NEXT GAME: NOTTS COUNTY

Notts County have a pre-match video interview with Connell Rawlinson, discussing this Saturday's clash with Altrincham at Meadow Lane.

ALTY OUT OF YOUTH CUP

Altrincham FC Youth are out of the FA Youth Cup, losing 2-0 away to Chester FC in the Second Qualifying Round on wednesday evening.

In front of an attendance of 238, two second-half goals sank Altrincham.

Chester FC reported that they "advanced into the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Youth Cup tonight with a 2-0 win over Altrincham.

In a tight first half, Ben Croft went closest for the Blues, forcing Dane Byron into a stunning reaction stop.

But Chester weren’t to be denied on 68 minutes, when Sol Ashworth’s long throw fell into the path of Paige Wilding, who tucked home from close range.

Joe Beswick kept Mike Allcock’s side in front with a fantastic fingertip save to deny Sam Chambers on 77 minutes, before the Blues made it safe with four to play. Reece Daly capped an excellent display by scoring from a free kick which found the bottom corner."

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

The Mirror reports that Oldham Athletic player "Hallam Hope, 28, was allegedly attacked in a car park outside Boundary Park after a National League game on September 4

A Chesterfield footballer has been arrested in connection with an alleged assault... in a car park outside Oldham’s Boundary Park ground on September 4, after Chesterfield had won a National League game 2-0.

Hope, a 28-year-old Barbados international forward, required hospital treatment and has not played since the alleged attack. At the time the former Everton youth product said he would be 'out of action for some weeks.'

Now Greater Manchester Police have said that... 'A man was arrested on September 9, on suspicion of assault following a report of the assault of a man in his 20s, at Boundary Park, Oldham, on 4 September 2022'...

Both clubs said they are assisting police with their enquiries and Oldham reportedly submitted CCTV footage of the alleged incident".

Later SkySports reported that "James Rowe, 39, has resigned as manager of AFC Fylde after being charged with sexual assault this week; Rowe is due to appear in court on November 7; Rowe was previously manager of Chesterfield..

A Fylde statement said 'Following a meeting this afternoon, the board have accepted James Rowe's resignation as manager of the club... Fylde, of National League North, appointed Rowe in March on a three-year deal with chairman David Haythornthwaite saying 'We have done our due diligence on James, and while it is clear he is no shrinking violet, we are confident that James will bring a winning mentality to the club, which we all want'".

At Southend United "Blues midfielder Noor Husin is looking forward to getting more minutes under his belt after returning from injury two weeks ago.

Having played the first two games of the season, the 25-year-old then missed a large chunk of games, but returned for the goalless draw with Wrexham and played the full 90 minutes against Wealdstone last weekend.

He said 'It was frustrating being out for a month. It was difficult because my season didn’t really get started... For me, it’s all about rhythm and I didn’t really get to build that up'....

Blues haven’t conceded a goal since Husin came back into the team...

'The clean sheets give you something to build off. We should’ve got something more out of the Wrexham game, but the building blocks are there'...

August Player of the Month Cav Miley has been Husin’s partner in the centre of midfield in the last two games, and the summer signing from Eastleigh has played every minute so far.

On their partnership, Husin said... 'I enjoy playing with him. We both work hard'. The Afghanistan international also noted the strong spirit amongst the squad, saying how good the atmosphere is around the training ground".

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

According to the Derbyshire Times "The Spireites have made their best ever start to a season in the club’s history after going 10 games unbeaten...

Paul Cook’s free-flowing approach has resulted in 12 different players, the most in the league, getting on the scoresheet already this campaign. Tshimanga, Akwasi Asante and Jeff King all have three goals, Joe Quigley, Ollie Banks and Liam Mandeville have two each, while Armando Dobra, Jesurun Uchegbulam, Jack Clarke, Darren Oldaker, Tyrone Williams and Jamie Grimes are also off the mark with one...

Although Wrexham are behind in the number of goalscorers compared to the Spireites, the Welsh club will point to the fact that they have hit the back of the net the most times this season (29) and they have strikers Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer on eight goals and seven goals respectively.

Fans of Notts County can make a similar argument, in that they also have scored more goals overall (24) than Town (21), and they have their league’s top scorer in their ranks in Macaulay Langstaff who has blasted in 12 goals in 10 games already."

Meanwhile SkySports reports that manager "James Rowe, 39, left Chesterfield by mutual consent in February with the club top of the National League after being suspended by the Spireites two weeks earlier 'pending an investigation into allegations of misconduct'; Rowe is due to appear in court on November 7

Derbyshire Police said in a statement on Wednesday 'A man has been charged with sexual assault. In January this year, officers received a report of a man having sexually assaulted a woman in Chesterfield, with the offence alleged to have taken place in November 2021.

'James Rowe, 39, of Breaston, in Derby, has now been charged and is due to appear before magistrates at Chesterfield Justice Centre on Monday, November 7.'

Fylde, of National League North, appointed Rowe in March on a three-year deal...

Chesterfield vice-chair Martin Thacker told an AGM in March 'We would not want to get rid of a manager that has got this team top of the league unless there was good reason to have to part company.

'The difficulty for us is that it is not appropriate for us to disclose the elements of what happened, the allegations, the insinuations, and all the things that were put to us.'"

NEXT GAME: NOTTS COUNTY

Altirincham are away to Notts County on Saturday. Notts County report that "Midfielder Jim O'Brien is just one card away from a one-match suspension.

Notts County have enjoyed an excellent start to the National League season under new manager Luke Williams.

After ten games, the Magpies sit third in the table following their 3-1 victory over York City... Their next encounter comes in the form of Altrincham...

However, one Notts player in particular must be wary of his discipline against Altrincham this weekend. In all of England’s professional leagues, players will receive a one-match ban if they collect five yellow cards in their team’s opening 19 matches of a league campaign.

Midfielder Jim O'Brien currently has four yellow cards to his name so far this season. A fifth booking in the game against Altrincham at Meadow Lane would be a huge blow for the Magpies, meaning the 34-year-old would miss Notts' top of the table clash with Wrexham on Tuesday, October 4."

ALTY OLD BOY

According to the Derbyshire Times, "Montel Gibson has left Ilkeston Town to sign for National League North outfit AFC Telford United on loan until the end of the season.

Gibson (right) has scored six times for the Robins this season having rejoined the club in the last campaign, and has scored 24 goals in 48 appearances over his two spells with Ilkeston having initially signed as a teenager...

He moved to Halesowen Town and then Grimsby Town and then featured for the likes of Stourbridge and Altrincham before returning to Ilkeston.

Having helped the Robins to promotion as champions of the NPL Division One Central last season, he has been a star performer for the Erewash side in this campaign and Telford, who are second-from-bottom of the National League North with just one win to their name so far, have now enlisted his services until the end of the campaign".

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

Oldham Athletic "announce the signing of John Rooney from Barrow.

The 31-year-old midfielder, brother of former Manchester United and England international, Wayne, joins Latics on a two-year deal, with the option of a third...

Manager David Unsworth had nothing but praise... 'He’s got bags of experience and he’s scored a lot of goals in The National League and League Two,' he said...

'He’s a leader on the pitch, and he’s telling lads what he wants them to do, which is great... He’ll link up our attacking play, which is a top part of his game.'

Rooney started out in the Everton youth set-up, before being released and joining Macclesfield’s youth team. He made his professional debut for The Silkmen in 2008, before... spending time with Barnsley and Bury, but he couldn't nail down a first-team spot.

His big break came with Chester in 2013, and eventually he was hitting double figures for the Seals, before departing for Wrexham in 2016.

Rooney joined Barrow after a season each with Wrexham and Guiseley...

The attack-minded midfielder joined Stockport County, having another prolific season with 16 goals to his name... before returning to Barrow in January...

Oldham Athletic can confirm that Tommy Wright has left his position as First Team Coach."

NEXT GAME: NOTTS COUNTY

Altrincham travel to Notts County on Saturday and from there, the Nottingham Post reports that "Macaulay Langstaff is currently the most prolific forward in England’s top five divisions after taking his goal tally up to 12 at the weekend in Notts County’s 3-1 win at York City.

The 25 year-old notched his fourth brace of the season against one of his former clubs in York on Saturday, and his total for the campaign so far is not even matched by... Erling Haaland.

It has taken just 10 National League games for Langstaff to reach his current amount...

Langstaff’s two goals at York ensured Luke Williams’s men kept within one win of the current top two in the fifth tier of Wrexham and Chesterfield...

Williams said: “I don’t know what to say, really; he is so ruthless around the goal. You look at the way he chased down the central defenders and the goalkeeper to force him to kick under pressure, then the next action, if we win a header, he is back onside.

'When you have that work rate and desire to go and help the team while scoring goals at will as he does, no one can argue with the position he has got himself into... It is an amazing return, but we have to be aware that there are a lot of guys out there who are helping him and aware of where he is and are trying to find him with crosses into feet or balls into the areas he wants to be'".

Also, Notts County report that "Frank Vincent has extended his loan at Aldershot Town until 8 January.

The midfielder has made five appearances for the Hampshire outfit after initially joining them in August and will now be with them until the new year."

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

The Derbyshire Times reports that "Chesterfield striker Michael Gyasi is set to be out for a few weeks with a shoulder injury.

The summer signing has made one start and three appearances so far this season. The 22-year-old was not included in the matchday squad against Maidstone United on Saturday.

Assistant manager Danny Webb said 'We had a practice game on Tuesday and he pulled his shoulder out of joint. It has gone back in but sadly I think he will be missing for three to four weeks.

'It was a really horrific tackle on him against Southend early on which once again went unpunished,” Webb said.

'He played at Yeovil and his knee gradually ballooned up so there was just too much fluid on it... we are hoping he will be back in training next week.'”

THE ALTY MANAGERIAL VIEW

Following Altrincham's first win of the season, assistant manager Neil Sorvel told the NLPaper, "It's not always easy against ten men. Things were getting very nervy. Their keeper was saving everything; he was having a blinder. So, I'm relieved we got there in the end.

"We've not been good enough at both ends of the pitch in recent weeks so it's pleasing to put in a solid defensive display. It's mad, they scored five from seven shots last week".

The views of manager Phil Parkinson are to be heard in a post-match audio interview on the Altrincham FC website.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

Devon Live reports on Torquay's 6-0 hammering by Wrexham.

"Judge us after 10 games was the message from Torquay United manager Gary Johnson after the new team made a poor start to the season last month. Well, we are now at 10 games, and Torquay are bottom of the National League.

No one was expecting an easy day at Wrexham on Saturday, with Hollywood cash bankrolling their season and the Welsh team second in the table, but the 6-0 loss at the Racecourse Ground was the latest blow in a series...

And Johnson may well be wishing he hadn’t mentioned 10 games - and hoping he is given the time to turn it around. Torquay owner Clarke Osboure and general manager George Edwards keep their thoughts very much to themselves and refusing interviews is the norm at the football club right now...

'I thought we were as good as them early on, especially in the first half from box to box, but they’ve got that quality on both boxes to be fair,' said Johnson.'I was pleased we tried to play some football, and we got some combinations going, and we had some attacks, but we weren’t anywhere near as clinical as they were'...

Torquay did start well, but as the goals mounted up there was really only one side in it...

At least Torquay have, on paper, an easier game this Saturday when Scunthorpe United, who have also only picked up eight points, come to Plainmoor...

Pre-kick off at the Racecourse Ground, news came out that striker Corie Andrews has knee ligament damage and needs an operation. He could be out for six weeks.

'Don’t let this game spoil our season,' said Johnson... 'We have three home games I think in the next four games...

'We have lost three points to Wrexham at this minute... but we have got to show we are improving against the next four teams...

After Scunthorpe, [Torquay play] Maidenhead United at home on Tuesday night, York City away on Saturday, October 8, and Altrincham at home on the 22nd, following a break for the FA Cup."

In the Oldham Times we learn that "David Unsworth has promised hard work on the training ground to ensure Oldham Athletic are no longer a soft touch, after his first game in charge ended in a 3-0 defeat at Bromley.

Latics trailed 2-0 at the break after conceding twice in the space of six minutes... Oldham were their own worst enemy as, having failed to pose too stern a test at one end, they showed their vulnerability at the other, and when they did not clear their lines Omar Sowunmi swooped to score from close range.

Reece Hannam then doubled Bromley's lead as he got on the end of Jude Arthur's cross and finished from a tight angle.

Bromley completed back-to-back 3-0 home wins when Mike Fondop turned a 59th minute corner into his own net.

'It was a disappointing result. They've not really had to work hard for the goals and that, just speaking to the players, has been the problem away from home this season,' said Unsworth...

'We must rectify, not the mistakes for the goals but just team shape for the goals. It was too easy. We don't want to be a soft touch conceding from set pieces... but in fairness to the players they kept going...

'But when you lose 3-0 and your two best players are your centre backs, who played really well, it shows you just how big a job it is'".

ALTRINCHAM 1-0 ALDERSHOT TOWN

Above: Alty players walk back to their own half after Ryan Colclough had converted the match's winning penalty. The images shows, left to right: Lundstram, Eddy Jones, Colclough, Conn-Clarke, Osborne, Barrows and Dinanga.

Altrincham finally won their first match of the season against an Aldershot Town side which paid the price for three rash challenges in a game low on quality.

Match report here.

BYRON'S RETURN

The return to Altrincham of striker Byron Harrison was not just a surprise to Alty supporters but it was also a strange case of a Robins' player with eight previous appearances for the club under his belt, who had never been seen in action previously by his club's supporters.

His previous spell at Altrincham had been during the long sequence of games played behind closed doors in 2020-21 season.

On his first arrival at the club in December, 2020, Harrison (35) had, as now, been signed on a short-term contract. His previous club had been Barrow, a club that he had left at the end of 2019-20 season.

The 6ft 3inch forward started out in Hampshire at Havant & Waterlooville (2005) and also played for a variety of other southern clubs including Worthing in West Sussex, Boreham Wood in Hertfordshire, Harrow Borough in Middlesex, Ashford Town in Kent and Carshalton in Surrey.

In 2011 he returned to Hertfordshire and joined Stevenage Borough, playing there in League One, before dropping to League Two with AFC Wimbledon, where he stayed for two seasons before joining Cheltenham Town and then Chesterfield. A second stint at Stevenage, this time on loan, preceded his release by Chesterfield in 2016.

For 2016-17 he joined Barrow where he had his most prolific spell, scoring 27 times in 56 appearances. Next, he returned to the south of England, on loan to Sutton United.

For 2018/19 he signed for Barnet where he netted only twice in that season and was released. A return to Barrow followed for a season (2019/20) in which 24 of his 29 appearances came from the bench and he did not score, before being released.

Because of injury, it was more than a month after arriving at Alty that Byron made his club debut, as a substitute, at Sutton on 9 January 2021. He went on to make seven starts (and one appearance from the bench), without finding the net, before his departure was announced on 15 March 2021.

In May 2021 he joined Connah's Quay Nomads, where he was a team-mate of goalkeeper Ollie Byrne, until he left at the end of the 2021–22 campiagn.

NEXT GAME: NOTTS COUNTY (A)

Altrincham's next match is away at Notts County, whose game yesterday was at York City, which the Magpies won 3-1.

After the game, the York Press announced that the Minstermen's manager "John Askey has insisted that Notts County are 'the best footballing team' in the Vanarama National League...

Quevin Castro’s wonder-goal free-kick and a brace from Macaulay Langstaff rendered Fraser Kerr’s maiden City goal a consolation.

It was a first loss in six for City, who had won three and drawn two of their previous five games. When asked if County were as good as it gets in the National League, City boss Askey replied 'I think so. They’re the best footballing team, by far.

'There’s one or two, like Chesterfield and Wrexham, those three are probably on a different level than most... Hopefully, when we don’t play the bigger teams, then we pick up the points that we need to try and get into the play-offs'...

Both of Langstaff’s goals could have been dealt with better by City...

'I think when you play them, they’re always going to have more of the ball. What was disappointing was the goals we conceded,' reflected Askey...

The City manager continued 'It’s disappointing as much as anything that we haven’t played (well)... A lot of the time we were getting offside when there was no need to'"

ALTY OLD BOYS

Phil Jordan reports on Alty old boys who were in action or in the news this weekend. Kevin Ellison has been deemed "surplus to requirements" by acting Warrington Rylands boss, and another Alty old boy, Jody Banim. Ellison has now signed for City of Liverpool FC. Meanwhile, Callum Dolan scored a hat-trick, including a penalty, as Rylands twice came from behind to win 2-5 at Liversedge.

On Saturday, Luca Havern scored Bradford (Park Avenue)'s goal in a 3-1 defeat at AFC Fylde.

Josh Hancock gave Curzon Ashton the lead but they were held 1-1 at home by King's Lynn Town. In the wake of the management sacking at Spennymoor Town, Jude Oyibo has also left the Durham club and he has joined Radcliffe FC for whom he scored the opening goal in a 3-1 win against Morpeth.

Yusifu Ceesay scored Kidderminster Harriers' opening goal in a 3-0 win at Kettering.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

Boreham Wood "announce the arrival of midfielder George Broadbent... on a short-term loan from Championship outfit Sheffield United.

George arrived at Bramall Lane in July 2017 after playing in the youth Academy at Manchester United... George has enjoyed 3 loan spells away from Bramall Lane, with Curzon Ashton in the National League North in 2020 followed by a period with then-Juliper Pro League [Belgian] outfit Beerschot in 2021, before making 27 appearances for then-League One side Rochdale during the 2021/22 season.

Gaffer Luke Garrard had this to say... 'He is someone we have monitored, and we were very pleased to beat off competition for his signature. He will bring much needed competition in a position we are currently light in. He’s a very mobile and dynamic midfielder with real technical ability'...

George joins up with fellow-Blades loanee Zak Brunt in the centre of the park".

24 September 2022

ALTRINCHAM 1-0 ALDERSHOT TOWN

Altrincham finally won their first match of the season against an Aldershot Town side which paid the price for three rash challenges in a game low on quality.

Two of those ill-judged challenges came from Tom Whelan and the latter of these saw him dismissed in first-half added time when he picked up his second yellow card for a foul on Colclough. The third incident was a trip on Osborne when he was going nowehere on the far left of the box and that gave Altrincham a penalty which Colclough converted cleanly in the 76th minute.

Alty were the more enterprising team throughout but lacked the guile to creat any clear opportunities. Byrne in the home goal was hardly troubled all afternoon though he will have been grateful to see a first-half Glover header go narrowly wide with him beaten.

There was a big surprise before kick-off with striker Byron Harrison (right) returning to Moss Lane after a brief stay in 2020-21. The win lifted Alty off the bottom on goal difference, thanks to a 6-0 thrashing for Torquay United.

Report to follow...

NEXT GAME: ALDERSHOT TOWN

Altrincham welcome Aldershot Town to the J. Davidson Stadium today (Saturday).

Aldershot Town report that "Following The Shots emphatic victory over Halifax, Aldershot are back on the road for a trip to Altrincham. The Robins are currently bottom of the National League after a winless start to the season, with Shots looking to improve on the 5-1 victory last Saturday.

Altrincham finished 14th last campaign... 12 points ahead [of] the Shots...

Shots and Altrincham met in December and shared the spoils at the EBB, with Alfy Whittingham and Mohamed Sylla putting Aldershot 2-0 up, before Toby Mullarkey and Ryan Colclough pulled the game level to give both sides a point. Shots were less fortunate when the sides met again, losing 1-0 to a Dan Mooney 87th minute winner at the J. Davidson Stadium...

The tie this weekend will be Parkinson’s 98th game in charge of the side [presumably just in the National League]. Parkinson previously managed Nantwich Town between February 2015 and April 2017, eventually leaving his role to join Altrincham.

Altrincham endured a mass turnover last summer... Of the new signings, Josh Lundstram from Crewe Alexandra has made the most appearances, playing in all nine of the opening fixtures. James Jones has the next most appearances, with eight and Lewis Baines has made six. New pair Jake Cooper and Jordan Hulme have both made five.

Of the squad from last season, Elliot Osborne, Toby Mullarkey, Ryan Colclough and Marcus Dinanga have all played in all of the opening fixtures, meaning they can be expected to feature tomorrow".

Before the match, Aldershot Town confirmed that "Michael Klass and Ryan Hall have both left on month-long loan deals.

Klass moves to Lewes to join fellow summer signing Marcel Elva-Fountaine having spent last season with the Isthmian Premier League side.

Ryan Hall moves to Southern League Premier South side Hayes and Yeading United... having spent the beginning of this season as [goalkeeper] Luca Ashby-Hammond's understudy".

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

The National League "has been in discussions with BT Sport on the timing restriction on Clubs placing their highlights online and the difficulties this can cause some Clubs.

Yesterday BT Sport confirmed they are in agreement for the restriction to be amended so that Clubs can upload their highlights immediately following the BT Sport National League highlights show, rather than the current restriction.

Whilst the timing of the BT Sport highlights show may vary; they are typically scheduled at 10pm, finishing at 10.30pm, with this being the case for the forthcoming weeks.

Should there not be a weekend highlights show, highlights cannot be uploaded until after the blackout in accordance with Article 48.

In relation to midweek highlights, these can be shown immediately following the completion of the game.

This amendment is effective immediately and the League are grateful to BT Sport for this concession".

The BBC reports on Macaulay Langstaff, "The only player in England's professional leagues who has managed to keep up with the Norwegian in the scoring charts...

'I know it's just a bit of fun, but it was a pleasure to see my name on the goalscoring charts for the top five leagues and see him top and me level with him with 10 before Saturday,' Langstaff told BBC Sport... 'Just to be mentioned in the same sentence as a name like that is brilliant'...

It was last term's 32-goal haul for Gateshead in National League North that made the Teessider, who was playing for £40 appearance fees seven years ago in the 10th tier, one of the most sought after players in non-league.

Notts head coach Luke Williams was appointed just as Notts were about sign off on deals for Langstaff and Cedwyn Scott, his 26-goal strike partner at Gateshead... After overcoming Covid at the start of the season, former Dundee forward Scott has now scored four goals in his past five games and says he will keep 'chipping away' to catch up to and 'drive on' Langstaff...

Langstaff said [of Haaland], 'I go home and try to recreate what he does on the pitch. I take a lot of things he does, little tips, his movement in the box is unbelievable. He scores a lot of tap-ins and I watch to try take as much of his game into my game as I can'''.

'We know that the levels are far apart, but the attitude and the ideas of the two guys are very similar,' [manager] Williams said..

'I ended up signing my first professional deal with Gateshead [in February 2017]' said Macauley. A loan spell with Blyth Spartans, then a transfer to York City followed before a second spell with Gateshead resulted in a move to Meadow Lane and a Notts side trying to return to the English Football League after a four-year absence".

PARKINSON PONDERS

In the Sale & Altrincham Messenger, press and media officer John Edwards writes that "Phil Parkinson remained defiant after a 4-1 defeat at Dagenham and Redbridge piled the pressure on him...

The Robins are now bottom of the National League table... as they look to break their duck at the 10th attempt at home to Aldershot Town on Saturday..

Said the Alty boss (right), 'We created some brilliant moments but weren’t clinical enough in either box. We know what the problems are... I can’t defend people today. There are a number of players who should have scored one or two goals, but, equally, you can’t concede four and hope to get anything out of it. There are a few who are below par, and it is really uncomfortable at the moment.

'I know I’m clinging on for dear life, because a manager’s job is all about results. The board have been superb with me, but I’m under no illusions that we need to start winning to stay in the job. But I believe in this group of players, and the performances have not been far away...

'My biggest job now is to make the players aware of what they need to do better while still keeping them positive, but I’m completely confident we can turn the corner and make it work within this full-time model. The fans have got to buy into it as well. I know it’s difficult when we are losing, but we really need the fans to be on board, along with everyone else connected with the club'".

NEXT GAME: ALDERSHOT TOWN

Aldershot Town, who visit Altrincham on Saturday, is one of the newer clubs in the National League, having only been going for thirty years. The club was founded amidst the ashes of the historical Aldershot side which hit the buffers in 1992 and had its Division Four record for that season expunged.

From 1992, Aldershot Town worked its way through the Isthmian League to reach Conference level in 2003 from where, after five seasons, they returned to the Football League. Five seasons followed in EFL2 before The Shots found themselves back in non-League in 2013. In the subsequent nine seasons, there have been seven finishes at fifteenth or lower in the division. However, in both 2016/17 and 2017/18 they ended in fifth place.

But last season they finished 20th with the three clubs beneath them all being relegated, albeit the Shots had a nine-point buffer.

The Shots' line up for last Saturday's 5-1 thrashing of FC Halifax Town was 1. Luca Ashby-Hammond, 2. Archie Davies, 3. Ollie Harfield, 5. Tyler Cordner, 7. Justin Amaluzor, 8. Frank Vincent, 9. Inih Effiong, 11. Harrison Panayiotou, 15. Tom Whelan, 22. Giles Phillips (c), 23. Ryan Glover. Subs not used: 13. Ryan Hall, 16. Corey Jordan, 17. Faysal Bettache, 18. Ody Alfa, 27. Tommy Willard ,

There has been a lot of upheaval in both teams' squads since their last encounter at Moss Lane in March 2022.

Right: Zak Goodson

Aldershot have just three starters from that March visit (Harry Panayiotou, Ryan Glover and Giles Phillips), who also started last Saturday's game at the Recreation Ground (EBB Stadium), though Tommy Willard had been on the bench last season at Moss Lane and Corey Jordan was on the bench in both the games in question.

Whilst many of the Aldershot faces this Saturday may therefore be new to Altrincham supporters, so too will many Alty players be unfamiliar to travelling fans from Aldershot as Toby Mullarkey, Elliot Osborne, and Ryan Colclough are the only home players who started the March 2022 game who could possibly start this Saturday's contest.

Two other Alty players (Ben Pringle and Jake Cooper) were on the bench for the game last season and could be involved this Saturday as well.

For this Saturday's game, Alty will be without three of their loanees, who have been called up for international duty for their respective age groups. Dermot Mee (Northern Ireland) and Wales duo Aaron Bennett and Dan Malone are the players unavailable for selection this week.

Alty have a number of recent signings and loanees who have yet to make a home start, namely forwards Zak Goodson [above, right], Egli Kaja and Alex Sami. However, Kaja seems to be carrying an injury and Sami has played just 14 minutes from the bench this season and has not even been in the matchday squad for the last five fixtures.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

The Southend Echo reports that "Sections of Southend United backroom staff are limiting their work this week due to late payment of their wages for August.

Blues’ players and coaching staff have received their pay packets.

But those behind the scenes are still waiting to be paid, three weeks after their scheduled pay day.

Echosport understands frustrated staff, who have regularly been paid late, worked Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Wrexham at Roots Hall.

One disgruntled worker also told the Echo they had not been paid on time for six months".

Later, the Southend Echo added that "Southend United say staff have been paid late due to a 'slight delay in the building programme at Boots & Laces'...

The club insist most staff members have now been paid while others have taken a 'wage deferral' to help the club.

The club statement said 'There have been a few bumps in the road on our journey to financial sustainability at Fossett’s Farm. The latest problem that has arisen is a short term cashflow issue caused by a slight delay in the building programme at Boots & Laces.

'In short, as a consequence of the delay, it will be a couple of months before some of the enhanced land value (created by the planning permission that has been obtained) can be released to help fund the club. Bridging finance has been agreed, but has not yet been received and, in the intervening period, it is correct that some staff were paid late, for which we have apologised'".

The Maidenhead Advertiser reports that "A solid defensive base is the hallmark of an Alan Devonshire side, and those traits were once again on display in Saturday’s narrow, but just about deserved, 1-0 win over Woking.

They didn’t deserve to win because they carried the greater offensive threat, had more shots on goal, or dominated possession. They deserved it because they rolled their sleeves up after going five games without a victory and steadfastly refused to be beaten...

A forward line that haven’t played many minutes together began to show signs of a developing understanding. The home side created just one or two good chances across the course of the 95 minutes, but... they were ruthless and clinical.

Koby Arthur picked up the ball in the centre of Woking’s half in the 75th minute, slipped the ball wide on the left for Ashley Nathaniel-George, whose low cross was tracked by Emile Acquah for a tap in at the back post... United's goal seemed to knock the stuffing from Woking and their challenge in the final 20 minutes collapsed, well, like a pack of Cards.

This was a victory built on resolute defence and tigerish play from the likes of Ryan Upward and Kane Ferdinand in midfield....

'Notts County and Southend are the only games where we’ve looked vulnerable,' said assistant boss Ryan Peters. 'Other than that... we’ve had a solid base. That’s an Alan Devonshire team... Now we need to keep that solid base while adding a few more chances to score a few more goals'...

Maidenhead came into Saturday’s game off the back of a deflating run of five matches without a win, with only one goal scored in the process...

'We’re looking at small wins, but we’re one of only two part-time teams [with Wealdstone] in this league, it’s going to be tough,' added Peters...'But the gaffer has a team that goes out there and puts their shirt on the line every single time, and they will carry on doing so'...

Said Peters... 'This is a place where no one wants to come, and we want to keep it that way.'”

NEXT: ALDERSHOT TOWN

Saturday will be the eighth time that Aldershot Town have visited Altrincham. In the seven previous clashes at Moss Lane, Altrincham have won four times, drawn once and lost twice.

The first occasion that the sides met was on 28 January 2006 in a game in which Alty completed their first double of that season with their biggest win of the campaign against an Aldershot Town side which had started well but had fallen behind to a superb 25-yard shot from James Robinson (8 mins).

Ironically the points earned in this game by the Robins were to be expunged at the end of the season when Altrincham were judged not to have obtained international clearance for Robinson, who had arrived from Accrington Stanley with the assumption being that Stanley had obtained his clearance previously.

Playing Robinson was to cost Alty a deduction of 18 points in total.

In the 2006 game, Darren Barnard equalised from the penalty spot after Band had been harshly judged to have pushed over Holloway. Referee Lewis issued then five cautions in ten minutes before half-time. But in that same period Alty scored twice more. Firstly, Thornley lashed home a shot from the right (41 mins) and then, in the fourth minute of added time, Robinson scored his second when he expertly curled a freekick into Bull's top corner from just outside the box to make it 3-1.

The second half was a slightly quieter affair but Alty were rarely threatened by their visitors. Alty went 4-1 up after 78 minutes when Rose, who had just come on, and Robinson combined to set up Thornley at the back post. Colin Little added a fifth two minutes later when he got the ball off Barnard on the half way line and, despite retreating defenders, kept his head to score well (80 mins). After the previous week's 5-0 mauling at Forest Green, this was the perfect response from Altrincham.

Right: Stuart Coburn was clearly delighted with the result in 2006.

Both teams were much changed since the reverse fixture in August 2005. Since then, from the Alty starting line-up, Steve Hawes and Gary Williams had left the club, Gary Talbot was out injured and Colin Potts was suspended. Also three of the bench that day, James Olsen, George Melling and Nehru McKenzie had left the club. As Alty again selected no keeper on the bench, Richard Acton was not involved. This left only Coburn, Band, Adams, Owen and Little as the Alty players to start both games against The Shots this season.

ALTRINCHAM: 1. Stuart COBURN; 11. Gary SCOTT, 4. Mark MADDOX (capt), 15. Peter BAND, 3. Chris ADAMS; 37. Ged MURPHY, 8. Val OWEN, 2. Steve ASPINALL, 19. James ROBINSON; 9. Colin LITTLE, 10. Rod THORNLEY. Subs: 14. Lewis CHALMERS, 20. Kieran LUGSDEN, 21.Stephen ROSE, 26. Lee HENDLEY, 28. Pat McFADDEN.

ALDERSHOT TOWN: 1. Nikki BULL; 26. Matt SOMNER, 3. Darren BARNARD, 24. Gary ELPHICK, 4. Greg HEALD, 8. Steve WATSON (capt)., 17. Ryan SCOTT, 11. Gary HOLLOWAY, 20. Nick CRITTENDEN, 28. ALTY YOUTH REPORTS

Altrincham FC has Sam Chambers's report "on a 2-1 win for Altrincham under-18s against Colne".

After Colne had taken the lead, Altrincham missed a penalty. In the second half Joel Bailey equalised before Chambers scored a winner for the Robins.

Squad: Junior Bopda, Ben Atkinson, Sam Murphy, Charlie Behan, Kareem Majzoub, Sheriff Njie, Lucas Aldcoft, Mike Comber, Sam Chambers, JJ Kelly, Adam Lynch, Joel Bailey, Sammy Bonney-Phillips, Ian Vasconcelos Jose, Loui Williams, Charles Okpe.

And "Tom Higgins reports on a 5-1 defeat for Altrincham under-17s against Curzon Ashton under-18s... in their second league game of the season".

Having conceded four times, Alty earned a penalty "which was slotted away in the bottom right corner by Alfa making it 4-1", before the Nash scored a fifth goal.

Squad: Noah Tyson, Tom Higgins, Ollie Fiedor, Alfa Balde, Lincoln Goddard, Mike Smith, Niya Richards-Gray, Matty MacFarlane, Harrison Turner, Will Spencer, Peter Arogun, Dylan Evans, George Raftery, Ollie Dixon, Harrison McCarthy, Sam Taylor.

GIRLS' ACADEMY AT ALTY

Altrincham FC announce that the club has "taken a significant step towards further developing an already-successful women’s section by sanctioning the creation of an Academy for girls next year.

The new Academy will be launched next September, and... the aim is to provide a pathway to the senior squad for youngsters in the area...

'We already have 20 girls’ teams in the club’s junior section,' said Alty director Cathal Morrison. 'The women’s section, in general, is going from strength to strength, and this is the perfect opportunity to keep building the pathway between junior and senior football for girls in and around the area.'

The scheme is being launched in partnership with Trafford College, and any girls currently in year 11 at school are eligible to apply for trials".

WIN FOR UNDER-16S

From Altrincham FC comes a report by Henry Murphy on the Under-16s' 2-1 win over Egerton under-17s. which was "their second North West Youth Alliance Development Division match of the season".

Following a foul by Harry O’Gara, Egerton not only converted the resulting penalty but O'Gara injured himself and to be replaced, before James O’Gara put an Alty penalty wide. However, he did equalize before the interval.

In the closing stages, Charlie Jarrald netted a winner for Altrincham before James O’Gara was issued with a red card.

Alty squad: 1. Louie Fallon, 2. Teddy Woolland, 3. Oscar Cooper, 4. Lewis Lambkin, 5. Harry O’Gara, 6. Ben Taylor, 7. Afernee Denise, 8. Henry Murphy, 9. James O’Gara, 10. Kian Gonzalez, 11. Harrison Howells, 12. Corey Ferry, 14. Henry Shaw, 15. Mo Elnagi, 16. Charley Jarrald, 17. Jack Chandler

ALTY OLD BOYS

Ritchie Sutton (right), who left Altrincham last summer, has been named the new manager of Nantwich Town. Central defender Ritchie was at Alty from 2020 to 2022 but spent substantial time on loan at Alfreton Town.

In all, he made 16(+2) appearances for Altrincham and scored twice.

TONY'S EXEMPLARY FUNDRAISING

Altrincham FC reports that Alty supporter "Tony Collier was diagnosed with stage 4 advanced prostate cancer in 2017 and was told he may only have two years to live.

However, five years on and his cancer has been brought down to complete stability. He believes on top of his tremendous response to treatment, a lot is thanks to his passion for exercise, which includes him running 5k everyday to help raise money for charity.

Tony will now also join hundreds of football fans on the Greater Manchester ‘Football March’, which will start here at Alty FC and finish at the home of Manchester City tomorrow!...

Tony explained... saying 'Fundraising events like this are important because it will help develop new drugs that will buy me more time to spend with my grandkids when my current treatment stops working.'

The 65 year-old has previously raised around £40,000 for prostate cancer UK and took part in a similar event last year known as ‘Jeff Stelling’s March for Men’...

'It’s 26 miles, it’s quite a challenge but it tends to go at a very steady pace (3mph)'...

After attending his first game at Alty in 1966, Tony... [says] 'Football is a means of escapism to get away from the day-to-day horrors of living with incurable cancer'...

If you wish to join Tony on the walk to help beat prostate cancer along with hundreds of others you can sign up here.

A minimum target of £350 is recommended, however, there are prizes to be won for those who go above and beyond...

Additionally, Tony is currently undergoing a yearlong fundraiser, running 5k every day. If you wish to donate to his just giving you can do so by clicking the link here.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

The Liverpool Echo confirms that "Former Everton player and coach David Unsworth has been appointed in his first senior managerial role at Oldham Athletic. The 48-year-old has signed a three-year deal...

Unsworth, who departed his dual role as Everton’s Academy Director and Under-23s manager in April to pursue his managerial ambitions, will bring two former Blues with him in the shape of John Ebbrell and Francis Jeffers as assistant manager and first team coach respectively. Only last week it was revealed that Ebbrell was moving to a new role of Player Development Senior Coach at Everton...

Unsworth... turned down the chance to take charge of Oxford United in February 2018".

The Grimsby Telegraph reports that "Upon reflection of Scunthorpe United’s 1-1 home draw with York City at the weekend, interim manager Tony Daws believes the players showed a 'never say die' attitude...

Rob Apter’s first goal for the club in the 88th minute helped Scunthorpe snatch a point after Lenell John-Lewis had put the visitors ahead... The Iron have now had back-to-back draws under the interim charge of Daws, which connotes small signs of improvement off the back of six consecutive defeats...

'I thought it was thoroughly deserved,' said Daws. 'The boys are disappointed that it isn't three points as we thought we had done enough to win. I am so proud of the lads... that never say die attitude...

'It was all about us, and the penalty kind of killed us; we still picked it up and kept going... We picked up the momentum again in the second half, and I thought we were all over them'".

In the Southend Echo, "United midfielder Noor Husin is determined to bounce back from a ‘slow start’ to the season.

Husin returned...for Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Wrexham having missed the previous six games with a knee problem...

Said Husin... 'The injury happened in the Solihull game... The scan showed it was an MCL grade one'...

The midfielder believes it will take a few more matches until he is back to his best'...

The Shrimpers were on top for the majority of the match against the high-flying Welshmen...

'I thought we played very well and were in control of the game,' said Husin. 'It was very frustrating with the disallowed goal. That’s cost us two points and I still don’t know why it was ruled out'".

NEXT: ALDERSHOT TOWN

Aldershot Town will arrive at the JDS on Saturday fresh from a 5-1 win over FC Halifax Town.

Last season they visited Altrincham on Non-League Day and the date also coincided with The Shots' nominated "away day" match for 2021/22. Once again, in 2022/23, they arrive on an international weekend when there are no Premier League or Championship fixtures, a factor which should help to boost the attendance at Moss Lane.

Back on 26 March 2022 for that last clash, Altrincham won 1-0, recording their fifth shut-out in six outings in the National League. A late, deflected goal by Mooney won an uninspiring match.

Having shown little ambition throughout, Aldershot began to get forward a little more in the last quarter of the game but neither side had the guile to break the deadlock until a deflected shot by Mooney, off Lokko, found the net (87 mins).

Altrincham were again without Jordan Hulme (following concussion), Eddy Jones (with Wales U-21s) and Tom Hannigan (injured). This time around, only Mullarkey, Osborne and Colclough remain available this Saturday from the 2021 starting eleven.

ALTRINCHAM: 1. Tony Thompson (c), 23. Harry Perritt, 25. Toby Mullarkey, 24. Kyle Ferguson, 20. Andy White, 8. Elliot Osborne, 32. Isaac Marriott, 7. Dan Mooney, 10. Josh Hancock, 15. Matty Kosylo, 11. Ryan Colclough. Subs: 6. Jake Moult, 17. Ben Pringle, 26. Kole Hall, 27. A-Jay Leitch-Smith, 14. Jake Cooper.

ALDERSHOT TOWN: 24 Ethan Ross, 3. Lewis Kinsella (c), 5. Kevin Lokko, 6. Kodi Lyons-Foster, 7 Alfy Whittingham, 11 Harry Panayiotou, 14. Ryan Glover, 18 Mo Sylla, 22 Giles Phillips, 26 Alfie Saunders, 27 Tommy Willard. Subs: 1 Mitch Walker, 9. Mo Bettamer, 12. Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain, 16 Corey Jordan, 23. Jayden Harris.

ALTY OLD BOYS

From Phil Jordan we learn that, last night, Callum Dolan finished off Marske United with a penalty, as they lost 3-0 to Warrington Rylands.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

Oldham Athletic "announce the appointment of David Unsworth as the club’s new first-team manager.

Arriving at Boundary Park on a three-year contract, the 48-year-old joins Latics having spent eight years at Everton, where his work in charge of the U23s team has seen him establish a magnificent pedigree as a highly-respected, modern coach.

The former defender... also stepped in to manage the Everton first team on an interim basis in 2016 and 2017...

Unsworth said 'This is the perfect job for me... I’ve had opportunities to become a first-team manager at a number of clubs over the past three of four years but they haven’t felt quite right. This is the right club, the right fit, with the right owners and board of directors.

'The fanbase has also been a very important factor in my decision to join... I genuinely think this club is a sleeping giant, one that can climb up not just one league, but two or three, in a short space of time.'..

He began coaching at Bramall Lane before joining the staff at Preston North End, where he also managed the first-team in an interim capacity in December 2010 and 2011.

A return to Everton was next, becoming... manager in 2014. Over the next eight years, 25 academy players would be given first-team debuts".

According to the Nottingham Post "Notts County have already felt the impact of injuries to their first-team squad, with a number of key players side-lined already.

Ahead of the Magpies' win over Aldershot, both Sam Austin and Aden Baldwin missed out on the matchday squad altogether... And during that encounter with the Shots at Meadow Lane, defender Richard Brindley was forced off after a collision down by the touchline,... Another defensive absentee is that of Joel Taylor, who has not featured since... the second day of the season, with... a grade one tear...

When comparing to the squads around the league, Notts have one of the smallest squads with only 20 players ... Only Boreham Wood (19) and Woking (19) have smaller squads than the Magpies, with the teams around the summit of the table such as Chesterfield (25), Wrexham (27), and Solihull Moors (26) having much more options...

When comparing to last year, Notts had 29 players on their books which included loans and permanent signings during both transfer windows. But even with nine extra players compared to last year, they had the smallest squad in the National League alongside Halifax Town, with both finishing in the play-off positions...

Notts' squad depth looks to be a real weakness and that was highlighted for their trip to Dorking on Saturday. Only Kairo Mitchell and Ed Francis had played more than 180 minutes of football when looking at the players on the bench".

THE ALTY SQUAD REVIEWED

A feature of this season so far has been that Altrincham have yet to establish a consistent starting eleven. In the nine fixtures to date, 20 players have already started a National League game for the club and a further 5 have been named in matchday squads but not started a game.

The club's decision to go full-time and long-term injuries to a couple of players are major factors in this turnover of players.

Right: Toby Mullarkey is Altrincham's leading appearance maker.

Whilst 9 of the current Altrincham FC contracted players were also the club's employees last season, by the start of this season only 3 of those players had started more than the equivalent of a half-season of games during their careers with the club.

The 9 players in question were (with number of club appearances before this season in brackets) Ryan Colclough (62+8), Matt Gould (9), Marcus Dinanga (15+4), Brad Jackson (5+3), Matty Kosylo (62+8), Isaac Marriott (18+3), Toby Mullarkey (86+21), Elliot Osborne (22+1) and Ben Pringle (14+24).

Of these nine players, unfortunately two (Kosylo and Marriott) have been out of action all season so far through injury.

19 other members of the current squad were not contracted employees of Altrincham at the end of last season. These comprise:

  • 5 players who are loanees, two of whom, Eddy Jones (3 starts this season) and Chris Conn-Clarke (8+1 apps this season), are having a second spell at the club. The first-time loanees this season are Dermot Mee (4 starts), Aaron Bennett (6+2 apps this season) and Dan Malone (2 starts)
  • 2 Academy graduates who have been named in matchday squads this season but have yet to play; Amaar Hussain and Ryan Forde
  • 3 signings since summer 2022 who were previously loanees, either last season or earlier; Jake Cooper (3+2 apps this season), Jordan Hulme (4+1 apps) and Josh Lundstram (9 starts).
  • 1 other signing who joined the club for the second time this season; James Jones (8 starts this season). Jordan Hulme also signed for a second time having been a loanee last season.
  • 8 players were completely new signings for 2022/23. But these eight have made just sixteen starts collectively, as shown below...
    • Baines, Lewis (6 starts) [pictured, right]
    • Barrows, Ross (4)
    • Brockbank, Liam (3)
    • Byrne, Oliver (3)
    • Goodson, Zak (0+1)
    • Kaja, Egli (0+3)
    • Roxburgh, Aidan (0)
    • Sami, Alex (0+1)

Another characteristic of the playing staff is that no fewer then 8 of the current squad are players who have twice been signed by manager Phil Parkinson in his managerial career at Nantwich Town and Altrincham.

They are Jordan Hulme who has been signed three times for Altrincham by Phil Parkinson, (twice on contract and once on loan); James Jones (twice signed at Altrincham); Matty Kosylo and Toby Mullarkey (signed by the manager at both Nantwich Town and Altrincham); Josh Lundstram and Jake Cooper (signed as loanees, then re-signed as contracted players) and Chris Conn-Clarke and Eddy Jones (twice signed as loanees).

So it is a squad in which, despite losing seven experienced players last summer, the club has attempted to build an element of continuity through employing 15 players who were either at the club last season or are enjoying a second spell with the management. However, many of those who stayed from last season had made limited appearances in last season's campaign. Added to that, the eight new signings are averaging just two starts per player so have had a restricted impact on the team's peformances.

Hopefully, over time, a more consistent starting eleven will emerge as injuries subside, the new players settle in and those who remained from last season, but had limited game time, make stronger claims to start games. But with a fifth of the season already completed, time is limited for an upturn in fortunes.

ALTRINCHAM FC STATEMENT

With the club currently bottom of the Vanarama National League, Altrincham FC has issued a "Club Statement" as follows...

"On Sunday the Altrincham FC Board met and one of the key outcomes is we will be providing further support for the first team with a focus on the immediate future.

We are in our first season of full-time football after making the transition over the summer. The board are convinced that the move to full-time is mandatory if we are to continue to grow.

Last season we asked the fans to get behind the team and your response was incredible. You roared us on as we came from behind to take a point from the Woking game and that proved to be a major turning point in our season.

We are asking you all to do it again! To get behind Phil and the team for the Aldershot game on Saturday and to raise the roof as we look to secure our first win of the season.

Your support really does make a huge difference, and we know with you behind the lads we will prevail".

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

Devon Live reports on "A point gained but from a poor performance; that was Torquay United manager Gary Johnson's verdict after the 1-1 draw at Wealdstone that leaves the Gulls sitting just one place above the relegation zone. Torquay scored early in London, Ali Omar heading home a Kieron Evans cross in just the second minute...

But they also had to soak up a lot of pressure which, in the second half, saw Wealdstone get their equaliser, and go close on several occasions as Torquay once again were forced to defend for their lives.

With nine games gone... there is no need to panic yet, but it bears repeating, this is not how anyone expected Torquay's season to be shaping up.

Johnson said 'The way we played, it was a point gained, because I thought we lacked quite a lot today.. Some of the lads today looked like they had only just joined us.'

Torquay are missing someone like Tom Lapslie in midfield, a hard-working, no-nonsense player, currently out with a hamstring problem. Shaun Donnollan has had an ankle injury... Another experienced player, Dean Moxey, is also out...

Brett McGavin... was feeling ill in the morning, so dropped to the bench...

'What we did show, and what we always show, is how we defend the box,' said Johnson".

ALTY'S STARTER FOR TEN

Altrincham's match on Saturday at home to Aldershot Town will be the tenth time this season that they will start a game looking for a first win of the season. So far they have five draws to show for their efforts this season as well as four defeats.

Since a national division was created for non-League teams in 1979 Altrincham have never gone more than ten matches without a win from the start of a season. That unwanted record came in 2007-8 when the side finally won in game eleven at home to Droylsden.

Above: Colin Little receives his team-mates' congratulations after scoring Alty's second goal against Droylsden in 2007.

That season Alty had only won three points by the end of game ten, and all of those had come in away games. So, not a single point had been won at home in five matches before the success against Droylsden.

That season ended with Altrincham in a relegation spot but for the third successive season they were awarded a reprieve due to another club's mismanagement. In 2008 that repreive came after Halifax Town had hit the financial buffers.

CSC TIE

Altrincham FC announce that "A new date has been agreed for Altrincham's Cheshire Senior Cup first round meeting with Sandbach United.

The tie was originally earmarked for Tuesday, November 1st but had to be switched after Alty's Vanarama National League fixture with Wealdstone was rearranged for that date.

After consultation between the two clubs, Alty will now launch their latest CSC campaign at the Sandbach Community Football Centre on Tuesday, October 11th, with a 7.45pm kick-off.

Our opponents, who play in the North West Counties League Division One South, advise us that admission will be £5 for adults, £3 concessions and £1 under-16s."

NEXT GAME: ALDERSHOT TOWN

Altrincham welcome Aldershot Town to the J. Davidson Stadium next Saturday, with the hosts fresh from a 5-1 triumph over FC Halifax Town.

The clash with Aldershot pits the National League draw specialists, Altrincham (5 draws), against the only side in the Vanarama National League not to have drawn a game this season.

The Shots currently lie eighteenth, with nine points and Altrincham are bottom (24th) with just five points. Both sides have been involved in nine matches so far which average out as games featuring at least three goals per fixture, so a goalless draw is not an obvious outcome.

ALTY OLD BOYS AND LOANEES

Courtesy of Phil Jordan, we learn that Dan Mooney picked up a yellow card as Southend United fought out a goalless draw with Wrexham on Saturday.

A Callum Dolan penalty gave Warrington Rylands an early lead at Matlock but they were behind at half-time. Although Ryan Brooke equalised, they went on to lose 4-2.

Theo Bailey-Jones put Stalybridge Celtic ahead at Bower Fold but A-Jay Leitch-Smith equalised for the visitors, Nantwich Town, who went on to win 2-1.

Connor Kirby played the first 84 minutes of Buxton's 2-1 FA Cup victory over Alfreton Town before being replaced by Jake Moult.

Sefton Gonzales netted the clincher as Clitheroe shocked Spennymoor Town 2-0.

Tom Peers scored the second of three Curzon Ashton goals in the space of eight minutes either side of half-time. Connor Hampson's cross set up the third goal. The Nash held on to beat FCUM 3-2 at Broadhurst Park, despite a spirited late revival by the home side.

Elsewhere, Duncan Watmore was unable to help his Middlesbrough side secure three points against Rotherham United, whilst Tom Walker played for AFC Fylde in a 1-1 draw at home to Farsley Celtic.

Warrington Rylands' new interim manager is Jody Banim.

Other Alty old boys who were still playing this weekened included goalkeeper Tony McMillan who saw three goals from Darlington knock his Southport side out of the FA Cup in the Second Qualifying Round.

Also in the FA Cup, Josh Amis was a late sub but could not stop Hyde United knocking his club out of the competition, the Tameside club now having dismissed both Warrington clubs on the Road to Wembley.

Also out of the FA Cup are Macclesfield FC for whom James Berry played as the Silkmen lost to Colville. He had had better luck in midweek as he scored twice in the FA Trophy win over Tadcaster Albion.

Still on Alty's books, loanee Ryan Morton laid on Trafford's goal in a 1-1 draw with Kidsgrove Athletic at Shawe View in a league match.

There was a hat-trick for Ben Elliott, two goals for Dontai Gabidon and a goal for Luke Vayro as West Didsbury & Chorlton trounced Longridge Town 8-0 on Saturday.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

The Nottingham Post tells us that "Despite the victory over the Magpies, Dorking manager Marc White was still not happy with his side's performance...

In a game that was largely dominated by the Magpies, a hat-trick from James McShane including two goals in added time in the second half, ensured the victory for Wanderers at Meadowbank Park despite Cedwyn Scott levelling the score five minutes into the second half.

In what was a frustrating afternoon for Luke Williams's side, surprisingly it was White who was unimpressed with his side's showing that afternoon...

'Notts County have put out the same ten or eleven players for the last five games, we are the complete opposite,' said White. 'We have got a mix and match, and I don't think more than two or three of those players have played consecutive games this season. We have players returning from injury and I want the fans to understand that.

'I was not happy with the performance today but what I was happy with was the Wanderers' spirit, the fans' spirit, the players' spirit and it was fitting that McShane got his hat-trick... We had to make two early substitutions; we had players who were struggling to carry on'", he said.

STATISTICAL PICTURE

Whilst a 4-1 defeat at Dagenham looks like a pasting for Altrincham yesterday, the match statistics as reported by the Non-League Paper paint a different picture.

According to that source, Altrincham came out top on four measures:

  • Shots on target: Dagenham 5 Altrincham 6
  • Shots off target: Dagenham 8 Altrincham 9
  • Corners: Dagenham 5 Altrincham 8
  • Offside: Dagenham 0 Altrincham 5

But what those figures also say is that from 13 shots, Dagenham netted four times (just above 30% of the chances), whilst from 15 shots, Alty only scored once, a conversion rate of under 7%. Obviously that discrepancy could be due to a variety of factors in terms of defending and shooting by each side. In short, all that the statistics do confirm is that, despite the scoreline, Altrincham were not completely overrun by their hosts.

DAGENHAM AFTERMATH

Altrincham FC has manager Phil Parkinson's interview with Radio Robins' commentator Laurence Howarth, following the 4-1 defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge at Victoria Road.

DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE 4-1 ALTRINCHAM

Nine games played and there is still no win for Altrincham this season after they were on the end of a heavy defeat in east London on Saturday afternoon. They are now bottom of the National League after Scunthorpe earned a point against York City.

Accordingly, he will be unavailable for Alty's Vanarama National League fixture with Aldershot Town at The J.Davidson Stadium next Saturday... We look forward to welcoming you back from international duty".

NEXT OPPONENTS: ALDERSHOT TOWN

Altrincham's next opponents are Aldershot Town who say that, on Saturday evening, they "put on a performance to remember in front of the BT Sport cameras as they raced to a 5-1 victory over Halifax thanks to a double from Tyler Cordner and goals from Ryan Glover, Justin Amaluzor and Inih Effiong...

Aldershot took the lead! Breaking free of his marker, Tyler Cordner almost broke the net with a powerful header.

But the visitors drew level just over 10 minutes later. Another header, it was of course Dieseruvwe who managed to head home from close range to get his side back into the game.

The Shaymen weren’t back in the game for long, however. A neat move by Aldershot resulted in a deep Ollie Harfield cross meeting the head of The Shots secret goalscoring weapon Tyler Cordner who headed home his second of the match.

It didn’t take long for The Shots to impose themselves on the second-half. A fantastic ball forward from Archie Davies set Ryan Glover free and the midfielder showed plenty of composure with an emphatic finish into the top corner to give Aldershot a third.

Justin Amaluzor won the ball back just outside the area and launched a fantastic effort in off the post to give The Shots a fourth!...

Archie Davies set off on a mazy run beating multiple Halifax defenders only to be brought down as he entered the penalty area. Effiong stepped up and duly converted to make it five for The Shots!

Shots lineup: 1. Luca Ashby-Hammond, 2. Archie Davies, 3. Ollie Harfield, 5. Tyler Cordner, 7. Justin Amaluzor (18. Ody Alfa 86′), 8. Frank Vincent, 9. Inih Effiong, 11. Harrison Panayiotou (27. Tommy Willard 66′), 15. Tom Whelan, 22. Giles Phillips (c) (16. Corey Jordan 51′), 23. Ryan Glover. Subs not used: 13. Ryan Hall, 17. Faysal Bettache."

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

The Southend Echo reports that "Southend United boss Kevin Maher felt his side were ‘outstanding’ in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Wrexham at Roots Hall.

Blues produced a hard-working display against the high-flying Welshmen... [after] a disappointing midweek defeat at Chesterfield.

'It was outstanding to be fair,' said Maher...'We had some choice words after Tuesday night... But this was very good performance against a top team'...

Maher opted to recall the fit-again Nathan Ralph and Noor Husin while also selecting Jake Hyde in attack against his parent club...

'They all did really well,' said Maher... Hyde controversially saw a second-half strike ruled out for offside... Said Maher, 'We have to shut out the noise and the negativity around the place sometimes. Criticism is justified when you lose games'".

At Yeovil Town The Glovers "were held by league leaders Chesterfield in a thrilling 2-2 draw at Huish Park.

Gime Touré got the Glovers up and running with four minutes played, but were quickly pegged back by the visitors.

Town continued to stay on top, and deserved their goal through Josh Staunton, but were once again left to rue missed chances as Jez Uchegbulam stepped up late on to level the affair.

Chris Hargreaves opted for a change of system from Tuesday’s draw with Eastleigh, changing to a 5-3-2.

Grant Smith began in goal once again, with Ben Richards-Everton, Josh Staunton & Owen Bevan in front of him, whilst Chiori Johnson & Jamie Reckord started at wing back. The midfield three was Lawson D’Ath, Matt Worthington & Sam Pearson with Touré combining with Malachi Linton up front.

It was a frantic start to proceedings, with the Glovers striking ahead with just four minutes played... However, it took just three minutes for Chesterfield to strike back..

The Chesterfield goal did little to dishearten Town, who dominated the first half..

The second half saw Chesterfield grow into the game a little more, enjoying longer spells of possession, but it was the Glovers who looked the more threatening..

With ten to play, the game almost mirrored the opening stages, with goals for both sides in quick succession.

Staunton struck first for Yeovil... Yeovil celebrations were short lived, being pegged back just six minutes later through Uchegbulam".

According to York Press "Kingsley James has insisted that York City were “nowhere near” their best performance levels against Scunthorpe United.

York drew 1-1 with Scunthorpe away from home on Saturday, after Lenell John-Lewis’s penalty was cancelled out by Rob Apter’s deflected equaliser late in the game.

Scunthorpe, who were at the bottom of the Vanarama National League table ahead of their clash with newly-promoted City, were strong throughout the game and perhaps unfortunate to not have scored sooner...

First-team coach James [said], 'We haven’t played well today, we’re fortunate to come away with a point, but it’s a point away from home... We’re not turning up to a team at the bottom of the league who are really struggling in terms of quality of players, they’ve got very, very good players in the squad...

'Physically, we weren’t quite at it. But it just happens, it’s going to happen throughout the season...

Scunthorpe’s goal came after Apter’s shot deflected off of the debuting Gus Mafuta, who looked to block the United player’s effort on goal'".

STREAMING ON THE WAY FOR NATIONAL LEAGUE

The Vanarama National League has issued "an update on streaming following a meeting of the Board on 15th September. The current broadcast rights, which includes streaming, are currently held by our broadcast partner BT Sport.

We have been working closely with them over the past few months to secure an agreement whereby non televised matches could be streamed on a League platform, also respecting the need to comply with Article 48 restrictions.

BT Sport have been incredibly supportive in this vision, for which we are extremely grateful. Following Board approval, we will now be progressing matters to contractually cement that position.

After several months of considering the options and appropriate due diligence the Board were presented with a detailed report which, having received proposals from a number of potential partners including market leaders and which also included speaking with organisations who have successful experience in streaming, a series of recommendations were made.

The Board unanimously approved all recommendations and have tasked the Commercial Committee to immediately progress this work, finalise contractual arrangements and confirm timelines. The ambition is to have a fully functioning platform launch in the second half of the season.

This is an exciting project but would not be possible without the co-operation of BT Sport and the support of our key title sponsors Vanarama.

We are excited to move this forward promptly and will give regular updates as to the progress of the project".

The routinely excellent unofficial Gloverscast from Yeovil adds that "Article 48 is a UEFA regulation which prevents matches being televised in England and Scotland between 2.45pm and 5.15pm on a Saturday, which presumably means the new streaming service will only cover midweek, bank holiday fixtures and any rescheduled kick-off times...

In summary, the rules of UEFA, which governs European football, says that any football association can pick a two-and-a-half hour window when games can’t be televised in. In England, that is between 2.45pm-5.15pm on a Saturday".

BEFORE TODAY'S GAME: DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE

Altrincham play their fifth away game of the season today (Saturday) at Dagenham & Redbridge and they will be hoping to secure their first win in nine attempts this season.

Should they fail to do so it will be the equal-worst start to a national-level season for Alty since 2010-11 when the club went nine games without a win. Before that, in 2007/08, their first win only arrived in game eleven.

Dagenham & Redbridge started the season reasonably well, with two wins, two draws and two defeats in their first six matches. However, currently, they lie seventeenth after experiencing two thumping defeats, albeit to promotion contenders, in their most recent fixtures. They lost 4-1 at Wrexham and then 0-5 at home to Notts County, last time out.

DaggersTV "spoke with Steve Gritt this week, as the Assistant Manager previews Saturday's Vanarama National League fixture, as we take on Altrincham at home

Daggers Gaffer, Daryl McMahon is currently on a week's compassionate leave due to a member of his immediate family currently being unwell".

WEALDSTONE GAME RE-ARRANGED

Owing to the mourning period for Queen Elizabeth II, Altrincham's game at home to Wealdstone, scheduled for 10 September, was postponed, along with all other national football.

The match has now been rearranged to take place on Tuesday, 1 November.

The new date means that Altrincham will play at least four games in a fortnight but three of them are at home.

  • Sat. 29.10.22 A Wrexham 3pm
  • Tue. 1.11.22 H WEALDSTONE 7.45pm
  • Sat. 5.11.22 FA Cup First Round Proper, should Altrincham reach that stage
  • Tue. 8.11.22 H BARNET 7.45pm
  • Sat. 12.11.22 H YORK CITY 3pm

FA YOUTH CUP

Altrincham FC has announced that the club "will make their entrance into this season's FA Youth Cup with a testing tie... away to Chester [FC} in the Second Qualifying Round.

"Alty's long-standing rivals earned themselves a home tie with the Robins after scraping through a closely-fought first qualifying round fixture with Vauxhall Motors. The game was all-square at 2-2 after 90 minutes, but Chester's youngsters held their nerve to win the penalty shoot-out 4-1.

The second qualifying round games will be held during the week starting Monday, September 26th and will kick-off at 7pm, unless an alternative time is mutually agreed".

To date the fixture's date and time have not been established.

ALTY'S NEXT GUESTS STRENGTHEN

The next visitors to Moss Lane (on 24 September) are Aldershot Town, who will have a new, but familiar, face in their ranks as the Derbyshire Times tells us that Chesterfield's "Tom Whelan has joined Aldershot Town on a short-term loan.

The midfielder will be at the Shots for one month. He will link-up with manager Mark Molesley again, who he worked under at Weymouth.

The 26-year-old, who rejoined Chesterfield in February from Eastleigh, has made one substitute appearance this season, which was on the opening day against Dorking Wanderers".

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

At Wrexham, "Young goalkeeper Kai Calderbank-Park has signed a short-term contract to provide goalkeeping cover until January.

Calderbank-Park, 21, who has represented Australia Under-23s, has been on trial with the Club... The former Burnley academy graduate, who has also played for Curzon Ashton, Bury AFC, Hyde United and Connah’s Quay Nomads, will train with goalkeepers Mark Howard and Rory Watson...

Manager Phil Parkinson added 'Kai has been training with us a few weeks. Everyone knows we’ve had difficulties in the goalkeeping department with the injuries to Rob and Dibbs... We’ve been looking for an extra keeper because if one of the keepers go down before Rob and Dibbs return, we will have nobody to go on the bench'".

According to the Football Insider, "Ex-Everton academy boss Dave Unsworth is in advanced talks to be the new Oldham Athletic manager, sources have told Football Insider...

Unsworth is keen to take on the role and a full agreement could be in place within the coming days...

The Latics go into the game with Eastleigh 16th in the National League on a run of just one win in their last six games. Everton confirmed earlier this year (12 April) that Unsworth was leaving his role in the summer to pursue his ambitions of becoming a manager...

He also had two interim spells as manager of the first team where he won three of nine games. The former defender... also had two spells as a caretaker boss of Preston North End".

Managerless or not, Oldham Athletic "announce the signing of James Carragher on loan from Wigan Athletic.

The 19 year-old centre half, son of former Liverpool and England defender Jamie, arrives at Boundary Park on a deal until 1 January... Carragher was captain of the Wigan side which won the U18 Professional Development League two seasons ago...

Carragher made his first-team debut in the EFL Cup last season".

"After picking up two wins and a draw from their last three games, Woking... travel to Maidenhead United.

The Cards were excellent on Tuesday as they put in arguably their best performance of the season so far to dispatch Oldham Athletic 3-0 at the Laithwaite Community Stadium... It might have been more too...

The result leaves Woking eighth in the league table...

Manager Darren Sarll will be boosted by the return of wide-man Kyran Lofthouse for Saturday’s match, although he may have to settle for a place on the bench, following Johnson’s fine showing in mid-week. Reece Grego-Cox is also thought to be close to a return after missing Tuesday’s game with a slight hamstring injury. Defender Sid Nelson remains the only long-term absentee...

Maidenhead are in their sixth season in the National League and... they’ve bought in ten new players this summer, including former midfielder Adrian Clifton, who re-joins from Boreham Wood, defender and one-time Woking trialist Cole Kpekawa from Hemel Hempstead, as well as Dover Athletic pair Koby Arthur and Alexis Andre."

We learn from the Southend Echo that "Southend United boss Kevin Maher was pleased with the impact Marcus Dackers made on his debut.

Dackers hit the back of the net in the second half against Chesterfield having earlier helped to create Callum Powell’s equalising effort.

And Maher was happy with how the on loan Salford City striker performed... 'He was a great focal point to play over.... To be able to play into him was good. He’s good in the air but he’s good with his feet too'", he concluded

The Real EFL explains that "Scunthorpe United is owned by businessman Peter Swan...

He became chairman of Scunthorpe United during the 2013 pre-season, seeing off competition from Sheffield-based boxing promoter Dennis Hobson for the post. He sacked manager Brian Laws following the first-round FA Cup defeat to local rivals Grimsby Town. In 2015, he said of his takeover 'We picked up a club with no systems in place, it was run as a hobby and that is what we have cleared up'...

The club were later scheduled to move in to a new ground that Swan had promised to supporters. The new ground was due to be ready for the start of the 2016-2017 English football season. After delays and complications over the new stadium’s location, the club cancelled the plans....

On 31 March 2022 with the club 10 points adrift at the bottom of League Two... Swann announced his resignation as chairman with immediate effect. His family remain majority shareholders, but on 21 July 2022 he indicated that discussions over a sale were at an advanced stage...

The club is now facing serious financial issues and potential collapse if issues are not resolved immediately. Could we be about to see another Bury? Or will someone step in to save this historic club?"

BENNETT CALLED UP

Altrincham's midfield loanee from Preston North End, Aaron Bennett (left), "will miss Altrincham's next home game after being called up by Wales under-19s for their latest round of European Championship fixtures", according to Altrincham FC.

Bennett, who did not play last Tuesday, will be available for this Saturday's trip to Dagenham but will miss the home match against Aldershot Town on the following Saturday.

"Rob Edwards's Wales side face Hungary in the first of three European Championship qualifiers at Rhyl's Belle Vue Stadium on Wednesday, September 21st... They then take on the Republic of Ireland at Llanelian Road, Colwyn Bay on Saturday 24th (1pm) before rounding off the programme against Gibraltar at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground the following Tuesday, the 27th".

18 year-old Bennett arrived at Altrincham on a three-month loan from Preston North End, which was announced on 1 August 2022.

Aaron made his Alty debut on 6 August 2022 and was named Man of the Match against Maidstone United. To date he has made 6(+1) appearances for the Robins. He is joint leading scorer for the club with two goals, both netted away from home, at Boreham Wood and Solihull Moors.

NEXT GAME: DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE

Altrincham travel to face Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday.

The Daggers' side, which lost heavily on its last outing, comprised 1. Justham, 17. Zouma, 19. Ling, 12. Robinson, 11' Weston, 5. Grant, 8. Sagaf, 20. Vilhete, 24. Morias, 9. McCallum, 7. Walker. Subs: 6. Mussa, 13. Strizovic, 25. Phipps, 35. Lawson.

That squad illustrates a marked degree of continuity at Victoria Road when compared with the Daggers' line up when Alty visited last season. No fewer than seven of the same players who faced Alty last season also started their most recent fixture. The seven were Elliot Justham, Mo Sagaf, Mauro Vilhete, Matt Robinson, Myles Weston, Josh Walker and Paul McCallum, whilst an eighth player, Sam Lin, who also started on Tuesday was on the bench for the 2021 game.

In contrast, the Alty side has undergone a much greater change in personnel, largely due to the move to a full-time regime. The Robins' 16-man squad which won 3-2 at Dagenham last season included just three men who also started the Robins' match, last Tuesday against Scunthorpe United. That trio of players is Ryan Colclough, Toby Mullarkey and Marcus Dinaga.

The thirteen Alty men who were in the squad at Dagenham in 2021 but who did not feature last Tuesday against Scunthorpe, comprised eleven players who have since left the club, (Thompson, Senior, Hannigan, Fitzpatrick, Furman, Moult, Mooney, Densmore, Peers, Hancock and Leitch-Smith), whilst Ben Pringle and Matty Kosylo, who were also in the 2021 matchday squad, were not involved against Scunthorpe this week.

A familiar face in the Daggers' squad this season is Yoan Zouma (above, left) who made five appearances for Altrincham in 2019/20 season. He arrived at Altrincham on loan from Barrow, a move announced on 1 March 2021. Initially this was a one-month loan but on 3 April, 2021 it was confirmed that that the arrangement had been converted into a season-long loan.

Having completed his first three appearances for Altrincham, a hamstring injury forced Yoan off at half-time in his fourth game, but he had returned to fitness by early April, 2021. On 21 May it was announced that his loan was coming to an end.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

Both the clubs relegated to the Vanarama National League from League Two last season have now parted ways with their manager, as Oldham Athletic "confirm that, following discussions with manager and club legend John Sheridan, it has been agreed that the time is right for him to step aside.

Having had the chance to assess where the club is at and what changes are required, both the Board and John feel that someone else is needed to take on the major challenge of restoring the club’s fortunes on the field.

To allow him the send-off he deserves and to give fans the opportunity to show their appreciation, John has agreed to take charge for one last time at our home match with Eastleigh on Saturday.

We would place on record our thanks to John for his efforts. He came out of retirement in January because he felt a sense of duty to try and keep the club in the EFL.

However, despite his best efforts and the amazing backing of our fans, that attempt was ultimately unsuccessful. Following relegation, and with the club for sale amid uncertain times, John felt he could not turn his back and so agreed to remain in charge.

The completion of the Rothwell family takeover means that the club’s future has now been secured and with results so far not what everyone had been hoping for, John and the Club now feel that the time is right for both he and Latics to move on as we enter a new era.

It goes without saying that John leaves on very good terms and with nothing but the thanks and utmost respect from the Board and the club.

Shez will forever be a Latics legend and there will be discussions over a permanent tribute to his service at Boundary Park".

Maidstone United manager Hakan Hayrettin told Kent Online that "Maidstone are ready to prove people wrong after claiming they’ve been written off...

It’s been a solid start overall, with Maidstone taking 11 points from eight games, but it’s those 5-0 and 4-1 beatings by Wrexham and Gateshead respectively that stand out to rival clubs.

'Of course they’ve written us off,' said Hayrettin. 'Wouldn’t you? Five-nil at Wrexham; 4-1 at Gateshead? I would if I were them but I don’t because I don’t see that...

'I have a way of doing things and I’m not going to change... We know what we can do, we’re not out of our depth here by the way, no way,' said Hayrettin. 'If I get it right, we’ll be fine, and I will. Listen, I said at the start of the season staying up is like winning the league but I know in my own heart and in my own methods what we can do.

'We didn’t win the league by fluke last year, we won it because we were organised and we let in the least amount of goals. We’re tightening up at the back, that’s what we need to do'...

Maidstone’s injury list reached eight when Joe Ellul and Dominic Odusanya were ruled out of Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Wealdstone... Joan Luque, Jerome Binnom-Williams, Sol Wanjau-Smith, Hady Ghandour, Henry Woods and Raphe Brown are the other absentees.

Hayrettin said... 'W’ve got eight players out injured... They’re all good players... With what we’ve got here and the players coming back, I think we’ll be OK.'”

In the Halifax Courier Halifax manager Chris Millington says his side will take confidence from their recent upturn in form ahead of Saturday's visit to Aldershot, [who are the next visitors to Altrincham].

After failing to win any of their first five matches, The Shaymen have taken seven points from the last nine available, including only their second win of the season on Tuesday when they defeated Gateshead 2-0. And Millington feels... 'There's a lot of maturity and experience within this group'... he said... 'For the most part, they understood we were on a pathway of developing the team and trying to evolve it and develop the chemistry between them, so I think they were pretty cool, calm and collected...

'The work they're doing is moving them all in the right direction... What we try and do as a staff is give the lads a framework to operate within, and within that we want them to express themselves...

'One of the really good things that's come out of a difficult start to the season is that I think we've all been given a healthy dose of humility,' he said...

'It's vitally important that everyone's contributing, so Sam Johnson's making saves, Jesse Debrah's sprinting in and recovering to sweep up behind players, Jamie Stott's winning headers, the list goes on,' he said...

'The staff and the players and I know it will come good and that we will perform to a high standard more often than not,' he said...

Millington confirmed goalkeeper Tom Scott has joined Guiseley on loan for a month... 'Part of the agreement with him re-signing was to not only work with him on the training ground, which we have for the previous 12 months, but to then expose him to the learning that takes place in playing competitive games,' he said...

Luke Summerfield and Tom Clarke are both injury doubts for the trip to Aldershot this weekend...

On [next opponents] Aldershot, who lost 2-0 at Notts County on Tuesday, their sixth defeat in eight games this season, Millington said, 'Results don't really tell us a great deal because at the moment a very good Gateshead side have only won one game so far this season, and I've got no doubts they'll finish in the top half... So we don't look too deeply into the results'" of the opposition, he concluded.

Another team having a troubled start to the season are Torquay United. Devon Live tells us that "Torquay United manager Gary Johnson cut a dejected figure after his side were thumped 4-1 at home by Solihull Moors on Tuesday night. Despite a good start by the Gulls, which saw them go in front through Will Goodwin, Solihull were soon back on level terms through Andrew Dallas before Joe Sbarra put the visitors in front by half-time.

Dallas added a third from the spot after a foul on Josh Kelly and Callum Maycock added a fourth in stoppage time to leave the Gulls with just one point from four home league games so far this season...

'We had a plan to shut them down early and the lads worked hard to do that and earnt our goal,' Johnson said. 'Then Ross (Marshall) coming back from a corner got tripped and wasn’t in position when they scored... It’s not only us that they are scoring goals against... There are teams in this league that we will give better games to and then there will be three or four teams that are further forward than us and we are going to need a bit of luck and a proper referee if we are to have half a chance...

'Unfortunately, we are just starting our build and we have to work out who is good enough and who’s not good enough... We seem to be getting yellow cards by the second… I don’t know what’s happening...

'It is going to take a bit of work, of course, and probably a few new players eventually, when you can and the players you want become available. But you can easily make your squad weaker, so you have to be careful. I think we are the youngest group in the league'".

PHIL "HAPPY WITH PERFORMANCE"

Following the draw on Tuesday night against Scunthorpe United, Altrincham manager Phil Parkinson was interviewed for Alty TV. Despite the result, the manager declared himself "happy with the performance" as he attributed the failure to take three points to individual errors.

But he also admitted that Alty had not "been clinical enough in both boxes". Nevertheless, he had praise for striker Marcus Dinanga (right) saying that he "was superb" and "had one of the best games he's played for the club" whilst, overall, the team's "patterns of play were outstanding".

NEXT: DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE

Altrincham travel to east London for Saturday's game with Dagenham & Redbridge, who suffered a heavy defeat at Wrexham on Tuesday night, following an even heavier 0-5 reverse in their previous fixture, at home to Notts County.

Dagenham & Redbridge report how "A tough Tuesday night in North Wales saw the Daggers defeated 4-1 at the hands of Wrexham...

After a fairly even first 20 minutes, the Dragons started to pick up the pace... Then, in the 25th minute, Ollie Palmer won a header in the 6-yard box following a brilliant delivery from James Jones, putting the home side 1-0 up...

On the brink of halftime, Wrexham continued to push for a second goal... A corner was awarded to the home side which Mullin headed home to put them 2-0 up.

3 minutes into the second half, [former Alty man] Yoan Zouma went down following an aerial challenge, seeing him stretchered off in the 55th minute following a lengthy stoppage in play. On came Harry Phipps in his place...

Wrexham got their 3rd of the night through Paul Mullin in the 73rd minute, before Palmer made it 4 in the 75th minute.

Junior Morias continued his fine goalscoring form with a consolation goal in added time of the second half, after smashing home Josh Walker's cut-back".

The Daggers' line up was 1. Justham, 17. Zouma, 19. Ling, 12. Robinson, 11' Weston, 5. Grant, 8. Sagaf, 20. Vilhete, 24. Morias, 9. McCallum, 7. Walker. Subs: 6. Mussa, 13. Strizovic, 25. Phipps, 35. Lawson.

NEXT VISITORS: ALDERSHOT TOWN

As Altrincham seek a first home-win of the campaign, the next side to visit the J. Davidson Stadium (on 24 September) will be another struggling side, Aldershot Town.

On Tuesday, Aldershot lost at Notts County and Aldershot Town themselves report that "The Shots fell to defeat in Nottingham after goals from Cedwyn Scott and Macauley Langstaff secured a 2-0 victory for Notts County...

County perhaps should have entered half-time in the lead. A dangerous ball into the box found Cedwyn Scott in space in the box but his glancing header went just wide of the post.

Notts County started the second-half looking like they had a point to prove, dominating possession and their dominance bore fruit when Cedwyn Scott gave the hosts the lead in the 52nd minute...

The home side almost doubled their lead in almost identical circumstances five minutes later..

Notts had a second in the 64th minute. Aaron Nemane was found in plenty of space on the right-wing and his low cross was turned in from close range by Macauley Langstaff.

The hosts were controlling the game and continuing to look dangerous as the second-half progressed and though they did threaten the Shots goal, Ashby-Hammond wasn’t called into action...

Shots lineup: 1. Luca Ashby-Hammond, 2. Archie Davies, 3. Ollie Harfield, 5. Tyler Cordner, 7. Justin Amaluzor, 9. Inih Effiong, 11. Harrison Panayiotou (14. Francis Amartey 74′), 20. Michael Klass (17. Faysal Bettache 74′), 22. Giles Phillips (c) (18. Ody Alfa 86’), 23. Ryan Glover, 27. Tommy Willard. Subs not used: 13. Ryan Hall, 16. Corey Jordan."

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

Whilst the pre-match one-minute's silence for the late Queen was marked impeccably at the J. Davidson Stadium on Tuesday night, that was not the case at Wrexham where "It was disappointing to hear the one-minute silence before the 4-1 victory against Dagenham & Redbridge disturbed be a small number of individuals among the 9835 in attendance.

To have the Club’s name in the media this morning for all the wrong reasons, is not a scenario that should have occurred and we wish to apologise to all who were offended by the actions of the minority, while thanking the vast majority who did observe the one-minutes silence.

A number of the individuals who disturbed the one-minute silence were asked to leave the Racecourse Ground for their own safety".

The Nottingham Post reported that on Tuesday "The Magpies made it eight games unbeaten in the National League

Eight matches unbeaten, four consecutive wins and two clean sheets in a row, Notts County are on fire in the National League at the moment.

The Magpies continued where they left off against Dagenham and Redbridge, with two second half goals from Cedwyn Scott and Macaulay Langstaff seeing off the challenge of Aldershot on Tuesday evening...

'I thought the opposition was fantastic, we were not surprised by that, but we were struggling at the start of the game,' said the Notts boss.

'We changed twice because they were causing us so many problems, and then I thought the players adapted and concentrated so well...

Geraldo Bajrami: It was another brilliant performance from the Albanian, so surely, this time he has to start the next game... Matty Palmer ran Bajrami very close for the man of the match award, that being said, it was another unbelievable performance from the midfielder".

The Oldham Chronicle reports that "Latics boss John Sheridan was apologetic after his stuttering side slumped to a 3-0 defeat at Woking... Latics slid to a lowly 16th place...

'I'm not someone who makes excuses,' said Sheridan. 'We've still got enough players out there today to go and get a result, young lads in the team who have come in on loan, it's a tough league to come in and learn the game... It's nowhere near good enough.'

Mike Fondop hit the crossbar for Latics, and saw a goal ruled out by the officials, but those were the highlights of an otherwise dreadful night for the travelling supporters.

Former Southampton striker Tyreke Johnson opened the scoring for the Cards in the 19th minute... Nine minutes later it was 2-0 when Luke Wilkinson headed home from a corner.

Johnson wrapped up an impressive three points before the hour when he lashed home".

ALTRINCHAM 2-2 SCUNTHORPE UNITED

Above: Altrincham lined up for a pre-match minute's silence to mark the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

An 81st minute equaliser from Ryan Colclough against his former club gave Altrincham a point which they well deserved.

Right: Ross Barrows had a good game at right-back and here he is seen getting instructions from Neil Sorvel during a break in play.

The match had been barely three minutes old when a floodlight failure along one side of the pitch halted the game for nearly eight minutes. After a first-half of often frantic play, and a lack of composure from both sides, it was deep into the eight added minutes before the interval when Altrincham took the lead. Good play from Barrows and Conn-Clarke on the right saw the latter's shot blocked by the keeper but the ball fell for Elliot Osborne to net (45+5 mins).

The visitors rocked Altrincham with two goals in four minutes midway through the second half. First Butterfield netted after a Scunthorpe advance up the left by Apter saw the ball come out to the former Barnsley man who scored comfortably (65 mins).

The Iron were then awarded a rather fortuitous penalty, following a corner, when Osborne was adjudged to have barged over substitute Beestin on the front edge of the box. Nuttall converted the penalty convincingly (69 mins).

But Altrincham were to dominate the final fifteen minutes and got their deserved reward in the 81st minute when an advance up the right by substitute Kaja ended with the ball falling to Colclough to steer home an equalizer. The visitors were content to slow down the game, seemingly content with a draw, a result which left the two clubs where they started as the bottom two in the National League and also left Alty still seeking a win after eight fixtures this season.

Matc report here.

SCUNTHORPE TAKE POSITIVES FROM DRAW AT ALTY

At Scunthorpe United "Interim assistant manager Michael Nelson provided his reaction to his side's 2-2 draw at Altrincham...

Two goals inside three second-half minutes turned the game on its head with Jacob Butterfield side-footing in an equaliser in the 65th minute for United's first goal in four matches.

Scunthorpe, who went into the game on a six-match losing streak, then took the lead when Joe Nuttall made no mistake from the penalty spot after Alfie Beestin was upended.

However, former Iron winger Ryan Colclough scored a late equaliser from close range to restore parity.

Nelson said 'In the first half I felt we started well... It was really disappointing to concede a goal just before half-time.

'A few words were said at the break and credit to the lads because they came out and reacted really well in the second half. I thought we kept the ball well... It was really disappointing we couldn't hang on in the end to keep all three points.

'Alfie Beestin and Liam Feeney made a different when they came on and it helped spin the game on its head, and we went 2-1 up. We could see them getting the ball down our left hand side so we brought Mase on to get a bit more security down there, but unfortunately we couldn't keep them out.

'It's a step forward and a point on the board away from home... It would have been very easy for the lads to concede that goal just before half-time, and then roll over in the second half with the way things have been going lately...

Hpefully we can take the positives from this'".

NEXT: DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE

Altrincham travel to Victoria Road to face Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday. For The Daggers it will be a second game in succession against a Phil Parkinson side, following their clash with Wrexham on Tuesday night, which they were to lose 2-1.

Before Tuesday's game, Dagenham & Redbridge reported that "Daryl McMahon’s Daggers will be looking to get back to winning ways as we travel to Wales on Tuesday to face Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham side.

The Daggers are searching for a win following our most recent 5-0 loss at home to Notts County".

When Alty last visited Dagenham, in October 2021, a 94th minute goal secured a wonderful win for Altrincham against the then league leaders.

Dagenham started well but Altrincham took a 10th minute lead when Dan Mooney fed Joel Senior who advanced up the wing and his cross from the right was diverted into the net by defender Reynolds at the near post. However, The Daggers levelled after 35 minutes when Vilhete scored a simple goal.

Then Dagenham took the lead as Robinson converted a cross from the lively Weston.

In the second half, Alty grew into the game after an early threat from the hosts. Finally, and deservedly, Altrincham drew level in the 87th minute when substitute Josh Hancock scored a fine goal from a Senior feed (87 mins).

With almost the final kick of the game Dan Mooney scored after substitute Leitch-Smith got free on the right and fed Colclough, who was clattered as he entered the box but the ball ran free for Mooney to sweep the ball into the net to stun the Daggers.

ALTY OLD BOYS

Phil Jordan reports that Middlesbrough introduced Duncan Watmore at the start of the second half on Tuesday night against Cardiff City, when they trailed 0-3 at home. Duncan scored their first goal but they still lost, 2-3.

Jeff King scored the winning goal and was later booked as Chesterfield stayed top of the National League table after beating Southend United 3-2.

Kole Hall was the scorer at the Deva Stadium as Chester FC beat Southport 1-0.

Callum Dolan put Warrington Rylands 2-0 up at home to Hyde but Jack Redshaw scored the visitors' third goal as they roared back to win 2-4.

MARRIOTT AND COLCLOUGH NOMINATED

Altrincham FC reports that "Ryan Colclough and Isaac Marriott (right) have had their sterling efforts last season officially acknowledged after earning nominations for the prestigious Northwest Football Awards.

This year's glittering presentation night takes place at Emirates Old Trafford on Monday, November 7th, and it's possible both Ryan and Isaac could be stepping forward to receive a trophy if Altrincham fans rally round and vote in sufficient numbers...

Ryan has been nominated in the National League player-of-the-year category, while Isaac is in the running for The Athletic Rising Star accolade... Cast your vote for two of Alty's finest here.

BEFORE TONIGHT'S GAME

Scunthorpe United report that former Alty player "Tony Daws, the Iron’s interim first team manager, has previewed Tuesday night's away game against Altrincham.

He told Iron Player 'We’re looking forward to Tuesday night, we’ll go across there in good spirits... We came in on Saturday morning and trained, and had an in-house 11 v 11. We tried to replicate the distance covered, so around 10km, and the players managed to do that. We came in and did the work, so hopefully, that’ll be good preparation for Tuesday.”

He continued 'Some of the players needed that, because they’ve not played too many games... It gave us a good opportunity to cast our eyes over all the players, and have a look at different formations, different shapes, and different players in different positions. We wanted to try and find out which is our best shape, and our best 11...

'It’ll be a battle, as both teams need to win. They may also be as anxious as we are, but they are at home so they’ll have to come at us, which may give us chances on the counter attack. It’ll be a difficult game because both teams are at the wrong end of the table for the wrong reasons'...

Tony spoke further... saying 'We’ll go to Altrincham and be positive, and again try and play on the front foot, with respect to how they play, and the players they’ve got, and their shape and strategy'...

The boss also provided an update on full-backs Mason O’Malley and Reagan Ogle, saying: “Mason and Reagan are back in the squad... Jordan Hallam is still in the treatment room with the medical staff. Marcus Carver has got a strain as well'...

Finally, speaking about the Iron’s newest addition Aiden Marsh, following his loan move from Barnsley, Daws reiterated... 'He has great pace and and he can score goals. He likes to run in behind the opposition and he may be that little spark that we need sometimes'".

TONIGHT'S GAME v SCUNTHORPE UNITED

Following the pause in games applied during the mourning period for Queen Elizabeth II, Altrincham resume first-team football tonight (Tuesday) as they welcome Scunthorpe United to the J. Davidson Stadium.

Given that manager Phil Parkinson has made five or six changes for each of the last two games, and has also acquired three new players in the past fortnight, (new signing Zak Goodson and loanees Eddy Jones and Dan Malone), Altrincham's starting eleven tonight is unpredictable.

The game features the two bottom clubs in the National League in the first ever league clash between the two clubs. Alty will be hoping to build on their ascendancy earned in two previous FA Cup clashes between the sides, having won two First Round replays at Moss Lane against The Iron in their litany of giantkilling acts.

ALTY SIDE LOSE NARROWLY TO MUFC

Altrincham FC report on a game played last Wednesday which ended Manchester United U-18s 3 Altrincham Reserves 2 (Billingsley 36, Jones 76)

"Altrincham fielded a team made up of players from the first-team, Reserves, Academy and Youth squads for a behind-closed-doors game against Manchester United under-18s at The Cliff...

Owen German and Harlan Rodgers-Morris were excellent in midfield, giving Dion Bohe, Sharif Islam and Loui Williams plenty of the ball... with a back four or Liam Brockbank, Josh Jordan, Liam Evans and Ewan McGeady holding firm.

Their impressive start was duly rewarded when Lewis Billingsley reacted first to a save from a Williams effort, giving Altrincham a deserved lead going into the break.

In the second half, both sides made lots of changes... United gave Junior Bopde lots of work to do early on in the half, with the Robins keeper equal to the challenge... Ryan Morton had a couple of great opportunities to increase the visitors' lead...

United equalised... but this did not deter the young Altrincham side, who soon regained the lead when Tom Jones unleashed a ferocious strike into the top corner from 25 yards. Late on, 16-year old Lucas Alcroft and 17-year old Mike Comber made their senior debuts for the club.

The tables were turned near the end, as United underlined their elite quality with two goals in the final five minutes...

Said Reserves boss Ross Speight 'It was a real mix of players from different squads coming together to represent the club so well on and off the pitch... The great work that Paul Fay and Sara Newton put in with the youth players was clear to see tonight... It was great to see how my coaches Danny Jarrett and Max Pouncey helped me link up the senior players with the Academy players to play so well against a world-class Academy. It was also great to have Matty Kosylo (above, left) join the coaching staff and taking time with the younger players".

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

Wealdstone should have faced Alty on Saturday but for the cessation of all football following the death of Wueen Elizabeth II.

When the sides do eventuially meet, the visitors may be fielding a new goalkeeper, as Wealdstone report that manager "Stuart Maynard [has] continued the link with his hometown and former club Watford by adding another former Hornet to his squad.

The manager has already got Sam Howes, Ashley Charles, Mason Barrett and Dom Hutchinson in his ranks and this week added Dante Baptiste, a 20-year-old goalkeeper, to his squad to provide competition and back up for Howes.

'Dante is a somebody we know from Watford and we’d watched him a lot,' said Maynard who started off his playing career as an apprentice at Vicarage Road....

A product of the Norwich City Academy, Baptiste joined Watford in the summer of 2018... and earned rave reviews for his performance on loan last season at Southern League South play-off winners Farnborough.

He spent pre-season with the Stones, playing in friendlies against Billericay and Chelmsford City".

We read in the Echo News that "Southend United boss Kevin Maher feels new boy Marcus Dackers will boost his side in both boxes.

Striker Dackers (19), who is six foot seven inches tall, has joined Blues on a month long loan from Salford City...

'His size is a major asset in both boxes', said Maher. 'That will be important to us and he’s someone who will occupy defenders. He will bring others into the game as well and he’s got a decent record goalscoring wise during his time on loan at Chester.

'He’s something different to what we already have and he’s a decent footballer as well'...

Dackers has impressed while out on loan with Stalybridge Celtic and Chester...

'He was a name brought to us a little while ago and he’s someone we’ve looked at and kept an eye on,'” said the Blues chief...

Maher will not be short of options in attack. Callum Powell, Chris Wreh and Aaron Cosgrave are also available while Jake Hyde could also be back in contention after recovering from a hamstring injury.

But Maher, who still has Rhys Murphy and Harry Cardwell out injured, believes competition for places is crucial".

According to the Derbyshire Times Chesterfield midfielder "Manny Oyeleke is on the mend but will not be back until about January following long-term injury.

The midfielder, who is out of contract at the end of the season... 'Is okay, he is off his crutches, he is walking,' first-team coach Gary Roberts said... 'It was a six-month injury from the operation, and I think we might be three months in now so you are probably looking at January time for Manny... He has had some horrendous injuries'... Roberts added."

Notts County "have completed the signing of West Bromwich Albion’s Quevin Castro on loan until 8 January.

The Portuguese attacking midfielder began his career on the English non-league circuit before joining Ipswich’s academy and earning trials with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal.

He signed a two-year deal with the Baggies [WBA] last summer... This season Castro has spent time on loan in League One with Burton Albion...

'From what we’ve seen, Quev has all the tools to do what we ask our attacking players to do without the ball,' said Williams... 'He’s got the tools to step on to people very quickly and win the ball back... But he's not going to walk into this team; far from it. We have the likes of Jim O’Brien and Sam Austin'...

Castro shares Portuguese heritage with another attacking midfielder Ruben Rodrigues... 'Ruben is someone who in many teams would have limited defensive responsibility, but that’s not the case here,' said the head coach...

'Working hard for the team out of possession is a big part of my game and if I can get on the same page as some of the other attacking players in the team, we’ll have a lot of fun. It’s always a great feeling when the fans respond to a trick or piece of skill, but first and foremost I want to be part of the team and earn my team-mates’ respect before showing that side of my game'" said the player.

ZAK'S "FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY" AT ALTY

On 30 August, Altrincham FC announced the sginging of Ilkeston Town forward Zak Goodson and he made his debut as a used substitute at Solihull Moors in Alty's most recent game.

He told the NL Paper, after joining Altrincham "It's a big change for me; I have always been part-time".

"Now it's about me working hard and trying to adapt my game to the way we want to play. It was good to get on at Solihull and have a taste of it...

"The intensity was a lot higher than what I am used to. The ball was not in the air as much and it is a lot more technical.

"The lads like to get it down and play and that is something I am looking forward to getting involved with.

"This is a fantastic oportunity for me...

"I have to come on and try to do well, run around and hold up the ball where I can, get it into the wide players. But, as time goes on, I want to be pushing to get into the team and scoring a few goals this season".

TONY IS HAPPY AT WARRINGTON

Whilst the move to full-time has attracted Zak Goodson to Altrincham (see above), that change of training regime led to the departure of seven experienced players, one of whom was goalkeeper Tony Thompson.

The NL Paper has an interview with Tony Thompson (right).

He reveals that, as well as at Altrincham, "I had some really good options to go full-time elsewhere but I've created this career for myself and it's a stable one. The company I work for is amazing, with chances to progress...

"At this stage of my life I need to put my personal life first. I'm buying my first house with my girlfriend and that's the reason [I'm staying part-time]; mortgages aren't cheap... I'm getting on the property ladder and I want to be comfortable".

He continued "I'd had a long stint at Alty but everything has to come to an end... There's no hard feelings. I still love the club and everyone there".

Along with Tony, his Alty team-mates Tom Hannigan and Andy White have also moved to Warrington Town, where another ex-Alty friend Sean Williams, also plays. Moving as a group to The Wire made the transition easier for Tony.

However, he continued, "I don't want to regress as a player... in a lower league. I'm only 27... Some people think I'm a lot older than that because of my hairline!"

At Warrington, "We've already had a team night out. I think that's more important than training sometimes... I think that camaraderie is massive. You take that into your games".

NATIONAL LEAGUE LIFTS BAN

Altrincham FC has stated that "Further to the announcement that the funeral for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be held on Monday 19 September, the National League can confirm fixtures scheduled for week commencing Monday 12 September will go ahead as scheduled.

Prior to our home fixture on Tuesday 13th September versus Scunthorpe United, we will observe a one-minute silence and wear black armbands as a mark of respect".

NEXT GAME: SCUNTHORPE UNITED

Altrincham welcome Scunthorpe United to the J. Davidson Stadium on Tuesday for the first match of the season under the J. Davidson Stadium floodlights. Before the campaign began neither club would have expected this fixture to be a clash of the two bottom clubs in the Vanarama National League but that is what it will be. Indeed, the Robins are till seeking a first win of the season in their eighth fixture, whilst the Iron have lost six matches on the run after an opening day victory in the National League.

Left: Tony Daws in his Altrincham days. Image courtesy of Barry Pikesley.

The Lincolnshire club is currently managerless following the sacking of experienced EFL boss Keith Hill. Pending the appointment of a new manager, the club's interim manager is a former Altrincham player, Tony Daws who made 6(+1) appearances for the Robins in the Conference, and a further appearance in the FA Trophy, in the 1996-97 season. Tony is the Academy Manager at Scunthorpe and this is his third stint as caretaker or interim manager of The Iron since 2011.

Tony had started out as a player with Manchester United before moving on to Notts County and Sheffield United. He then enjoyed a six-season spell as a player at Scunthorpe United (1987-93). Grimsby Town, Lincoln City, Halifax Town and Scarborough were also on his CV before he joined Altrincham.

As previously reported here, the match on Tuesday night could be the first time that a number of Altrincham players make their first starts of the season in front of spectators at the J Davidson Stadium, with the home faithful yet to see Ollie Byrne, Aidan Roxburgh, Egli Kaja, Alex Sami, Stoke City loanees Dan Malone and Eddy Jones, new signing Zak Goodson and Marcus Dinanga start a competitive home game this season.

However, Byrne, Goodson, Eddy Jones and Dinanga have all started away games this campaign and Kaja and Sami have been used subs at Moss Lane, but Roxburgh and Malone have not played for the club at all, yet, in this campaign.

Two Altrincham players who Scunthorpe will recognize in the Alty squad are winger Ryan Colclough, who joined Altrincham in November 2020 after his release by The Iron, and Ross Barrows, released by Scunthorpe as a youngster in 2013.

ALTY OLD BOY

Following last weekend's match, Nantwich Town announced that "Dave Cooke is leaving his role as First Team Manager. This decision has been made mutually by both parties for the longer-term future of the club.

"[Former Alty man] Ritchie Sutton (left) will take interim charge of the First Team and will be supported by Dave until a new manager is appointed.

“Under Dave’s guidance and management, the club has enjoyed many memorable and exciting occasions and great successes over the past five years, including reaching the first-round proper of the FA Cup twice, two Cheshire Senior Cup wins and producing a team that has constantly competed at the top end of the division, despite having a lesser budget than most of our peers at this level. He has also played a significant part in identifying, recruiting, and developing numerous young players and we are hopeful that we will be retaining his vast and invaluable experience that will see him continue to assist the club and future management team in a recruitment capacity".

In his first match in charge, last Tuesday, Ritchie oversaw a 1-0 win for The Dabbers over Belper Town in the Northern Premier League .

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

From Devon Live we learn that "Torquay United's assistant manager Aaron Downes says the team feels they need results at home to instill fans' belief in the new squad.. Torquay's 2-1 win at Southend United... ended a four-game losing streak, Aldershot Town were due to be visitors to Plainmoor today...

Downes... said.. 'The fans are always massive for us, home and away, but especially at home, and we feel we need a couple of results at home to really instill their belief in us and the group...

'With a large group of new players at the club, there was always going to be a learning curve in the early stages of this season... They only have a squad big enough for the new players to learn on the job... That is the reality of Torquay's situation...

Twenty-year-old striker Will Goodwin got his first goal at Southend, after joining the club on loan from Stoke City in the summer and playing in all seven games, and Downes said that did him the world of good. But he also praised all three strikers for the way they have worked hard, including big summer signing Aaron Jarvis, who made his Gulls debut at Roots Hall after picking up an injury in pre-season".

NEXT: ALTRINCHAM v SCUNTHORPE UNITED

Whilst Tuesday's visit from Scunthorpe United will be the Iron's first visit to Moss Lane for forty-two years, as well as being their inaugural league match against Altrincham, nevertheless the visitors may select a number of players familiar to current day Robins supporters.

The closest link is to defender Reagan Ogle (left) who played for Altrincham on loan from Accrington Stanley in March 2021. Having played four full matches for Altrincham, it was announced on 18 March 2021 that an initial month-long loan period had been extended to the end of the 2020-21 season. Reagan went on to make 11(+1) appearances for Alty that season.

Another recent link to Altrincham is with striker Marcus Carver who played against Alty for Chorley on several occasions, notably in 2018/19 season. From much further back in time, The Iron's current captain Liam Feeney was in Salisbury City's side, not least in a memorable 3-3 draw in 2007 in Wiltshire after Alty had led 3-0 with just 18 minutes to go.

More recently, Feeney also featured for a Blackpool XI against Altrincham, as the Seasiders were defeated 2-1 in a pre-season friendly match at Moss Lane in July, 2019.

Another Scunthorpe player, Elliott Whitehouse, played for Nuneaton Town against Alty in 2019 and was a substitute for Lincoln City when Alty lost at Sincil Bank in the FA Cup in 2016.

A Scunthorpe player who arrives with an impressive EFL background is Jacob Butterfield. He counts Barnsley, Norwich City, Bolton Wanderers (loan), Crystal Palace (loan), Middlesbrough, Huddersfield Town, Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday (loan), Bradford City (loan) and Luton Town as his former clubs whilst his move to Scunthorpe came from Perth side St Johnstone, having joined the Scottish club following a spell Down Under with Melbourne Victory.

The Iron also have two loanees from EFL clubs intheir ranks in Rob Apter (Blackpool) and Isaac Fletcher (Middlesbrough).

In their most recent match, a 0-2 home defeat to Boreham Wood, The Iron lined up as follows: 1. Marcus Dewhurst, 6. Andrew Boyce, 7. Liam Feeney (c), 9. Joe Nuttall, 11. Marcus Carver 12. Jai Rowe, 15. George Taft, 19. Jacob Butterfield, 23. Colin Daniel, 25. Rob Apter, 27. Isaac Fletcher. Subs: 8. Alfie Beestin, 16. Owen Foster (gk), 28. Dan Gallimore, 20. Cameron Wilson, 4. Elliott Whitehouse

Matt also speaks to Brian about his busy role as a goalkeeping coach for Altrincham Football Club and his involvement with the New Zealand national side.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

From Berkshire Live comes confirmation that "Maidenhead United Football Club (MUFC) said it will be 'sad' to leave its historic grounds as plans to build a new stadium at Braywick park is expected to be submitted this winter. Councillors sitting on the Maidenhead town forum heard the club aims to submit its scheme by December following consultations with its supporters, stakeholders, and the public.

The Magpies finalised their deal with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to purchase a piece of land at the northern end of Braywick Park for a reported £460,000 in April 2022 in order to build a new stadium larger than its current base in York Road, which has been in use since 1871 and is the oldest used football ground in the world.

Speaking at the meeting on Monday, September 5, MUFC chief executive Jon Adams said 'It is sad that we are leaving York Road... but clearly [the move] is the only way for us to achieve our ambitions for the club'...

The meeting heard the historic football ground is 'very old' and needs 'significant investment' of about £10m in order to keep it fit-for-purpose... The proposal incorporates a large stadium seating 5,200 people, a multi-purpose pitch to facilitate other sport activities... a clubhouse, and a smaller football pitch to host community activities and amateur games...

Mr Adams added this move is not too far away from the existing site, which means the club will still be connected to the town and the local transport links".

According to Gloverscast "New boy Will Dawes's journey to Yeovil Town bears similarities to Tom Knowles when he first arrived at Huish Park, manager Chris Hargreaves has said. The winger joined for an undisclosed five-figure fee from Stratford Town at the start of the month...

Speaking to our man Ben Barrett on Thursday, Hargreaves said... 'There is a jump (from playing at Stratford) and we are aware of that... But he has huge potential, very similar to Tom Knowles when he came to the club'...

The 22-year-old featured in every match for Stratford, who play in the Southern League Premier Division Central, two tiers below the National League, this season.

Hargreaves suggested he sees Dawes as a player who can be developed in to a saleable asset in a similar fashion to Knowles, who was sold to League Two Walsall on the eve of the new season".

NEXT GAME: SCUNTHORPE UNITED

As things stand, the next match for Altrincham, following the postponement of Saturday's clash with Wealdstone, in deference to the period of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II, will be on Tuesday might at home to Scunthorpe United.

This means that match will be between the two bottom clubs in the Vanarama National League, with Alty a point ahead of Scunthorpe going into the match. Altrincham are still seeking a first win, having gained four points from draws, whereas Scunthorpe won their opening game of the season before losing the next six.

As previously reported here this will be The Iron's third visit to Moss Lane having twice been beaten by The Robins in FA Cup First Round replays.

The Iron started the season with experienced EFL manager Keith Hill in charge but he was sacked after five successive defeats up to and including the August Bank Holiday Monday matches.

Scunthorpe were relegated from League Two last season, losing 7-0 to Bristol Rovers on the final day of the season.

To date the manager's position remains vacant.

During Hill's 39-match tenure of the post the club earned just three victories, whilst losing 27 times and drawing on nine occasions. Hill had been appointed in November 2021 at Scunthorpe following the departure of Neil Cox.

NEW GROUNDSMAN AT ALTY

Folowing the resignation of longserving groundsman Neil Brown, Altrincham FC "announce the appointment of Adam Lawrence as our new head groundsman.

Adam was selected... after spending the last three years tending pitches at Stoke City and the FA's St George's Park headquarters.

He starts work at The J.Davidson Stadium later this month... Adam began to gain a reputation for helping prepare and maintain playing surfaces of the highest standard as part of the ground staff at the DW Stadium, where Wigan Athletic and Wigan Warriors rugby league team shared the same pitch.

He further developed his knowledge of turf management, care and renovation, as well as irrigation and mechanics, as training ground head groundsman and stadium deputy head groundsman at Shrewsbury Town from 2017-19.

More invaluable experience followed at Stoke's stadium and Clayton Wood training complex... and at St George's".

ALL MATCHES POSTPONED

The Vanarama National League has announced, "All National League System, FA Trophy, and grassroots fixtures scheduled for this weekend will not take place as a mark of respect. The Queen was the FA’s patron, and Prince William is its President.

At this moment National League fixtures will go ahead as planned from Monday 12 September onwards although we understand no sporting event of any kind will be permitted on the day of The Queen’s funeral.

The decision to postpone this weekend’s fixtures is taken in line with guidance from the FA in consultation with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The League fully supports this stance".

"FIVE GOALS, A NO-NO" DECLARES PARKINSON

In the Sale & Altrincham Messenger, press and media officer John Edwards writes that "Phil Parkinson pulled no punches after casting an eye over a 5-1 mauling for Altrincham at National League promotion hopefuls Solihull Moors... Parkinson was convinced five-goal drubbings were be a thing of the past for his full-time Robins... a defeat that left the Robins boss fuming 'I truly thought days like these were behind us, and I’m extremely disappointed with the performance.

Right: Josh Lundstram was his manager's Man of the Match at Solihull.

'That’s what I was holding on to, the fact that the performances have been good, even if we haven’t won yet. But that scoreline is absolutely unacceptable. If you can’t defend with intent, aggression and intensity and you can’t win your individual battles, that is what happens against very good players...

'We will have a drop-off every now and then, but when that does happen, it can’t be five goals conceded. That is a no-no. It can’t happen again.

'Aaron Bennett scored a good individual goal for us, but he is getting his eyes opened to how hard you have to work in this league. He was not alone. Overall, the work-rate was not there, and that is something we have to address quickly'... Parkinson added 'Eddy [Jones] was really solid at left-back, and Josh Lundstram was man-of-the-match for me, outstanding. Chris Conn-Clarke had a bit of a go, but that is as far as I can go with any positive comments'".

THE WEALDSTONE GAME

Wealdstone were the planned guests at the J. Davidson Stadium tomorrow (Saturday), but as stated above, all Saturday fixtures have now been postponed.

When Wealdstone last visited the JDS, less than five months ago on 23 April 2022, it was a match in which Alty boss Phil Parkinson selected many of the club's stalwarts who were about to leave the club in the wake of the decision to take the Robins into a full-time training regime.

A gusty wind was a contributory factor to an entertaining game at the J. Davidson Stadium in which Alty got themselves 4-0 up before spending the last twenty minutes on the back foot as the Stones' triple substitution gave them the upper hand.

Alty took an eighth-minute lead after a poor clearance by Wickens went to an Alty man. The ball was fed, left, to Colclough whose rasping cross-shot was smartly diverted into the net by an alert Kosylo. However, Thompson was the busier keeper in the first half as Alty played into a tricky wind.

Left: Matty Kosylo is congratulated on his, and Alty's, first goal of the game against Wealdstone last April.

It took just 32 seconds of the second half for Altrincham to double their lead when Kosylo's well-hit 25 yarder went through the hands of Wickens and into the net.

It was soon 3-0 as another long-range effort from Marriott hit the back of the net from 25 yards (52 mins). And the match seemed to be all over four minutes later as Mooney scored from just outside the box.

On the hour the Stones made a triple substitution and, after good skills from Dyer, a Cooper effort was diverted into his own net by Mullarkey to make it 4-1 ten minutes later. Umerah's stooping header from a freekick made it 4-2 after 77 minutes as the visitors pushed forward till the final whistle.

The Alty defence held out to record a 4-2 win.

The Altrincham squad comprised 1. Tony Thompson (c), 20. Andy White, 25. Toby Mullarkey, 24. Kyle Ferguson, 28. Eddy Jones, 8. Elliot Osborne, 32. Isaac Marriott, 7. Dan Mooney, 15. Matty Kosylo, 11. Ryan Colclough, 10. Josh Hancock. Subs: 2. Shaun Densmore, 6. Jake Moult, 14. Jake Cooper, 17. Ben Pringle, 26. Kole Hall.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

Southend United "announce the signing of Marcus Dackers from Salford City, who joins the club on a month's loan.

The 6ft 7 striker began his career at Premier League champions Manchester City, who he joined at the age of five. That was where he remained until 2015 when he signed for Brighton & Hove Albion.

After leaving Brighton, he signed for Salford in the summer of 2021. He has made two league appearances for the Ammies... While at Salford ... In the autumn of 2021, he scored seven goals in eight games [on loan] for Stalybridge. He then joined former Football League side Chester in January 2022, and bagged nine goals in 19 appearances for them".

According to the Maidenhead Advertiser, "Cole Kpekawa strongly believes Maidenhead United should have earned more than a 1-1 draw from their National League clash against FC Halifax Town...

The defender took the Magpies into the ascendancy with a fine effort on Saturday but his first goal in a black-and-white shirt... was overshadowed by Jordan Slew’s equaliser in the second half...

'I’m happy to get off the mark'... he said before adding 'But I’m a bit fuming we didn’t win. We lost two points today. We had so many chances to win the game, we just didn’t take them... We just didn’t take our chances'...

'Now we’ve got to try and bounce back against a tough side in Wrexham'... Said Kpekawa... 'We need to start taking our chances and we are conceding some very soft goals for our liking too'">

Dorking Wanderers have "confirmed the permanent signing of midfielder Alfie Egan from Boreham Wood.

Alfie, 25, was a graduate of the AFC Wimbledon academy back in 2016... Alfie would make 21 appearances for 'The Dons' in all, gaining further experience with loan spells at Sutton United, East Thurrock United and Kingstonian, before departing Wimbledon in 2019 and joining Ebbsfleet United...

Alfie's first year with 'The Fleet' concluded in relegation... Alfie remained with the Kent side as they began life in the National League South, and although the season was curtailed at the midway point due to the pandemic, the midfielder... didn't go unnoticed by Maidenhead United, who signed Alfie on loan for the remainder of the campaign...

Alfie returned to Ebbsfleet for the following season... before joining National League side Boreham Wood in the close season.

Manager Marc White said 'Alfie is a typical Wanderers type player and our fans will love him. He is excellent on the ball and exciting to watch'".

Boreham Wood add that "Despite the Club’s best efforts to keep Alfie, the player decided to depart Meadow Park in search of more game time, which has been limited so far this season in a Wood shirt".

Closer to home, Oldham Athletic "announce the loan signing of Joe McGlynn from Burnley.

The 19 year-old striker joins on a deal until 9 October.

Manager John Sheridan had high praise for the youngster... 'Joe is a player we’ve had interest in for a while...

'He comes from Burnley’s academy who’ve always produced a great calibre of player, and we think he’ll do well for us'...

Joe’s a product of the youth setup at Burnley, and has been a regular for their youth teams over the past few years'...

McGlynn, who’s a childhood friend of young Latic Will Sutton, became a regular for the under 23s in Premier League 2 last season".

ZAK INTRODUCES HIMSELF

Press and media officer Brian Flynn has interviewed Altrincham's new signing from Ilkeston Town, Zak Goodson, after he had made his debut as a used sub at Solihull last Saturday. Zak came across very well in the interview as he spoke of his previous experience at Ilkeston Town and Long Eaton.

Alty TV has the full interview.

ALTY UNDER-21S

As has emerged this week from a report on the Altrincham FC website (see below) there has been a major revamp of the club's youth setup.

There is now an Altrincham under-21s' team, which competes in the North West Under 21 Development League. This League comprises eleven clubs. Apart from Altrincham the members of the League are Stalybridge Celtic, Bootle, Chorley, 1874 Northwich, Irlam, Avro, The Steven Gerrard Academy, UDA Soccer U21 Cestrians, Wythenshawe Amateurs and Runcorn Linnets.

The UDA Academy is part of the University of Chester, where students earn a degree in three years across multiple academic choices whilst also playing football.

In their opening game of the season, at the Manchester Health Academy, Baguley, the Altrincham FC Under-21s beat Runcorn Linnets 3-0 thanks to goals from Thomas Jones, Adam Lynch and substitute Charlie Behan.

The Altrincham U-21 line-up comprised (in A/Z order) Lucas Aldcroft, Benjamin Atkinson, Sekouba Camara, Samuel Chambers, Michael Comber, Thomas Jones, James Kelly, Adam Lynch, Samuel Murphy, Loui Williams and Noah Tyson. On the bench were Charlie Behan, Edson Cata, Kareem Majzoub and Sheriff Njie.

ALTY YOUTH TEAMS RE-DEFINED

Altrincham's under-18s' team, which has operated for decades in the North West Youth Alliance Premier Division, has been replaced for 2022-23 at that level by the club's under-17 team, even though the league itself remains an under-18s competition.

Right: Altrincham FC Youth have won the NWYA Premier League on several occasions, including in 2015, as pictured right.

And Altrincham FC also reveals that "There is a new under-16 squad, competing mostly against players who are a year older in the North-West Youth Alliance Development Division...

The Robins' youth team [formerly an under-18s' outfit], meanwhile, are [now] in the North-West U-21 Development League".

The above link includes player Ben Taylor's "account of the opening fixture for our under-16 squad... against Wythenshawe AFC".

After Wythenshawe had scored first, Charley Jarrald equalised in a 1-1 draw...

Alty squad: 1. Louie Fallon, 2. Henry Shaw, 3. Lincoln Goddard, 4. Lewis Lambkin, 5. Harry O’Gara, 6. Ben Taylor, 7. Afernee Denise, 8. Kian Gonzalez, 9. Harrison Howells, 10. Henry Murphy, 11. Jack Chandler, 12. Teddy Woolland, 14. Oscar Cooper, 15. Mo Elnagi, 16. Corey Ferry, 17. Charley Jarrald.

George Raftery put together an under-17s' match report "as his side beat West Didsbury & Chorlton with goals from Cata, McCarthy, Ceesay and Gray before, in his own words, "Raftery scored a wonderful goal into the top left hand corner for 5-1".

Alty squad: Abdulelah Nassief, Joel Bailey, Alfa Balde, Edson Cata, Oliwier Fiedor, Thomas Higgins, Alfred Igbinake, Harrison Jarvis-McCarthy, Ajani Oshodin, Niyah Richards-Gray, George Raftery, Peter Arogun, Modoulamin Ceesay, Oliver Dixon, Will Spencer, Ian Vasconcelos Jose.

The Youth team report comes courtesy of Ben Atkinson". He reports that Adam Lynch put Alty ahead before Tom Jones added a second and Charlie Behan scored a third to clinch a 3-0 win.

Alty squad: Noah Tyson, Sam Chambers, Ben Atkinson, Sam Murphy, Lucas Aldcroft, Mike Comber, Sekouba Camara, Tom Jones, Adam Lynch, Loui Williams, Kareem Majzoub, Charlie Behan, Edson Cata, Sheriff Njie.

ALTY OLD BOYS

Southend United confirm that "Dan Mooney [right] has won the MidexPRO Goal of the Month award for August, earning 66% of the vote.

His strike against Oldham Athletic was the winner in Blues’ first victory of the season, and it was a very well-worked team goal.

Starting with the ball in Southend’s half, Wes Fonguck, Cav Miley, Chris Wreh and Callum Powell combined to give Fonguck a clear run towards the Latics’ penalty area.

The midfielder passed to Mooney, who took a touch and fired into the bottom corner from just inside the 18-yard box. It was the former Wales U21 international’s first goal for the club after signing from Altrincham in the summer".

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

In the Leader Live we learn that "Rory Watson has not come to Wrexham just to sit on the substitutes' bench and has vowed to push first choice goalkeeper Mark Howard for a starting place.

The 26 year-old was brought in as a short-term back-up on a non-contract basis after Christian Dibble picked up a knee injury days before the 2022-23 National League season kicked-off in August, joining Rob Lainton on the sidelines.

Most recently at Scunthorpe United, Watson has been named as a substitute for all seven games so far and has had his short-term deal extended until January...

'I am still young for a goalkeeper but I have played a lot of games,' said Watson, who started his career at Hull City and made more than 80 league appearances for Scunthorpe... 'I have not come here just to sit on the bench'...

Wrexham has entered a reserve team into the Central League this season and Watson intends to stake his claim in those matches. There has not been a second string outfit at The Racecourse since the end of the 2016-17 campaign and the league will provide important development opportunities for young players and first-team members who need game time....

'It is always good to have some games under your belt before you play so the reserve league is a good thing and it will be good to play in those games'...

'I left Scunthorpe and I had about a month-and-a-half off,'” said Watson. 'I went to Huddersfield for a week and a bit, trained there but then left... I jumped at the chance to come here... on a short-term basis'".

TEN AWAIT THEIR ALTY HOME DEBUTS

As Altrincham supporters arrive at the J. Davidson Stadium on Saturday for the eighth fixture of the season and the fourth match at home of the 2022/23 campaign, they may struggle to identify several of their club's starting eleven.

Not only have as many as nineteen different players already started a game for Alty this season but there are currently ten squad members who have been named in a matchday squad (home or away) but have yet to start a competitive match at Moss Lane this season.

And seventeen of those named in a matchday squad (home or away) this season were not contracted Altrincham FC employees last season. They are Baines, Barrows, Bennett, Brockbank, Byrne, Conn-Clarke, Cooper, Goodson, Hussain, Eddy Jones, James Jones, Kaja, Lundstram, Malone, Mee, Morton and Sami.

Alty's most recent game may not be much of a guide as to the starters next Saturday either. Five changes were made to the starting eleven at Solihull and that followed six changes for the preceding match against Chesterfield.

One of the major selection conundrums, as Saturday approaches, is who will start Saturday's match between the sticks as Altrincham's goalkeeper?

Will Saturday witness goalkeeper Ollie Byrne's home competitive debut for Altrincham, following his move from Connah's Quay Nomads over the summer?

When Ollie (right) signed for Alty, it was expected that he would be immediately installed as the club's first-choice keeper, replacing the departed Tony Thompson. But a long delay in securing Byrne's international clearance, following his spell playing in Wales, meant that Matt Gould was selected as the Alty keeper for the opening two fixtures.

Sadly, Matt was badly injured in the second fixture and, with Byrne's clearance to play still not received at that stage, Phil Parkinson brought in Dermot Mee, a young loanee keeper from Manchester United.

It is assumed that Alty are obliged to give Mee a decent amount of playing time and so it has been the Manchester United prospect who has kept goal for the last two fixtures, despite Byrne having now been cleared to play. Indeed Mee has started the last two fixtures despite Byrne having been cleared to make his first appearance in goal, as he did away at Boreham Wood. So, if Byrne is selected this Saturday it would be his home debut in the National League.

Other members of the squad who might make competitive home debuts on Saturday are defender Aidan Roxburgh, who has yet to be in a matchday squad since joining from Trafford, and forwards Egli Kaja (left) and Alex Sami who have only appeared from the bench so far.

Stoke City loanee Dan Malone is another whom the Moss Lane faithful have yet to see start a game, after he spent ninety minutes on the bench at Solihull last weekend. Meanwhile, fellow Stoke loanee Eddy Jones could be making a second home debut, following his loan spell with the club last season.

New signing Zak Goodson made his debut from the bench at Solihull last weekend but he has yet to be seen by spectators at Moss Lane.

It would also be Marcus Dinanga's first home start of the season on Saturday. if he is selected to start, as his three starts so far this season have all been away from home. So far at the JDS he has only been deployed as a used substitute. In addition to the above eight, both Ryan Morton and Amaar Hussain have been named in National League squads this season but have yet to start at Moss Lane but both are now out on loan.

It is certainly not going to be the case that all of those eight will start on Saturday against Wealdstone but several players do seem likely to make their first competitive starts of 2022-23 at Moss Lane. Hopefully Wealdstone will be as unfamiliar with some of the Altrincham players as many of the home supporters may be!

NEXT: WEALDSTONE

Wealdstone visit the JDS on Saturday with Altrincham seeking their first win of the season.

Wealdstone manager "Stuart Maynard feels it is a sign of how far his progressive side have come that they left the game on Sunday disappointed with a point against a National League powerhouse like Woking.

The Stones took the lead with a tenth-minute penalty from Max Kretzschmar and you half expected the home side to close the game out given they hadn't conceded a goal for more than 270 minutes. But Jermaine Anderson rattled in a fine equaliser and then the game petered out into a fairly uneventful draw.

'It's a good point,' said Maynard. 'I don't think either team deserved the three points, even though we hit the bar late on [through Tarryn Allarakhia]. They are a good solid team and they make it tough, they make it ugly, they make the game scrappy. We tried to play but it was a difficult afternoon to play...

'We've come a long way as a football club that we come away from a game with Woking and are disappointed with a point. We are in the top ten and we must keep the standards high...

'I thought we were very fluent in the first ten minutes and we went through them very quickly,' said the manager. 'There was dew on the surface early on. It's hard for us as we can't get the water on the pitch as we don't have a sprinkler system But that's where we are at as a club and that's why we have to take things slowly and take small steps'...

Midfielder Nathan Ferguson provided a real driving force in midfield... Said Maynard 'He kind of goes under the radar. You always want more from him as he has got more in his locker. He's a big, 6ft 4, powerful midfielder and he showed his power today and his quality. We would like him to chip in with more goals as he has a hammer foot'...

Striker Olufela Oladele provided Maynard with a boost by coming off the bench in his first game since... injury. Kretzschmar provided a scare though when he limped off near the end.

'We'll know more on Max on Tuesday,' said the manager. 'It looks like he just rolled his ankle and hopefully it's not too bad. Mason [Barrett] is back in training on Tuesday and will hopefully be back in the squad on Saturday.'"

ALTY OLD BOYS AND LOANEES

Phil Jordan reports that Amaar Hussain, on loan at Hyde united, was an unsued sub as they won 1-0 at home to FCUM on Tuesday night.

Nantwich Town won 1-0 at home to Belper Town, thanks to a goal by A-Jay Leitch-Smith.

Sam Sheridan started on the bench as Ashton United crashed out of the FA Cup 3-0 in their replay at Ashington.

Warrington Town started with Tony Thompson, Andy White, Tom Hannigan (right) and Sean Williams in their replay at home to Morpeth. Josh Amis was a substitute, only joining the action in the 90th minute.

The Wire went ahead in the 43rd minute as Hannigan headed home Williams's corner. Morpeth's 62nd minute equaliser came after an error by Thompson but Warrington regained the lead within two minutes and there was no further scoring. They now travel to Hyde United on Saturday week.

"WE NEED TO WIN BY ANY MEANS POSSIBLE"

Altrincham's first match of the season under the Moss Lane floodlights takes place next Tuesday when Scunthorpe United pay their first ever visit to the J. Davidson Stadium for a league match. The Iron have, however, visited Altrincham twice before, losing on each occasion in FA Cup First Round replays.

Their first visit was in 1974/75 season when a John Hughes goal in a 1-1 draw earned a replay at Moss Lane, which Alty won 3-1 thanks to goals from Morris, Hughes and Davison.

Six seasons later the sides played out a goalless draw in a First Round tie in Lincolnshire before a John Davison penalty in the replay at Moss Lane earned Alty a memorable Second Round tie at Anfield.

As things stand, next Tuesday's match would be a clash between the bottom and second-bottom clubs.

This week, Scunthorpe United reported that "Recent loan signing Rob Apter spok... after making his first start and winning the sponsors' man of the match award on Saturday against Boreham Wood, which unfortunately ended in a 2-0 home loss.

He began 'In the first half we had them, I thought we were on them. Second half we just didn’t do anything; they just had us. It was two poor goals as well. It was our mistakes that cost us the goals and it just wasn’t good enough. Giving away poor goals is what we need to fix. But we had chances first half, we just needed to put them away'...

With regards the recent appointment of interim first team manager Tony Daws, interim assistant manager Michael Nelson and their influence so far, Apter added 'They (Daws and Nelson) have been good'...

Relating to.. what he brings to the team, Apter said 'I was alright. I probably could’ve scored, that’s the only thing I can say. I like to get fans off their seats... I try to drive at the players and attack them to make them move and work'.

Finally, looking ahead to the Iron’s next two games away at Eastleigh and Altringham [sic!], Apter revealed...'We just need to try and get a result out of the game by any means possible'".

ALTY AND ANDY'S MAN CLUB

Altrincham FC announces that "This Saturday is World Suicide Prevention Day, and as we are hosting our friends from Wealdstone, in a Vanarama National League fixture at which there will be no segregation, it seemed the ideal opportunity to make Andy's Man Club our chosen charity partners for the day.

In a gesture that has been approved by the league, Alty’s players will show their support for the movement by wearing AMC shirts during the pre-match warm-up, while a Walk&Talk gathering has been arranged at Stamford Park’s Cafe In The Park, starting at 11.30am...

In addition, Andys Man Club will have a stand in the Community Sports Hall and bucket collections will be held in aid of this fantastic charity.

It’s always a day to look forward to when Wealdstone visit, given the way our relationship with them was further strengthened by their heartwarming response to Connor Kirby’s serious injury at Grosvenor Vale last year...

It is a stark statistic. Every two hours in this country, mental health issues force a sufferer to conclude there is no way out other than to take his own life... Often, the suffering is endured in silence, as was the case with 23-year old Andy Roberts, a picture of health on the outside but, unbeknown to family and friends, in such turmoil that he was driven to suicide one Monday in 2016, leaving behind an 18-month old daughter...

His mum and brother-in-law set up a help group, an outlet for others to unburden themselves. It was named Andy's Man Club, and it soon became an integral part of Altrincham FC’s emphasis on care in the community after we opened our doors at The J.Davidson Stadium and welcomed in a new local branch of AMC just over 18 months ago.

Numbers attending the Monday evening get-togethers have risen steadily since, and it is a source of great pride and satisfaction that we are able to acknowledge our special relationship with Andy's Man Club in an official capacity this coming weekend".

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

We read in the Nottingham Post that "Macaulay Langstaff [is] refusing to set personal targets at Notts County...

Notts County’s in-form frontman Macaulay Langstaff believes his job as the primary goal scorer in the team is made easier by the number of creative options the team has. The summer signing bagged his first hat-trick for the club at the weekend in the Magpies’ 5-0 win over Dagenham and Redbridge after getting a couple of braces in previous fixtures. His tally for the season in the National League is already up to nine goals after just seven games which is an astonishing record for a player coming up from the tier below.

His goals so far this term have pushed County to the third spot in the league table; still unbeaten after seven games... Off the back of a 30-goal season with Gateshead last year... even the most optimistic of Notts supporters would not have predicted this kind of start from a goalscoring perspective...

Said Langstaff... 'I try to take it game by game... and I’ll look back at the end of the season and decide whether I am happy or not'".

The Derbyshire Times tells us that "Joe Quigley says he does not ‘blame’ Spireites fans for giving him a hard time last season but hopes he is winning them over now with his performances.

The striker signed from Yeovil Town for an undisclosed fee in January but only scored two goals in 17 appearances.

However, the 25-year-old did not join in the easiest of circumstances, with then manager James Rowe, who signed him, departing within a couple of weeks. Quigley also... was tasked with replacing the goals of injured top scorer Kabongo Tshimanga... Quigley was criticised by some supporters, but those days are long gone now.

The forward has won over the majority of the fanbase with his hard-working displays as Town’s lone striker and he bagged his first goal of the season on Saturday in the win at Oldham Athletic.

He told the DT... I came in at a tricky time and my performances this year have been a lot better... When you are top of the table and you come in and you don’t hit the ground running it is tough and I understand that'...

He even has his own song now comparing [him] to Pele. He laughed... 'I find myself singing it at home in my head, it keeps me going'...

The former Bournemouth man... explained his role is about more than just finding the back of the net... 'I know the lone role is about helping the team get up the pitch and creating chances as well,' he said".

STATISTICS v PERFORMANCES

When the Non-League Paper reports that, in one National League match last Saturday, each side had thirteen shots and the away side had eight of those efforts on target against just six for the hosts, you could reasonably expect the outcome to have been a high-scoring draw or a narrow away win.

In fact, those statistics come from Altrincham's 5-1 defeat at Solihull Moors on Saturday.

But the performance marks, out of a maximum ten per player, tell a different story. The eleven Moors who started the game were awarded 84 points for their collective performances whereas the Altrincham starting eleven mustered just 72 points in the reporter's opinion. Elliot Osborne (right), with eight out of ten, was deemed Altrincham's best player whereas The Moors had five players who were awarded eight or nine out of ten.

ALTY TV HIGHLIGHTS

Alty TV highlights of the defeat at Solihull on Saturday are now available on YouTube.

"BRILIANT START" FOR CONN-CLARKE

Fleetwood Town states that their player "Chris Conn-Clarke was in action this weekend for Altrincham, and here’s an update on how he did during the match at Solihull Moors.

Conn-Clarke [left] has had a brilliant start on loan at Altrincham and also featured this weekend in their Vanarma National League match against Solihull Moors. The 20-year-old has made 7 appearances for Alty since joining the Club earlier in the season...

Conn-Clarke was involved in the first big chance in the game. The young forward won the ball high up the pitch and fed through Dinanga, whose shot from the edge of the box hit the post. Altrincham went a goal behind midway through the first half, but equalised on the 35th minute when Bennett found the back of the net.

The Fleetwood man nearly bagged his second goal for the Club, but was somehow denied from close range with a last-ditch block from the Solihull defender.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

The Derbyshire Times reports that "Chesterfield say they are ‘aware’ of allegations that one of their players was involved in a ‘vicious assault’ which left an Oldham Athletic player with ‘serious injuries’ and needing ‘hospital treatment’ after Saturday’s game.

The Spireites have released a statement regarding an incident after Saturday's match against Oldham Athletic. Earlier today the Latics said in a statement that Hallam Hope, 28, was attacked in the club staff car park.

Chesterfield responded... 'Following an incident which took place after Saturday’s game at Oldham Athletic, we are aware of an allegation relating to an unnamed Chesterfield player. We are assisting Greater Manchester Police with their enquiries'...

The earlier statement by Oldham Athletic read... 'Hallam sustained serious injuries which required hospital treatment and he will be out of action for some weeks'".

The Echo News reports from Southend that "An afternoon starting with Kacper Lopata-inspired excitement ultimately ended in frustration for Southend United on Saturday.

The Polish defender started his second spell with the Shrimpers as an unused substitute against Torquay United. But it was Blues’ problems at the other end of the pitch which ultimately meant their spells of pressure went unrewarded.

Southend went into the game looking to build on Monday’s win against Maidenhead. However, Kevin Maher’s side started sluggishly and found themselves behind after just four minutes with Ryan Hanson heading the visitors in front... It gave hope to a Torquay side who had been beaten in their previous four games.

And it also meant Gary Johnson’s side had something to hang on to as they opted to put men behind the ball. Blues started to get territorially on top before Torquay doubled their lead following a counter attack midway through the second half.

After that the Shrimpers really started to pile on the pressure... But Blues wasted a number of opportunities... That problem is nothing new and the Shrimpers have netted 119 goals in their past 132 league games.

However, it is a different group of players now trying to make Blues more prolific... The approach play is often to be admired with the clever promptings of Dan Mooney and, on Saturday, Bridge likely to ensure opportunities at this level...

The Shrimpers must find a way to finish off sides... Blues do have six strikers on the payroll. But one look at the statistics from Saturday shows where the problem lies...

The return of Lopata... will... bring added physicality to the side. That bodes well at the back... However, it is now all about finding a way to finish things off" up front.

From the Oldham Times we learn that manager "John Sheridan said he would shoulder the responsibility for defeat at home to his former club, Chesterfield.

The Spireites arrived at Boundary Park on the back of a six-game unbeaten start to the season... Latics were already braced for a tough game. But they conspired to shoot themselves in the foot by conceding after just 34 seconds, following a mistake by goalkeeper Magnus Norman that gifted Joe Quigley an early goal, before an unmarked Jeff King doubled the lead in the seventh minute.

Latics failed to recover from the double early blow, particularly after losing Dan Gardner just after the half-hour with a groin problem.

The influential midfielder has been added to an ever increasing injury list that includes captain Liam Hogan... but Sheridan said 'I'm the manager, I'm not going blame anyone else. I pick the team, I pick the shape of the team. When it doesn't work I'll take the blame, when it works everyone gets the credit...

'I wish I was still playing. I just want players to be hungry, because there's no better feeling when you go home after a Saturday win, everyone enjoys their weekend miles better and you come in and start again on Monday. But now you've got to reflect and it's a downer because of the performance...

'I think we're as good as any team in the league but our performances and results aren't showing that@".

The Derbyshire Times adds that Sheridan said "There is no blame on [keeper] Magnus (Norman), there is still 89 minutes to go, those things happen...

'The second goal, we have got so many bodies in the areas but we are not not touch-tight to people, we had possession of the ball... I have got some experienced players who need to step up'">

OPENING DAY WIN FOR ALTY YOUTH

In their first match of the NWYA Premier Division season, Altrincham FC Youth won 5-1 at home to West Didsbury & Chorlton. The goals came from Edson Cata, Harrison Jarvis-McCarthy, Nuyah Richards-Gray and George Raftery with the fifth, presumably, an own goal.

The Alty line-up in a/z order comprised Joel Bailey, Alfa Balde, Edson Cata, Oliwier Fiedor, Thomas Higgins, Alfred Igbinake, Harrison Jarvis-McCarthy, Abdulelah Nassief, Ajani Oshodin, Niyah Richards-Gray, George Raftery. Subs: Peter Arogun, Modoulamin Ceesay, Oliver Dixon, Will Spencer and Ian Vasconcelos José.

DEFEAT FOR RESERVES

On Saturday Altrincham Reserves went down to a 2-1 defeat in an away game at Middlewich Town in the Cheshire League.

Alty now sit eighth after four wins, three draws and three defeats in their ten matches to date.

In the previous week's Reserves match, first-team squad member Alex Sami (right) scored twice in the 5-2 win over AFC Knowsley.

NEXT GAME: WEALDSTONE

Wealdstone report that they " battled their way to a point in front of the BT Sport cameras against a strong Woking side.

Max Kretzschmar gave the Stones an early lead from the spot after Tarryn Allarakhia had been fouled, but Jermaine Anderson levelled things up four minutes later with a cracker from long range and that's the way it stayed.

The draw means the Stones are unbeaten at home this season and are in sixth spot with four wins, two draws a defeat from their first even games.

The game began in hectic fashion, almost resembling a basketball game at times, with both sides getting into the final third on multiple occasions...

It was the home who took the lead after ten minutes when slick play between Allarakhia and Kretzschmar down the left-hand side of the box saw the former fouled in the box by Luke Wilkinson. Kretzschmar wrestled the ball off usual penalty-taker Rhys Browne and just about squeezed the ball past the diving Craig Ross. It was the perfect time to score his first goal for his new side.

That lead lasted just four minutes. Anderson picked the ball up and smashed home a thunderous strike from 25 yards out...

The game was mostly played around a midfield battle , with little in the way of clear-cut chances in the second half... The game petered out into a stalemate, with not many chances coming in the last ten minutes... but it says plenty about the progress under the manager that the whole place felt a bit disappointed at only winning a point.

Wealdstone; Howes; Sesay, Cook, Elerewe, Habergham; Hutchinson, Charles (Dyer 74), Ferguson, Allarakhia; Kretzschmar (Napa 90); Browne (Olomola 84). Subs not used: Mongoy, Mundle-Smith".

Sunday 4 September:

  • Wealdstone 1-1 Woking

LAST GAME: SOLIHULL MOORS 5-1 ALTRINCHAM

Solihull Moors reports that "Moors bounced back from the Bank Holiday Monday defeat against County, with a dominant display against Altrincham at home... They dominated the possession throughout the game...

There were a few surprises for Moors fans as the skipper Howe was on the bench as well as Dallas. Joe Sbarra did not feature in the squad.

Moors starting the game strong[ly]... Moors kept the ball in the opposition half and were moving the ball around to find spaces when Altrincham broke and found a very good counter attack position. Moors fans gasped as Dinanga fired a shot with his left boot but could not find the net...

However, Ardley’s men stamped their dominance in the 20th minute as Osborne was brought down in front of the box. Josh Kelly stepped up and simply placed the ball into the top left-hand corner of the net. The Moors were 1-0 up.

After going ahead, Moors started passing the ball in style... but it was the 35th minute when we witnessed a magic goal from the visitors. Aaron Bennet received the ball outside the box, nudged it a little with his left foot and then sent a curling rocket into the top corner. There was no way any goalkeeper could get anywhere near it. 1-1...

Everyone was expecting... a 1-1 tie at half time, but Callum Maycock had different plans. He fired a shot at goal, it nicked a defender and looped over the goalkeeper to make it 2-1 to Moors.

Moors once again started very quickly in the second half. .. In the 48th minute... Ryan Barnett wiggled his way through the Robins’ defence and laid the ball off to Reid who smashed it home. Moors were starting to run away with it. 3-1.

The second half seemed like a Maycock, Clarke and Reid show. The trio were absolutely dominating the right side of the pitch as Altrincham were struggling to get anywhere near them..

In the 73rd minute. Reid received the ball in the box with his back to the goal, turned to his right and slotted the ball perfectly with his left boot. 4-1

For the last 20 minutes, Altrincham were sitting deep trying to nullify the inevitable threat of Alex Reid... An absolutely filthy moment in the last minute of the game saw Reidy pull a Russo, as he decided to go for a backheel. It sure well worked as he clinched his hattrick in style. 5-1".

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

Kent Online informs us that "Maidstone will be in for extra training on Monday after their 4-1 defeat at Gateshead.

Manager Hakan Hayrettin has called the squad in to go through events in the north east, a step he also took after United lost 5-0 at Wrexham a fortnight ago.

'Gaffer’s got us in Monday and we’ve got to prep for next week,' said midfielder Sam Corne. 'Listen, that’s our job, we weren’t at the races, we need to be better. We can utilise that extra day, which is reasonable, we’ve got to do that.'

Back-to-back wins over Torquay and Aldershot saw Maidstone travel to Tyneside in good shape. But a Gateshead side searching for their first win punished mistakes and were much better than a Stones outfit who looked strangely out of sorts.

The hosts struck twice in either half, and should have had more, before Joe Ellul’s 87th-minute header for the visitors.

'It’s one step forward, two steps back at the moment,' said Hayrettin... 'We can’t get any consistency in our game... We let ourselves down in the first half and that’s where the damage was done... Combinations and partnerships are not working, we’ll have to keep working hard to turn it around because we can see that we can win games and we know how to win.

'But when it goes wrong it sometimes goes badly wrong and today was one of those days where it went badly wrong'...

Maidstone had a lengthy discussion in the dressing room after their second long-distance away game this season went the same way as the first....

Said the Stones boss... 'We dealt with what happened at Wrexham and won two games back-to-back but... you’re going to have days like this'".

North Wales's Leader Live reports that "Ryan Reynods and Rob McElhenney have praised Dorking Wanderers for their classy approach to the game versus Wrexham AFC... Dorking manager and club co-founder, Marc White, praised the work of the Reds' Hollywood owners in his pre-match interview.

'I don't know why anyone would begrudge meaningful owners that want to take the club forward,' he said. 'They want to take the town forward and I really hope they do it. What these boys (Rob and Ryan) have done in coming in as real credit and they've been embraced by the whole place and it's good to see'.

Forming in 1999 by Marc White and his group of friends, Dorking started playing football in a local park. Since then, they have enjoyed a meteoric rise - gaining 12 promotions in 23 years.

On Saturday, Wrexham ran out comfortable 5-0 winners at the Meadowbank Stadium.

This was the fourth victory in a row where Wrexham scored 16 goals".

In the Nottingham Post, "Notts County boss Luke Williams has revealed that if Aaron Nemane had not gone down with an injury that he would have taken off hat-trick hero Macaulay Langstaff with the Notts County number nine on his third brace of the season.

The Magpies ran riot at the Chigwell Construction Stadium, with goals from Cedwyn Scott, Adam Chicksen and Langstaff's treble making it seven games unbeaten in the National League this season, moving them up to third in the standings.

And the summer signing from Gateshead was on fire once again, scoring two goals in the first half before completing his maiden hat-trick in Notts colours and professional football...

Speaking after the game, Williams revealed that Langstaff... "is actually fortunate today because if Aaron doesn't come off as he felt a tightening in his hamstring, then I would have probably put Kairo on up front on his own, and maybe then he does not get the hat-trick'...

One surprise admission [omission] from the starting line-up this afternoon was Geraldo Bajrami following his midfield performance against Solihull Moors, a performance that Williams labelled the midfielder a 'beast' following it.

His replacement in midfield was Jim O'Brien and he was outstanding in that holding midfield role... 'Jim's amazing, honestly he is amazing,' Williams said".

PARKY CONSIDERS CHANGE OF PLAN

In a post-match Alty YouTube interview by press and media officer Brian Flynn, after a chastening 5-1 defeat at Solihull, Altrincham boss Phil Parkinson asks himself "Do we stick with young lads or go for older heads, which was not the model we set out to do?"

However, he recognizes that, although the club has moved to a full-time model, as regards what it can pay for players, "We are bottom of the food chain".

In Saturday's game, only three players emerged with credit according to the Alty boss, they were Josh Lundstram [right], who the Alty boss selected as his man of the match, and two 20 year-old loanees, Eddy Jones and Chris Conn-Clarke.

SOLIHULL MOORS 5-1 ALTRINCHAM

Altrincham fell to a heavy defeat as they were left still seeking a first win after seven National League fixtures. They now lie second bottom, above only Scunthorpe United, and the Robins are now the only team without a win this season in the National League.

Having made five changes, Altrincham fell behind after twenty minutes when an unnecessary Aaron Bennett foul on Jamey Osborne gave the Moors a free-kick from 22 yards. Former Maidenhead man Kelly scored directly from the freekick to give the Moors the lead.

Not long afterwards it could have got worse but Reid hit the post from eight yards (26 mins). Five minutes later Whelan's free header should also have found the back of the Altrincham net but he headed wide (31 mins).

But a wonderful shot off the underside of the bar by Aaron Bennett (above, right), after good work by Ryan Colclough, gave Altrincham an equaliser (36 mins). Then, as Alty enjoyed a good spell, a Josh Lundstram shot forced a fine save and gained a corner (39 mins).

However, against the immediate run of play, Maycock chipped Mee from fifteen yards to make it 2-1 (42 mins). That remained the interval score.

Then for the third successive game, Altrincham conceded just after the re-start, with Reid side-footing home after Eddy Jones had lost possession (48 mins). So, 3-1 it was.

Midway through the second half Altrincham gave new forward Zak Goodson a debut in place of Dinanga whilst Brad Jackson replaced Aaron Bennett on the right wing (66 mins).

Moments after a stoppage for changes by both sides, Altrincham again lacked concentration and Reid scored his second goal to make it 4-1 (73 mins). In added time, Reid completed his hat-trick as he back-heeled home after a corner to leave the outcome 5-1 (90+3 mins).

Match report here.

FOURTH ACADEMY PLAYER GOES ON LOAN

Altrincham FC reports that Amaar Hussain (right) has become the fourth of the six Academy graduates signed on first team forms this summer to have gone on loan to get regular football.

Amaar has joined Hyde United and, as noted below, he was a used susbtitute for the Tameside team on Saturday.

The other three gaining experience away from the JDS are Ryan Forde, at Alsager Town, and both Jayden Matthew and Ryan Morton, who are at Trafford.

ALTY OLD BOYS

Phil Jordan's survey of former Altrincham players in action on Saturday tells us that Jeff King scored Chesterfield's second goal after only 8 minutes as they won 2-0 at Oldham. Later, he was booked.

Reagan Ogle did not feature in Scunthorpe United's squad as they hit the bottom of the league after losing 0-2 at home to Boreham Wood.

A Josh Hancock penalty, sandwiched between two Tom Peers strikes, gave Curzon Ashton a 3-0 win at Gloucester City.

Ashley Hemmings scored the final goal in Kidderminster's 4-1 home win over Spennymoor.

Joe Bunney and James Berry-McNally were part of the Macclesfield FC team that won 1-0 at West Didsbury & Chorlton for whom Callum Jones, Ben Elliott and Dontai Gabidon all started.

Nantwich Town, for whom Ritchie Sutton and Joe Mwasile started, with A-Jay Leitch-Smith (above, left) and Jon Moran on the bench, were embarrassingly knocked out of the FA Cup at home, 0-2, by Congleton Town for who David Parton kept a clean sheet.

Guiseley were surprisingly 0-1 behind at HT to Avro but won 2-1 with the clincher being "a stunning freekick" from John Johnston.

Amaar Hussain was a 73rd substitute for Hyde as they saw off Warrington Rylands 4-0 away from home. The second goal was a Jack Redshaw penalty. Callum Dolan was booked for Rylands.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

The Halifax Courier reports that "Town boss Chris Millington said he will take the positives out of their 1-1 draw at Maidenhead.

The Shaymen came from behind in the game, with Jordan Slew cancelling out Cole Kpekawa's opener just before half-time.

'I think Maidenhead played well, they did what they do,' Millington said. 'They're direct, they put balls in the box, they ask questions of your goalkeeper and your defenders. But I think all in all we're content that a point's the right outcome.

'We'll definitely take the positives.. We'll take it today that that's a bit of a turn in fortune. The first-half wasn't dissimilar to recent games in that we felt quite comfortable up until about 35 to 40 minutes, as an away performance we were quite content,' he said.

'We were dealing with the gradient of the pitch, dealing with the style of play in the way we intended... The momentum swung in Maidenhead's favour... and that ultimately resulted in us going behind....

'Very soft goal, conceding off a set-piece,' he said... 'We've dealt with corners quite well this season and that was one where we fell short of our usual standards'...

Town equalised in the second-half with their only shot on target, but were indebted to keeper Sam Johnson for some crucial saves...

Slew's goal was Halifax's only shot on target all game, something which Millington was disappointed with... Hometown defender Jack Senior was named as captain for the game... Millington said, 'His standards are very high, he's very, very passionate about the club, about his own performances and the team's and he's a player who the rest if the squad respect'...

Town kept hold of defender Jesse Debrah with the transfer window closing this week, but... Millington said there was no late interest for Halifax to fend off... 'I think the interest died away a few weeks ago,' said the Town boss.

Millington said Kian Spence, Jordan Keane and Tom Clarke all got injured in training towards the end of the week."

In the Derbyshire Times "Spireites coach Danny Webb said it is ‘great’ to still have Kabongo Tshimanga in their ranks.

The striker’s proposed move to Birmingham City fell through at the 11th hour before Thursday’s transfer deadline. He was not included in the matchday squad in the 2-0 win at Oldham Athletic on Saturday, with the forward given the weekend off...

'It is great that we have got someone like Kabs still in the building because we know what he can do... He works his socks off and deserves the attention he gets...

'But you saw today Joe Quigley has worked his socks off and got his goal, we are blessed at this football that we have got some really good people... They are all really good blokes'...

Victory at Boundary Park means Chesterfield stay top of the league and remain unbeaten.

The goals came in the first-half from Joe Quigley and Jeff King.... Webb said, 'I think a lot of the Oldham fans had left by the end because we were so comfortable'...

With Akwasi Asante and Armando Dobra out injured, Jack Clarke made his first start in a year and Calvin Miller was handed his first start of the season... George Cooper was another absentee, Webb explaining that he had been ill during the week.

Quigley’s opener was... scored after just 34 seconds after pouncing on an error by the home goalkeeper.

Webb said...'Nobody deserves that goal more than him. It is his reward. The gaffer has stuck with him because he brings so much to the team'".

The only club below Altrincham currently is Scunthorpe United who visit Moss Lan on 13 September.

"United were beaten at home 2-0 by Boreham Wood in Saturday afternoon’s game.

The Iron came into the game having made three changes from Monday’s game against FC Halifax Town. Liam Feeney and Marcus Carver returned to the side and also Rob Apter made his first start after joining on loan from Blackpool...

Wood continued to get opportunities early on and they almost took the lead within the first ten minutes... Marsh was the player who was presented with the most chances in the first half of the game...

Wood found themselves with the biggest opportunity of the game so far in the 54th minute... Minutes later, Boreham Wood found the first goal of the game. A powerful header by Marsh was dealt with by a spectacular save from the Iron keeper, Dewhurst. However, the ball fell right into the path of Ndlovu who latched onto the loose ball and slotted the ball into the bottom corner from six-yards-out. This put the visitors in the driving seat.

The momentum was with Boreham Wood and they used this to go and grab a second goal. Marsh drove down the right-hand flank and he made his way into the penalty area. The ball was bundled into Dewhurst’s net. This gave the away side some breathing room...

Wood nearly got a third goal later on when substitute Daniel Elliott took on a shot from the edge of the area. Dewhurst dealt with the first shot well but he parried the ball into the path of an onrushing Boreham Wood player. Dewhurst reacted superbly and he flung himself at the feet of the striker and somehow managed to turn the ball behind for a corner...

IRON: Dewhurst, Boyce, Feeney (Wilson, 82), Nuttall, Carver (Beestin, 69), Rowe, Taft, Butterfield, Daniel, Apter, Fletcher (Whitehouse, 62). IRON SUBS NOT USED: Foster, Gallimore.

FIVE MORE CHANGES

After Phil Parkinson had made six changes to his starting eleven last Monday he made another five alterations to his line-up for today's game at Solihull.

Out went Jordan Hulme and Lewis Baines, who were both unable to complete the match on Monday, whilst Jake Cooper, Brad Jackson (left) and Ben Pringle moved to the bench, where new signings Zak Goodson and Dan Malone joined that trio.

Into the starting eleven came three loanees (Chris Conn-Clarke, Aaron Bennett and Eddy Jones), along with striker Marcus Dinanga and centre-back James Jones.

Loanee goalkeeper Dermot Mee was again preferred to Ollie Byrne, whilst neither Egli Kaja nor Alex Sami was involved.

So far this season, 25 players have been named in an Altrincham matchday squad in the seven fixtures to date.

ALTRINCHAM 29. Dermot Mee, 5. Toby Mullarkey (c), 26. James Jones, 22. Ross Barrows, Eddy Jones, 10. Elliot Osborne, 8. Josh Lundstram, 27. Aaron Bennett, 16. Chris Conn-Clarke, 11. Ryan Colclough, 30. Marcus Dinanga. Subs: 17. Brad Jackson, 18. Ben Pringle, 23. Jake Cooper, Zak Goodson, Dan Malone

SOLIHULL MOORS 18. Louie Moulden, 2. James Clarke, 3. Ben Coker, 10. Jamey Osborne, 8. Callum Maycock, 11. Ryan Barnett, 12. Reiss McNally, 14. Josh Kelly, 15. Fiacre Kelleher, 19. Alex Reid, 20. Callum Whelan Subs: 4. Kyle Storer, 5. Callum Howe 9. Andrew Dallas, 16. Ethan Vaughan, 27. Connor Parsons

BEFORE SOLIHULL MOORS v ALTRINCHAM

Altrincham face Solihull Moors today, seeking their first win this season in their seventh fixture.

After fielding seventeen different players in the two starting elevens over the Bank Holiday weekend, the line-up for today's game remains guesswork. And predicting the starters is made even more complex both by the signing of three players this week and by injuries to at least two players in last Monday's match.

Altrincham captain Jordan Hulme had to be replaced during the second half after suffering a hand injury. He is pictured, right, leaving the field in that game against Chesterfield. And Lewis Baines was also unable to complete the game, instead sitting on the byline beside the Chesterfield goal in the closing stages of the match. Whether either or both is fit today is unclear.

Manager Phil Parkinson also has to decide whether to include in his squad his new forward signing, Zak Goodson, and his two new loanees from Stoke City, left-back Eddy Jones and midfielder Dan Malone.

Parkinson has also signalled a policy of rotation of his goalkeepers, with Manchester United loanee Dermot Mee starting on Monday after summer signing Oliver Byrne had kept goal 48 hours earlier.

TWO MORE JOIN ALTY

On the eve of their seventh league fixture of the season at Solihull, Altrincham FC has signed another two loanees, to bring the total in that category to four. The earlier loanees to arrive at the J. Davidson Stadium are Chris Conn-Clarke (from Fleetwood Town), Aaron Bennett (from Preston NE).

Both new recruits are from Stoke City and one is a familiar face.

The familiar face belongs to 20 year-old left-back Eddy Jones (left) who previously signed for Altrincham on a season-long loan from Stoke City on 3 February 2022 before completing 12 (+1) games for The Robins last season.

He had joined the Potteries club from Bury and he went on to make 12 appearances in a loan spell at AFC Telford United before playing three games in EFL 2 for Hartlepool United at the start of 2021-22 season. His loan spell in the North East saw him make six appearances in all for Hartlepool.

He returned to Stoke in January 2022 before his move to Altrincham, where he made an assured debut at left-back on 5 February. Eddy has representative honours at under-17 and under-21 for Wales.

Jones joins Josh Lundstram, Jordan Hulme, Chris Conn-Clarke, Jake Cooper and James Jones as one of six players currently spending a second (or third) spell in their careers at Altrincham

His Stoke team-mate who also arrives at Moss Lane is defensive midfielder Dan Malone, who also has Welsh representative credentials, for the under-17 age group, and has captained the side. Now aged 20, (dob 9 May 2002) he has spent the last two years on contract at the Britannia Stadium but has been at the club since the age of nine.

He is predictably nicknamed "Bugsy"!

Excluding the six Academy graduates added to the squad, but including the four loanees, the Altrincham first-team contingent now comprises 26 players.

Altrincham FC press and media officer John Edwards adds that "the new loanees will add a degree of solidity and know-how to Alty's squad as Phil Parkinson considers his options for Saturday's testing trip to Solihull Moors...

When both players earned new contracts at Stoke in June last year, then-Potters boss Michael O'Neill assessed their potential by saying 'Eddy is a left-back, left wing-back and I think possibly he could play as a left-sided midfield player as well. Technically, he’s very good. He has a good physique and good stature as well...

'Young Dan Malone is a midfield player who can handle the ball [not literally hopefully!]... He’s one of a few like Tom Sparrow and [ex-Alty loanee] Adam Porter who have been gaining good experience at under-23 level and ones we hope to push through and challenge for a first team position'".

The loans will continue "until the New Year".

13 DEBUTANTS; COULD RISE TO 17

Thirteen players who were not Altrincham FC employees at the end of last season have now made a National League appearance this season. They are Baines, Barrows, Bennett, Brockbank, Byrne, Conn-Clarke, Cooper, Hulme, Jones, Kaja, Lundstram, Mee and Sami.

That leaves Aidan Roxburgh and the three very recent signings as the four new players yet to be named in a matchday squad. The new arrivals are Zak Goodson, signed from Ilkeston Town, and the two Stoke City loanees Dan Malone and Eddy Jones, as the only members of the squad, apart from Roxburgh, six Academy graduates, and the long-term injured Matty Kosylo and Isaac Marriott, not to have been in a matchday squad yet this season.

ALTY AWAY IN CSC

Altrincham FC announces that "Altrincham have been drawn away to Sandbach United in the First Round of this season's Cheshire Senior Cup competition.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

From Gloverscast we learn that "Alfie Pond‘s loan at Yeovil Town has been cut short after he joined Premier League Wolves from his parent club Exeter City.

The 18 year-old centre half made an impressive debut in the 1-0 home win over Dagenham & Redbridge and featured in the stalemate at Wealdstone on Bank Holiday Monday.

His departure was speculated about... ahead of the closing of the Football League [transfer window] and was confirmed by Exeter on Friday morning saying the deal had been done for an 'undisclosed fee'".

Pond was on the bench when Yeovil recently visited the J. Davidson Stadium.

But another National League club has been able to keep one of its players who also visited Moss LAne recently as the Derbyshire Times tells us that "Kabongo Tshimanga remains a Chesterfield player after his proposed move to Birmingham City fell through at the 11th hour.

The striker was set to sign for the Championship club but the deal did not get over the line before the 11pm transfer deadline on Thursday...

It emerged about 30 minutes before the deadline that it was no longer going to happen.

Unconfirmed reports in the local Birmingham media claimed it was because he failed his medical... The deadline for Premier League and EFL clubs to sign new players has now passed and they cannot add to their squads until January...

The sensational twist means that the forward will remain a Chesterfield player for at least a few more months, unless another National League club makes a move for him, which is unlikely. Earlier in the evening, the Blues bolstered their midfield options with the signing of young Arsenal man Tim Akinola on a season-long loan...

He is yet to start a game this season as he works his way back to full fitness following a fractured leg and dislocated ankle that he suffered in February, but he has scored two goals off the bench in his last two appearances, including the winner against Altrincham on Monday".

At Southend United "Kevin Maher says Blues’ signing of Kacper Łopata will only add to the competition for places in the squad.

Łopata joins on a two-year deal with an option for a further year... Maher said 'He’s obviously someone we know well and have monitored. We thought we needed another body in the defensive area'...

The Polish U21 international appeared in 18 games for Blues last season. On his return, Maher added... 'The players we’ve added will complement the ones that were already here and it’s about building a better team and a better squad with a plan of how we’re going to work going forward. Kacper just adds to that'...

It’s been quite a settled defensive line in the last four games, which is one of the main reasons why Blues currently have the joint-best defensive record in the Vanarama National League...

'Hobbo [Shaun Hobson], Kens [Ollie Kensdale] and Louis Lomas have all done brilliantly so Kacper’s got to fight for the shirt like anyone else. Hopefully that competition raises the standards further... The three lads that have played have been brilliant, so they’ve earned to right to keep going'".

OLdham Athletic "announce the signing of Charlie Wellens on loan from Manchester United.

Charlie, the son of former Latics midfielder and manager Richie Wellens, joins on a deal until 8 January 2023...

'Charlie’s a young player with lots of potential and has received a great schooling at Manchester United in their U18s and U23s,' [manager] Sheridan said...

'He’s got pace, he’s versatile'... The 19-year-old has spent the past few years in the Manchester United youth set-up, mainly playing as a right-back... He was converted to a right back as he made his first appearances in Premier League 2 for the U23s... He was part of the United squad that travelled to Austria for a pre-season training camp".

NEXT GAME: SOLIHULL MOORS

On Saturday, Altrincham travel to the Midlands for their next National League fixture, at Solihull Moors. In what will be their seventh fixture of the season, Altrincham are seeking their first win of the campaign after four draws and two defeats have left them in 19th place.

The Moors lie fifth after three wins, two draws and a defeat, as they seek to go one better than last season's promotion play-offs.

Alty's footballing links to Solihull go back to before the formation of the current Solihull Moors club. Indeed, it is now twenty-two years since Altrincham winger Andy Lovelock joined Solihull Borough (founded 1953), who were to merge with Birmingham club Moor Green (founded 1901) in 2007 in the wake of a January 2006 arson attack on their ground which happened a short time after Altrincham had played their only ever match against the original Moors club in December 2005.

Since its foundation, the merged Solihull Moors club has been based at what was Borough's ground, at Damson Park, from where it gained promotion to the National League in 2016.

Andy Lovelock (d.o.b. 20 December 1976) scored the goal that secured the 1999 Unibond NPL title for Altrincham, having joined from Crewe Alexandra on loan during the latter part of that season. In the Conference in 1999-2000, he mainly started as a substitute. He did start a number of games at the end of the 1999/2000 season but only started 12 games and scored only one other goal in his career at Alty before leaving for Solihull Borough in the 2000 close season.

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

The Derbyshire Times reports that "Chesterfield striker Kabongo Tshimanga has reported for training amid rumoured interest in him on transfer deadline day...

Reports elsewhere have linked Championship sides Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic with a move for Tshimanga, who scored 25 goals in 30 appearances last season... He suffered a fractured leg and dislocated ankle in February but he is back fit now and he has scored two goals in his last two games, both coming off the bench, as he awaits his first start of the campaign".

One of those goals was foir Chesterfield against Altrincham on Monday.

Barnet confirm that "Idris Kanu is a Barnet player after completing a move from Peterborough United Football Club for an undisclosed fee.

Kanu arrives to further bolster Dean Brennan’s attack for the 22/23 season. The versatile 22 year-old... has previously played for Aldershot Town, Port Vale, Boreham Wood and Northampton Town and has proven himself as a threat across the pitch. He can play either out-wide or centrally and joins Barnet as our new No. 11...

Kanu said... 'I have come here to get goals, assists and to contribute to a winning team'...

Barnet FC Head Coach, Dean Brennan, said...'He is a player that will bring plenty to our team and I am excited to see his performances... His previous experience will be really welcome'".

Stratford Town tells us that "Will Dawes has made his dream move this week into full time football at Yeovil Town...

Chairman, Jed McCrory commented 'We have had three interested parties in Dawsey and he chose to go to Yeovil, as it is close to his family home. We are saddened to see him go but delighted that we have moved a player on to a higher level again.

Dawsey has been a delight for the few years he has been here and improved beyond belief...

He continued... 'I believe he will be a Division One player quickly due to his desire and ability'"

The player, who is 22 years-old next week, added "I’ll be moving on to Yeovil... I haven’t had too many birthday presents that will match this...

"I’ve been through my fair share of clubs (mainly Somerset and Gloucestershire) but last season was my first full season in men's football... It’s the start of my third season here actually and... I’m going to miss the people at the club here the most".

ALTY v CHESTERFIELD HIGHLIGHTS

Alty TV has highlights from Monday's clash between Altrincham and Chesterfield.

NEXT GAME: SOLIHULL MOORS

On Saturday, Altrincham travel to Solihull Moors. Alty were beaten twice by the Moors last season, losing 5-0 away and 1-2 at home.

That last visit to Damson Park was on 29 January 2022 which turned into a dreadful afternoon after Altrincham actually had started quite well.

Altrincham had goneinto the game with just two wins from their previous twenty-one matches in all competitions. In contrast Solihull had won their last three matches, scoring ten times and not conceding at all. Striker Andy Dallas had hit nine goals in those matches!

However, it was against the run of play Solihull when took an eighteenth-minute lead through Andy Dallas's tenth goal in four games...

Right: Kevin Berkoe

Shortly afterwards it got even worse for the Robins when Berkoe's off-the-ground challenge on Maycock prompted a red card (22 mins). As Alty tried to make up for Berkoe's dismissal, Solihull's Osborne took advantage and scored a second goal for the Moors (26 mins).

And it became 3-0 when more good work by Jamie Osborne led to another goal for Dallas, so it was 3-0 (35 mins). A well-worked fourth goal arrived through Maycock after 42 minutes.

In a low key second half, it was not until 82 minutes before Barnett made it 5-0 to the hosts. Kosylo rounded off a wretched afternoon when he allegedly kicked out at an opponent in added time and received a second red card for Altrincham.

Despite gleaning just seven points from the last 51 and securing only one win in 17 league matches, Alty remained ten points clear of the relegation spots.

ALTRINCHAM: 1 Tony Thompson (c), 19. Jamie Morgan, 25. Toby Mullarkey, 18. Kennedy Digie, 24. Kevin Berkoe, (c), 8. Elliot Osborne, 32. Isaac Marriott, 17. Ben Pringle, 10. Josh Hancock, 11. Ryan Colclough, 23. Tom Peers. Subs: 2. Shaun Densmore, 27. A-Jay Leitch-Smith, 15. Matty Kosylo, 6. Jake Moult, 7. Dan Mooney .

RESERVES UPDATE

As reported here previously Altrincham FC Reserves won at home, 5-2 against AFC Knowsley a week ago, after a draw at Whaley Bridge Athletic and a home win against Poynton 4-1 in their previous match

Now Altrincham FC "Reserves boss Ross Speight provides an update...

"The main challenge for the squad in pre-season was dealing with so many changes, with no fewer than 14 players moving on and more Academy and youth players stepping up to Reserves level.... The young Robins started the season in fine form, going unbeaten in their first four games, with two wins and two draws...

A disappointing performance brought our first defeat of the season, away to Garswood United, but the lads learnt their lessons quickly from that setback and followed up with a dominant display against Poynton that yielded a 4-1 victory.

The following week, we had two difficult games against experienced sides in Whaley Bridge and Lostock Gralam, and while we acquitted ourselves well to draw 2-2 at Whaley Bridge, we were on the wrong end of a 5-2 scoreline at Lostock..

[They] finished the month off with their best performance so far to chalk up a 5-2 win over a very good Knowsley side.

One of the highlights of the month has been seeing several young players invited to train with the first team, along with Sharif Islam showing glimpses of his potential with six goals in nine games and Dion Bohe also starting the season in great form.

Academy players Owen German, who captained the side at 17 years old against Knowsley, Liam Evans and Loui Williams have stood out this month... First team squad members Ross Barrows, Alex Sami (pictured, above left), Harlan Rodgers-Morris, Joe Cooney and Amaar Hussain have all joined the Reserves at different times to acquire game time and have been a credit to the senior players with their attitude around the younger lads".

ALTY OLD BOYS

The Echo News reports that "Southend United star Dan Mooney says he gets just as much joy making goals as scoring them.

Right: Mooney in his Altrincham days.

Mooney has claimed three assists in Blues’ last two matches...

'As long as the team is scoring and I’m contributing with assists then I’m as happy as if I’m scoring,' said Mooney. 'I probably should have had one on Monday. I tried to chip the keeper and it’s just come off the outside of my foot rather than the inside and it’s come off the post. But contributing with assists and goals is what I’ve been brought in to do'...

Mooney made both Blues’ goals in Monday’s 2-0 win against Maidenhead United at Roots Hall...

'I thought we dominated from minute one really,' said Mooney...

Blues broke the deadlock when Gus Scott-Morriss headed home a right wing corner from Mooney..

'Daz [Darren Currie] works with us a lot on set pieces and there’s a lot on me to put the ball in the right place in the box because we do have people who are willing to get their head on it,' said Mooney... 'The lads are doing brilliantly with the clean sheets and that’s helping us a lot. We feel like if we get a goal we will win the game.'”

VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NEWS

The Grimsby Telegraph reports that "Scunthorpe United signed midfielder Isaac Fletcher on loan from Championship club Middlesbrough last week in what turned out to be one of Keith Hill’s last signings before being dismissed by the club at the weekend.

The Iron are on a dismal run of five straight defeats to start their 2022/23 National League campaign... with this poor run following right after their relegation from the Football League last season...

Fletcher made his full debut for the club against Halifax, playing the full 90 minutes, and is likely to be a key figure for Scunthorpe in the coming months as they look to overturn a poor start which has them sat [sic] second-from-bottom in the National League table after six games...

Fletcher said 'I’ve spoke[n] to them, [ex-Alty man Reagan Ogle and Marcus Carver] a bit. I know they’ve both settled in and are enjoying it. It always helps when you know people here, and they’re saying positive things about the club.

'My best position is probably as a number eight. I like to get up and down the pitch, trying to add goals to my game. Physically I’m tall and need to compete and do that side of the game...

'It’s a great opportunity'" he concluded.

The National League has issued a statement saying, "Many will be aware of the recent comments [from the Wrexham owners] regarding streaming, and it is important we set out the current position of the Vanarama National League.

Firstly, it is important to remember that we already have a Broadcast Partner, in BT Sports, who currently have the contractual rights to all National League games in a deal that has served the whole league and all its 72 clubs well...

We have been working intensely for some months to finalise a proposal to launch a centralised, fully tested, Vanarama National League streaming platform. This proposal goes to the Board for consideration at their meeting on 15th September.

The proposal will recognise that we must respect and protect the status of the league and also BT Sport’s high production values and ensuring an approach which guarantees quality of service and the needs of all our clubs and their fans.

We understand the desire from some clubs, who find themselves in a position to stream independently and we respect that, however there is a requirement for the League to protect and provide a solution for all three divisions...

The commercial arm of the League have been simultaneously seeking partners for the delivery and commercialisation of a streaming platform. The League has the support of Vanarama and BT Sport in ensuring we deliver the needs of all our Clubs.

There are challenges in supplying a product that can be used by everyone, whilst ensuring compliance with Article 48 [which is not explained in the statement].

The Board will consider the proposal in full, and that will include the timetable for its introduction".
