at 22, there’s no reason to say you won’t go and become a professional footballer which was the ultimate goal...

'I ended up spending five and a half years collectively in the States, graduated in 2016 and then went on to get drafted into the MLS by Philadelphia Union'...

A move to King’s Lynn Town, a side just 66 miles west of his birthplace in Great Yarmouth, came about in 2018, with Jones contributing to an incredible rise from the Southern League to the National League'...

The decision to follow manager Tommy Widdrington from the Linnets to Aldershot in 2023 kick-started a spell of full trust from his boss, being named Vice-Captain and later Club Captain...

'I owe Tommy Widdrington a lot... This year the league campaign wasn’t great, I think we finished 16th in the end, but to go and lift an FA Trophy in front of 19,000 fans was an incredible day and one I’ll never forget'".

KOSYLO SIGNS ON FOR A SIXTH SEASON

John Edwards reports on the Altrincham site, advising us that "Matty Kosylo has agreed a new deal that will not only guarantee Altrincham fans another year of his jinking runs and deft touches but provide him with a stepping stone towards a future in coaching.

Alty are... pleased that this latest contract breakthrough comes with an added bonus for both himself and the club... At 32 and with an eye on the future, he will be given the chance to provide a coaching input at the Robins' Egerton training ground...

'I'm really happy and proud to be signing again and heading into my sixth season with Alty,' he said. 'I love the club, and I love working with the manager and Sorvs and with the players at the club day-in day-out... Primarily my focus will still be on playing and pushing the other lads as normal. But the opportunity to be asked to take parts of sessions when needed and have access to learn the other side of the game from a coaching perspective is exciting for me', [he said].

Alty boss Phil Parkinson... said... 'He is someone who reflects everything I expect of an Altrincham player, in terms of how they look and how they conduct themselves. He drives standards both on and off the pitch. He will have a dual role next season but will still be very much focused on being a player, rather than a coach'"

Alty Files footnote: On 16 August, 2020, Matty Kosylo was revealed as a new signing by Altrincham, after leaving AFC Fylde. He had joined The Coasters in summer 2019 but had not replicated the success he had enjoyed over a three-year spell at FC Halifax Town, his previous club.

Earlier in his career, wingman Kosylo had played previously under Alty manager Phil Parkinson. That was back in 2014-16 at Nantwich Town, with Matty having begun his career at Stockport County before spells with Salford City, Ashton United, Hyde United and Vauxhall Motors (2013/14).

He left Nantwich for FC Halifax Town, for an undisclosed fee, in July 2016. At the time he was the Evo Stik NPL Young Player of the Year. Kosylo made a great impression in his three seasons at The Shay (2016-19), during which he scored 24 league goals in 74(+5) league appearances for The Shaymen.

Matty then joined AFC Fylde in 2019 but relegation in 2020 meant that The Coasters were prepared to release him from his contract to sign for Altrincham.

After his debut at home to Weymouth on 3 October 2020, he was a lively performer till injury limited his appearances in the second half of the campaign. In 2021 he missed a number of games through injury but in 2021-22 he had a successful season, netting ten times.

In May 2022 it was announced that he had re-signed for a further season. However, a pre-season ACL injury meant that he was out of action for the entire 2022-23 season but he returned to action in 2023 pre-season. He suffered another injury after half a dozen appearances before returning to action in late November 2023.

Another injury sidelined him until he returned over the Christmas period of 2023 but he was offered a new deal in summer 2024. 2024/25 saw him primariiy named on the bench but two sendings-off in the space of three league appearances over Christmas and New Year 2025 saw him banned for seven games in all.

Altrincham appearances to end of 2024/25 season: 101(+37), 22 goals

THIRD ALTRINCHAM SIGNING

Altrincham FC have made their third signing of the summer as full-back Sam Reed joins from Sheffield Wednesday.

"The 6ft 2in left-sided defender... gives Phil Parkinson high-calibre options at full-back in the wake of Lewis Banks and Tylor Golden both recently extending their stay at The J.Davidson Stadium...

22-year old Sam... said, "I'm comfortable playing multiple positions because I'm quite athletic and I like to think I'm all right on the ball, but I do mainly operate at left-back.

'I'd say I'm quite a progressive full-back, driving with the ball and trying to get forward whenever I can. I'm always looking to take people on and get shots off.

'I feel the defensive side of my game is very strong as well, but, whenever the opportunity is there, I will get forward and get crosses into the box'".

Manager Parkinson observed that "Sam is a young up-and-coming left-back who we have signed... after I monitored him all last season.

He is so versatile, he will suit us down to the ground. He is your modern-day full-back - he can invert or overlap and he has great physicality... and, being left-sided, he will give us balance when called upon at left-back. We now have great strength in depth in that area, three vying for two spots, which is exactly what we are looking for."

'He’s a strong character and an excellent defender', Manager Matt Taylor told us. 'He has been on our radar for a while and it’s fantastic that he wants to come and join us and be part of what we are trying to build. He’s a winner who plays with his heart on his sleeve'...

ALTY OLD BOYS

Just days after James JONES moved to Chester FC following his release from Altrincham, another ex-Alty player and former team-mate of Jones, Dan MOONEY, has left Chester and joined Kidderminster Harriers.

The "Chester FC site reminds us that "Mooney re-joined the Blues in January for a second spell at the club, and went on to make 17 appearances last term, scoring three goals".

Kidderminster Harriers manager "Adam Murray is confident Dan Mooney will prove a hit with Harriers fans this season... after failing to settle over the course of the last season or two...

He explained 'Dan’s someone I tried to get down to Eastbourne, but it was obviously too far to make the move with his family. For me Dan is one of the standout players at this level. He’s somebody who, at the minute, needs an environment that can get the best out of him.

'His last couple of moves, he’ll admit himself, he hasn’t settled and, as a footballer, when you do have that, there’s a reason you’re not settling.

'I’ve had a couple of really good chats with Dan, and I really like his character. He’s a feisty character and a firework, but I enjoy those characters!...

'He’s at a very good age but he’s very dynamic, he’s got X-Factor and is another one that that I feel, in the final third, will get people off their seat. He’s got an end product'".

Footnote: Dan Mooney is still only 25 years of age, having first arrived at Altrincham as a 20 year-old for an undisclosed fee from Fleetwwood Town in a move announced on 4 February 2020.

He had previously played against Altrincham for Chester FC and Ashton United whilst on loan spells from the Fleetwood club, for whom he made two first-team appearances.

His 2020-21 season was disrupted by injury and made just 13 starts and ten Altrincham appearances from the bench. 2021-22 promised to be better as he completed seven of the first ten fixtures but after that he failed to play for 90 minutes in any of the next 19 league fixtures.

Mooney surprisingly decided to move sideways to another National League club, Southend United, a move announced on 26 May 2022.

At that stage his Altrincham appearances comprised 55(+15) matches in which he had scored 18 goals.

After failing to settle at Southend, he returned to Altrincham just before Christmas 2023. He went on to make a further 8(+8) appearances, scoring once, to bring his Alty career total to 63(+23) appearances and his goal tally to nineteen.

Dan then moved to Boston United where he made some 13 appearances before he rejoined Chester FC in January 2025.

Since leaving Alty for the first time in 2022, in almost 100 appearances (including his second spell at Moss Lane), he has scored just four times.

TYLOR GOLDEN SIGNS UP

Altrincham FC reports that defender Tylor Golden (right) has extended his contract with the club, joining Lewis Banks, Jake Cooper and Isaac Marriott in doing so this summer.

Quoted by press and media officer John Edwards, the Alty left-back stated "I'm determined and ready to right the wrong of how the season ended last time out. We let ourselves down, but we will learn from those mistakes to achieve our goals because the quality of this squad and staff is too great not to have at least a play-off campaign.

"It’s been torture to watch the others taking part in the play-offs in recent weeks, so everything will be done to ensure there’s no repeat of that for us next season."

Manager Phil Parkinson opined that Tylor "has grown and improved immeasurably since joining us from Halifax".

Footnote: When Tylor arrived from FC Halifax Town last summer he faced a potential battle with Eddy Jones and Lewis Banks for a regular start on the flanks of the Altrincham back line. But Jones was sent off early on in the first game of the season with Golden coming on to hit the winning goal against Woking, and earn himself the "Goal of the Season" accolade.

Tylor went on to be an almost ever-present playing not only in Jones's position after the left-back suffered an ACL injury and missed more than half of the 24-25 season, but also putting in a number of impressive displays at right-back.

In all, Tylor made 46(+7) appearances and scored three times before the season was completed..

ALTY OLD BOYS

Preston North End report that former Alty loanee "Kacper PASIEK (left) has signed his first two-year professional contract" at Deepdale.

He initially joined Alty in New Year 20025 on a one-month loan and made his debut, from the bench, on the same day against Barnet in he FA Trophy.

He scored a fine goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers U21 in the National League Cup in January and his loan was extended for a further month in a move announced on 4 February 2025. However, almost immediately he was back at Deepdale, on the bench for an FA Cup tie on 8 February.

Nevertheless he returned to Altrincham and played several more times for the club before another recall towards the end of March triggered the end of his stay at Moss Lane.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

Moore said... 'While we’re sad to see him go, he leaves with our complete blessing to take on a fantastic opportunity closer to home and his family, so we wish him nothing but the best'".

Dagenham & Redbridge tell us that "Bradbury, 49, arrives at Victoria Road with a wealth of managerial experience and a strong track record across English Football..

The Board identified Bradbury as the ideal candidate to lead the Daggers into a new era, citing his experience of winning as a manager at this level and working in a number of promoted sides".

Tyneside's Chronicle Live reveals that "Gateshead are currently unable to register players for the 2025/26 National League season after being placed under a registration ban by FIFA.

The Heed have endured a challenging start to the summer following the departures of chairman Neil Pinkerton, manager Carl Magnay, club captain Greg Olley, club doctor Ross Floyd and head of recruitment Luke Clark.

A number of scouts working as part of Clark’s extensive recruitment team that have played key roles over the last 18 months have also confirmed their departure from their roles at the International Stadium in recent days too."

A Gateshead statement indicated that “We are aware of the situation and are currently in contact with the relevant authorities in order to resolve the issue, which we are confident will have no effect on our plans for the upcoming season”

The Chronicle adds that "The Heed are making progress in their bid to find a permanent successor to former manager Carl Magnay, who resigned... before being named as assistant manager at National League North neighbours South Shields less than 24 hours later....

Chronicle Live understands Gateshead have received over 40 serious expressions of interest from managers and coaches with EFL and National League experience".

"Optimising IT, a certified... leading provider of managed IT services, is proud to announce its new partnership with Forest Green Rovers Football Club, recognised globally as the greenest football club in the world.

This exciting collaboration marks the beginning of a shared journey rooted in sustainability, innovation, and community impact...

Forest Green Rovers, the world’s first vegan football club and an UN-recognised climate champion, continues to lead the way in sustainable sport. This partnership with Optimising IT reinforces both organisations’ dedication to doing business differently and putting people and the planet first".

The National League "acknowledges York City FC’s open letter regarding the current promotion places between the league and EFL League Two...

. The 3UP campaign aims to increase the number of promotion spots from two to three, aligning the National League with the high echelons the football pyramid. Under the existing structure, only the National League champions earn automatic promotion, with the second to seventh-place teams battling it out through play-off matches for the other slot.

The National League has proposed that three teams be promoted to EFL League Two, as soon as is logistically possible...

The EFL alone has the ability to facilitate this change, and the National League has been in regular dialogue with them this year...

The campaign has garnered widespread support from clubs and fans alike across the English football landscape. A survey of fans by the FSA showed overwhelming support of the 3UP from fans of Premier League, EFL and National League clubs. 1,980 fans in total were surveyed and returned the following results:

  • 93% agreed with 3UP in principle
  • 87% of all fans agreed it should be put in place for the 25/26 season
  • 86% of Premier League & EFL fans surveyed supported 3UP in principle
  • 83% of EFL fans surveyed supported 3UP in principle

It’s been over 20 years since the National League gained a second promotion place back in 2003 with over 32 current EFL clubs having spent time in the National League in the past...

In fact, since automatic promotion began from the National League to the EFL, none of the 57 teams promoted from the National League have ever suffered relegation the following season, a record added to by the success of both Chesterfield and Bromley this season.

National League Chair, Jack Pearce MBE said: 'Of course we acknowledge York’s position this season and recent statement. We agree with the sentiment of more promotion places and continue to lobby the EFL to get a third place as soon as possible".

Alty Files footnote: Even if 3UP comes about, it will not prevent the "injustice" of teams like York being beaten to promotion by lower-finishing teams in end of season play-offs.

AMALUZOR JOINS GRIMSBY

Grimsby Town confirm "the signing of dynamic wide forward Justin Amaluzor, who joins from Altrincham on a two-year deal.

The 28-year-old makes the move to Blundell Park on a free transfer, having made 76 appearances and scored 13 goals for the National League side since joining them in the summer of 2023.

Primarily a right-winger, Amaluzor began his career in the youth ranks at Barnet...

Amaluzor featured for Aldershot Town during the 2022/23 campaign before his switch to Altrincham. His 2023/24 season proved particularly impressive, as he played a key role in Altrincham’s fourth-place finish...

Head Coach David Artell said, 'Justin comes off the back of an excellent season at Altrincham and we feel he has a really high ceiling to continue his growth.

'He’s young, hungry and adds something completely different to the current squad. We are all looking forward to working with him!'

Right: Justin (nearest camera) is pictured with Regan Linney (no.9) and, facing the camera in the background, Eddy Jones. All three players have left Altrincham this summer.

Now, after nearly a decade away, Amaluzor returns to Sky Bet League Two, becoming Head Coach, David Artell’s first signing of the summer transfer window".

Footnote: Justin, who is now 28, arrived at Alty from Aldershot Town for an undisclosed fee and his signing was unveiled on 22 June 2023.

In his first season (23-24) for Altrincham he played 34(+6) times and scored seven times in all competitions; 31 of those starts were league games and all of his appearances from the bench and all of his goals came in the National League.

Last season (24/25) he made 30(+6) appearances and scored six in all competitions. In the NL he made 25(+4) appearances and scored on four occasions.

BILLY INTERVIEWED

Altrincham FC has press and media officer Brian Flynn's interview with new signing Billy Sass-Davies (right), who has joined the club for the third time, after two previous loan spells.

Billy arrives after making 5(+4) appearances for Altrincham across two curtailed loans at Moss Lane.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

The BBC reports that "Southend United chairman Justin Rees says the club will target automatic promotion next season after losing to Oldham Athletic in the 2024-25 National League play-off final at Wembley...

'I woke up the next day really, really driven, it's only nine weeks to next season. That should tell us that if you want to play in big games, cup games, play-off games, the more of them you play, unfortunately you are going to taste agony sometimes,' Rees told BBC Essex's Breakfast Show.

'We want to be back in that EFL. We should all be driven by this disappointment to attack next season and be chasing the top honours rather than jumping in there [the play-offs] on the final day'.

Australian businessman Rees led the COSU consortium (Custodians of Southend United) which took over the club from former owner Ron Martin last summer...

A report published last month revealed that 'intercompany loans totalling £19.4m were written off' as part of the takeover process and that the club made a £2.65m pre-tax loss in the 12 months ending July 2024.

But plans to upgrade parts of their Roots Hall stadium are ongoing...

'We're all deflated but not devastated,' said chief executive Tom Lawrence.... 'If you roll back 18 months we were a heartbeat away from going out of existence, so in the context of everything that's gone on, what the players, Kevin and the management team have achieved is just incredible@".

Gloverscast reports that "Midfielder Sonny Blu Lo-Everton has announced he has ended his time as a Yeovil Town player in a post on his social media.

The 22-year-old posted on his Twitter/X channel to confirm he had left the club before the club has published its retained and released list of players.

In the post, Sonny said... 'Would have loved to carry on and make more memories but that’s football'".

Boreham Wood "confirm that Junior Dixon is here on a permanent. The young, promising striker has agreed to a deal that will keep him at Meadow Park until at least the end of the 2026/27 season, following the conclusion of his contract with Championship outfit Birmingham City.

Since arriving on loan from the Blues last summer, Junior has been ever improving, playing a crucial role in our promotion push back to the National League, netting eight times across the 2024/25 season.

Junior... became a key weapon in Luke Garrard’s arsenal, whether in the starting eleven or coming off the bench to lead the line".

Sutton United "announces that Phil Letts has stepped down from the Board of Directors with immediate effect.

Phil and his family have a proud and longstanding association with the club, beginning with his grandfather, Andrew Letts. A true club stalwart, Andrew was inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of his exceptional contribution to Sutton United’s development.. and ultimately became the first Chairman of the Board of Directors—a role he held with distinction for six decades.

Phil joined the Board in 2013 during our time in the National League South, bringing a particular focus on the development of the club’s Academy and safeguarding practices".

NEWCOMER BILLY HAS A LONG ALTY HISTORY

Centre-back Billy SASS-DAVIES (d.o.b. 17 February 2000 in Abergele) has been announced by Altrincham FC as the club's second signing of the close season.

But, as well as becoming the latest signing at the J. Davidson Stadium, Billy also becomes the senior team member in terms of when he first joined the club. Indeed, it is the third time that Billy has joined Altrincham in the last six years and that makes him the current Alty player who goes back furthest at the club.

Sass-Davies arrives after spending last season with Hartlepool United who announced his departure last week "for family reasons".

For the Pools he made 20(+4) National League appearances last season but failed to score.

The Wales under-19 first signed for Altrincham on the eve of Alty's trip to York City in the National League North on 8 March 2019 on a season-long loan and he made his debut in that match as a substitute.

Above: As Alty celebrate in the background, Billy Sass-Davies (no.15) is seen in the game at York in March 2019.

Prior to joining Altrincham in 2019, Billy had just completed a loan spell at FC United of Manchester having previously had spells on loan at Colwyn Bay and Leek Town.

However, a three-week gap in Altrincham fixtures and an injury, as well as an early recall by Crewe on 13 April 2019, limited Billy to just two substitute appearances for Altrincham that season.

Having signed a new contract at Gresty Road in summer 2019, he went on loan to AFC Telford United in 2019-20 season, followed in February 2020 by a month's loan at Ashton United.

Billy also made his first-team debut for The Railwaymen and scored his debut first-team goal, for Crewe in the EFL Cup in September 2020

Billy Sass-Davies's second loan spell at Altrincham, this time competing in the National League but again from Crewe Alexandra, was announced on 6 November 2020.

This move had been prompted by a long-term injury to Toby Mullarkey and the summer departure of James Jones which, curiously, in 2025 is again a major factor in his arrival at the club.

Unfortunately, Billy's second loan at Altrincham was also curtailed. On this occasion it was by a recall to Crewe who were experiencing their own injury problems. In his second stay at Moss Lane, Billy made 5(+2) appearances.

Altrincham FC press officer John Edwards cites manager Phil Parkinson as saying "I'm really pleased to get Billy over the line, because he is a player I have hugely admired over the years.

"I have often gone in for him but missed out to other clubs for a number of reasons, timing being the main one...

"He will give us great physicality in both boxes and brilliant leadership and presence on the pitch, and he is a player I truly believe will improve us as a team and help us move forward as a football club."

Footnote: Alty career appearances to date 5(+4), 0 goals.

ALTY MILEAGE INCREASES

Had Southend United won the promotion play off, Altrincham would have been spared a 444-mile round trip to Roots Hall next season. In the event, the triumph of Oldham eliminates just a 44-mile round trip within Greater Manchester.

For Altrincham, the overall effect of relegation and promotion out of and into the National League for next season is that The Robins will have to travel 6,944 miles on 23 round-trips in 2025-26. That is an increase of 102 miles on last season, a rise largely brought about by the arrival in the division of Cornwall's Truro City.

Alty's trip to Truro alone will necessitate a round-trip of 644 miles! So, although three lengthy journeys to Dagenham, Maidenhead and Ebbsfleet have disappeared with those three clubs being relegated, the arrival of Truro City, Boreham Wood, Brackley Town and Carlisle United has brought four new return journeys of more than 250 miles each.

Above: The away end was packed when Oldham visited Altrincham in September 2024.

The loss of Oldham from Alty's fixture list has also potentially hit Altrincham's gate revenues with the home and away double last season attracting more than 9,000 spectators in total, of which 3,561 attended the match at the J. Davidson Stadium, which was the highest home gate of the league campaign.

When Alty returned to the National League in 2020, the mileage totalled 7,136, the slight reduction since then being matched by a gradual decline in the southern-England clubs' dominance of the division.

LINNEY SPEAKS ABOUT MOVE

After his move to Carlisle United Regan Linney said, 'Obviously, when I heard Carlisle were interested in me, it's a big thing...

On what made this the right challenge for him, he said 'It's how big the club is. Obviously, the gaffer as well. Mark Hughes as gaffer, it's obviously massive. It'll pull a lot of players to the club. Mark Hughes is a massive name and, obviously, if I can learn one or two things off him, then I'll be grateful.

'“But it was also the fan base, the club, everything around the place, and it works for me location-wise as well. So, everything comes hand-in-hand, really'...

Having worked with Marc Tierney last season, we asked if he had played a big part in getting the move done, Regan said 'He's made it easier, hasn't he? He's made it a lot easier. Marc's a good guy...

'I really enjoyed my time at Altrincham, so I just want to say that as well. Thank you to them, especially the gaffer there as well, Phil Parkinson. I was at FC United, leagues below this and he's given me the opportunity to go into full-time football and progress my career on. So, I'm really grateful for him and, obviously, Altrincham as a club as well. But, it's time for a new challenge...

'I wear my heart on my sleeve. I work extremely hard. Obviously, scoring goals is massive for a striker. That's what you're paid to do. So I do that, and I'm very direct. I can also play out wide if needed. I just love playing in front of fans. Fan bases are massive for me because that's what I play football to do...

'There was, obviously, interest from Football League clubs but I love a challenge... This is a Football League club and it should be there'".

Footnote: Linney is not the first Altrincham player to move to Carlisle United, following Joel Senior's move in 2020 and also that of Ryan Hevicon, who moved there in August 2002 after playing two games for Altrincham.

ALTY LINKED TO DEFENDER

The Sheffield Star reports that "Sheffield Wednesday youngster, Sam Reed, doesn’t appear to be short of options as he enters into the final month of his contract at Hillsborough.

The Owls defender, who recently turned 22, is one of several players who will be leaving the club this summer at the end of his current deal, but will move on after a very successful loan spell with Scarborough Athletic.

It’s understood that Altrincham are very keen to land Reed’s signature as a free agent now that he’s departing Middlewood Road, while Hartlepool and Halifax are also believed to be looking to try and get a deal done...

Reed has plenty of experience playing at senior level having turned out for Boston United as well as spending time in and around Wednesday’s first team".

ALTY OLD BOYS

Boston United report that "centre-half CONNOR TEALE (left) has committed his future to the club by signing a new two-year deal.

The 22-year-old, who arrived in the autumn following a brief spell with Altrincham, has pledged his long-term future to the Pilgrims following a hugely successful second half to the 2024-2025 campaign.

Teale scored three goals in 26 appearances as the Pilgrims overturned a sizeable points deficit to earn a second season in the National League.

He began his career at Fleetwood Town and enjoyed a number of loan spells away from Highbury, including one north of the border with Arbroath.

Teale will report for pre-season training at the beginning of July as United return to fully professional status for the first time since 2007".

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

Southend United "fell to a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat after extra-time in the Vanarama National League Promotion Final.

The Shrimpers had twice led through Charley Kendall and Leon Parillon, but Oldham came from behind twice and won the final thanks to two goals in the second half of extra-time.

There were two changes to the lineup from our semi-final win over Forest Green Rovers, as Jack Bridge replaced Leon Parillon and Cav Miley came in for Oli Coker...

Scott-Morriss played a ball over the top and Kendall beat the onrushing Matthew Hudson to the ball and broke the deadlock with a delicate lob over the Oldham ‘keeper...

After a strong first half from Blues... within a minute of play restarting, from a Reagan Ogle long throw, Manny Monthe was dragged down in the box by Goodliffe, and referee Elliot Bell pointed to the spot.

From 12 yards, Garner sent Hayes the wrong way to make it 1-1...

Nothing could separate the two teams, resulting in extra time being needed...

Extra time started... with an early goal... The underlapping Scott-Morriss['s] cross took a slight deflection and was parried into the air by Hudson straight to Parillon, who headed into the unguarded net from a couple of yards out...

Oldham equalised once again. Norwood got onto a long ball forward from Jesurun Uchegbulam and rounded Hayes before slotting into the empty net.

Two minutes later, the Latics took the lead when Kian Harratt’s cross evaded everyone and went into the far corner".

Meanwhile for victors Oldham Athletic there was a "play-off final parade (Monday 2 June)".

Oddly in the same article the club states "Please note there is no parade, the full celebrations will take place at this event, at Boundary Park"!

The event at the stadium was described as "an unforgettable evening of music, speeches, and a parade around Boundary Park..

Tickets for the event are priced at £5, with a total capacity of 13,500. This will be an all-ticket event, so make sure to grab yours before they sell out..

Live music will be on throughout the evening, with a lineup of four fantastic bands...

At the heart of the event will be a memorable parade around the ground. Players, management, and the club's board will all take part...

A special stage will be set up in the middle of the pitch, allowing speeches from the players, management, and club officials...

As the evening unfolds, fireworks will light up the night sky... The celebration will come to a close at 9:00 PM".

Whilst York City have every right to be disappointed to see fifth-placed Oldham Athletic reach the EFL despite finishing 23 points behind the second-placed Minstermen in the regular 2024-25 season, it should not be forgotten that when York regained National League status in 2022, they did so having finished in fifth place themselves, some 21 points behind second-placed Brackley Town who did not gain promotion at that time.

Despite this history, York City have sent an open letter to the National League in which Julie-Anne Uggla (co-chair) expresses "deep concern and disappointment at the current promotion system between the National League and League Two, following a season where York City FC, despite finishing 28 points clear of 7th place and winning 12 more matches, were denied promotion.

Such a glaring imbalance not only undermines sporting merit but erodes the very foundations of fair competition. To dominate a league campaign so comprehensively (Barnet the only exception), only to be forced into a playoff lottery, is structurally unjust. It penalises excellence and rewards clubs with fewer points in a way no professional league system should condone...

The '3UP' campaign rightly reflects the sentiment of every National League club and countless supporters. But waiting until 2025–26 only deepens the injustice for clubs like York City, who have already paid the price for a system built on outdated assumptions... The current system is simply not sustainable anymore".

Footnote: The EFL also operates promotion play-offs which allow similar "unjust" outcomes as regards promotion and whether or not "3UP" is implemented, that situation will not change.

FC Halifax Town "have announced that Club record appearance holder Sam Johnson has signed a new 2-year deal to keep him at the Shay.

Johnson originally signed for the Shaymen on loan from Port Vale back in November 2015 before joining Town permanently during the 2016/17 season and has become a real fans favourite".

The Shaymen are currently managerless after Chris Millington departed but, in an accompanying statement, Johnson writes "I'm delighted again to have signed [for] another two years at the club in what will see me moving into my 9th and 10th season".

In contrast, a goalkeeper is leaving Hartlepool United, as the Hartlepool Mail reports that "Hartlepool United goalkeeper Josh Mazfari has taken to X to announce his departure.

The 20-year-old leaves Pools after two years in the North East, spending time on loan at Shildon and Redcar Athletic. Although he never made a senior appearance... the former Huddersfield youngster enjoyed an impressive campaign at Redcar this term, keeping a remarkable 27 clean sheets in 42 games...

As recently as late March, Pools head coach Anthony Limbrick talked up Mazfari's chances of breaking into the first team".

Boston United "have snapped up Leicester City defender Ben Grist on a permanent basis.

The 20-year-old, who resides in Louth, has agreed a two-year contract at the Jakemans Community Stadium.

Grist, who progressed through Grimsby Town’s youth system prior to linking up with Leicester, will add defensive depth for Graham Coughlan’s squad.

He spent the second half of the 2024-2025 campaign on loan with Northern Premier League play-off winners Worksop Town".

At promoted Brackley Town "Francis Oliver Steps Down as Brackley Town Chairman After 22 Remarkable Years.

From the chairman, Francis Oliver:...

'The club has come a long way. With the club well placed and poised for even greater things in the years ahead this is the time for me to step aside as chairman. Matt Wise has been a director and has been heavily involved with the club for many years. Matt will now step in as chair and does so with my best wishes...

'I will remain as a director and will continue to enjoy time around the club and assisting Janene and the board as best I can as the club faces the inevitable challenges and continues to grow and develop..

'I could not feel more proud of our club and its place in the town'...

Our long-standing chairman, known universally as Olly, has been the rock upon which the survival and success of the club have been built. The club has been through some difficult times, not least the terrible fire, but Olly has steered the ship through troubled waters keeping the club on a firm financial footing, something that is almost unique among football clubs".

In a terse statement by chairman Bernard McWilliams, Gateshead "confirm that Carl Magnay has tended [i.e. tendered] his resignation as first-team manager.

"We thank Carl for his efforts during his time as manager...

"We will be looking toappoint a new manager as swiftly and efficiiently as possible".

MARRIOTT SIGNS UP

Altrincnam FC confirms that "Isaac Marriott (riht) will be snapping at opposition heels again next season after signing a new deal at The J.Davidson Stadium" writes John Edwards.

Phil Parkinson remarked, "I'm delighted Isaac has decided to commit another year to the football club. We all know what a strong player he can be in this division, and I'm really looking forward to working with him again next season."

Footnote: Isaac has suffered an injury affected two seasons but goes into 2025-26 hopefully fully fit once again.

A pre-season injury in summer 2022 meant that Isaac missed the start of the 2022-23 season and it was league game 18 before he started a game, on 8 November 2022. However, he soon re-established himself as a key figure in the team and was rewarded with a two-year contract extension, announced at the end of March 2023.

A serious ankle injury curtailed Isaac's appearances in March 2024 and a remedial operation ended his season prematurely as well as causing him to miss the opening weeks of the 2024-25 campaign. After a brief return a further injury lay-off saw him sidelined in January 2025 before he returned to league action in March.

Appearances to end of 2024/25 season: 103(+11), 3 goals.

ALTY'S 43 LEAGUE OPPONENTS!

2025-26 will be just the sixth consecutive season that Altrincham have been back in the National League after recovering from relegation from that level in 2016.

Nevertheless, they have already become the (joint) fifth current longest-serving member of the National League's top division.

They share a record of five completed consecutive seasons with Wealdstone and Woking. Only Aldershot Town and FC Halifax Town (since 2013-14), Eastleigh (2014-15) and Solihull Moors (2016-17) have been there longer and even The Shots had to rely on escaping demotion following a 21st place finish in 2021-22. Also the 2024-25 champions Barnet escaped relegaion in the 2020-21 curtailed season when they finished in the relegation places and the relegation process was not enacted.

By the time the 2025-26 season is completed, Altrincham will have faced no fewer than 43 different opponents in the National League in six campaigns whilst remaining in the same level of football, which clearly demonstrates the changing face of the division in that short time.

Just seven teams including Altrincham have been ever-present at that level since the start of 2020-21 season!

Alty's fellow-survivors are Aldershot Town, Eastleigh, FC Halifax Town, Solihull Moors, Wealdstone and Woking.

How has such volatility come about?

Other than being removed for financial or other reasons, there are four normal ways to enter or leave the National League's top flight.

  1. ROUTE 1: Promotion OUT of the National League, upwards into the EFL
  2. ROUTE 2: Promotion INTO the National League from its regional divisions
  3. ROUTE 3: Relegation FROM the NL top-flight to its regional divisions
  4. ROUTE 4: Relegation INTO the National League from the EFL

In the following lists, an asterisk indicates a team that is currently in the National League top division. Note that COVID prevented some movement between divisions and in 2021-22 only three teams were relegated from the NL.

ROUTE 1: In the past five seasons, TEN clubs have left the National League through promotion; Barnet, Bromley, Chesterfield, Grimsby Town, Hartlepool United, Notts County, Oldham Athletic, Stockport County, Sutton United*, Wrexham. Only Bromley and Sutton had not previously been EFL clubs and Sutton soon returned to non-League football.

Right: Scunthorpe United have uniquely suffered two relegations and one promiotion to end up back in the National League for next season. Here in the 2022 clash at Altrincham. Neil Sorvel talks to Ross Barrows who was then an Alty player but is now back with the Licolnshire club..

ROUTE 2: In the six seasons from 2020-21 to next season, 2025-26, TWENTY clubs have won promotion INTO the National League through promotion, of which TWELVE will be competing in the NL for 2025-26; AFC Fylde, Altrincham*, Boreham Wood*, Boston United*, Brackley Town*, Braintree Town*, Dorking Wanderers, Ebbsfleet United, Gateshead*, Kidderminster Harriers, King's Lynn Town, Maidstone United, Oxford City, Scunthorpe United*, Tamworth*, Truro City*, Wealdstone*, Weymouth, Yeovil Town*, York City*

ROUTE 3: In the past five seasons (2020-21 to 2024-25), FIFTEEN clubs have been relegated from the NL top-flight to its regional divisions; AFC Fylde, Boreham Wood*, Dagenham & Redbridge, Dorking Wanderers, Dover Athletic, Ebbsfleet United, Kidderminster Harriers, King's Lynn Town, Maidenhead United, Maidstone United, Oxford City, Scunthorpe United*, Torquay United, Weymouth, Yeovil Town*

ROUTE 4: In the past five seasons, TEN clubs have been relegated from the EFL into the National League, with just two back in the EFL by next season: Carlisle United*, Forest Green Rovers*, Grimsby Town, Hartlepool United*, Morecambe*, Oldham Athletic, Rochdale*, Scunthorpe United*, Southend United*, Sutton United*.

As can be seen a number of teams have both won a promotion and suffered a relegation in this period; most notably, Scunthorpe United have been relegated from both the EFL and Notional League as well as winning promotion back from the National North!

ALTY OLD BOYS

OLDHAM PROMOTED

Sky Sports News reports that "Oldham twice came from behind to beat Southend 3-2 in a dramatic National League play-off final and end a three-year absence from the English Football League.

In front of a record crowd of 52,115 at Wembley, substitutes James Norwood and Kian Harratt scored within the space of two minutes after Leon Chambers-Parillon had restored Southend's lead just seconds into extra time.

An early own-goal from Manny Monthe had given the Shrimpers the lead, but [it] was cancelled out by Joe Garner's penalty after Monthe had been brought down in the area.

Oldham boss Micky Mellon unsurprisingly named the same starting XI which won 3-0 against York in the semi-final, only to see his side concede their first goal of the play-offs with just four minutes on the clock.

Kian Harratt's 112th-minute winner sealed Oldham's return to the EFL".

OLDHAM PROMOTED

In a dramatic promotion play-off in front of more than 52,000 spectators, Oldham Athletic twice came from behind to defeat Southend United 3-2 after extra time at Wembley.

Southend went 2-1 up in extra time only for two goals in barely a minute to give the Latics the lead 3-2.

The Latics finished fifth in the regular season, twenty-three points behind second-placed York City, who remain in the National League.

One thing that Oldham did not achieve in the National League over three seasons was a league win over Altrincham! Their six encounters involved two wins for Altrincham and four draws. The Latics did however, secure an FA Cup win at Moss Lane in 2023-24 season.

ALTY OLD BOYS

Chester FC report "the signing of JAMES JONES...

The central defender has put pen to paper on a one-year-deal with the Blues... and becomes Calum McIntyre’s second new addition to the squad for the 2025/26 season alongside fellow defender Tom Leak.

Jones has been an integral cog in Altrincham’s back line for the previous three seasons, and was named club captain in the summer of 2023.

The 28-year-old made 146* appearances for the Robins over two spells, the first between 2017-20 before another three year stretch since 2022.

Sandwiched in between those stints was a two year stay in the EFL with Barrow, where he featured on 54 occasions...

Jones said 'I left Altrincham a couple of weeks ago and after looking at the clubs I could join, Chester was at the top of the list. In the past eight years I have played for Barrow and Altrincham, so Chester is the biggest club I have played for.

'Although I am coming down a level, I know the size of this football club. It’s in a division it shouldn’t be in'".

Footnote: James actually made 191 (+18) appearances or Altrincham and scored 19 times.

The England Veterans are "the current holders and seven-times winners of the Seniors World Cup, held annually by the SFA of Thailand since 2006".

Solihull Moors’ pitch at Damson Park is currently receiving a full overhaul under the watchful eye of new Head Groundsman Toby Ruoss.

Toby, 25, is one of the youngest Head Groundsmen in the country but has served quite an apprenticeship over the last six and a half years. Having started his career at MK Dons, he spent three years at Oxford United before leaving to work at a private school in High Wycombe. He then returned to football when he joined the groundstaff team at Luton Town before stepping up to take control at the Moors towards the end of last season.

'I’ve loved my time at the Moors' he told us. “It’s a friendly club and the staff and players have made me feel very at home. I will be looking after the pitches at the stadium and at the training ground at Studley alongside George Ramage...

'By the time the fans return the plan is for them to see a lush new pitch ready for a successful season.'”
